To the delight of civil libertarians and libertarians alike, the Canadian courts have been leading the world in dealing with conflicts between privacy principles and morality legislation. I am serving as an expert in the review of Canadian polygamy laws in British Columbia. In the meantime, the Ontario Superior Court may allow three prostitution laws to die this Saturday.
In September, the Court struck down the laws. The federal government is charging that this is nothing short of a “social experiment unprecedented in this country.” However, it is also a frank acknowledgment that consenting adults came engage in sex for money as a consensual choice. Currently, an individual can have sex with any number of partners but can be arrested if they accept anything of value in exchange for sex. They can receive gifts as part of a “relationship” no matter how fleeting but not as payment.
The Court previously noted that criminal laws force prostitutes in the shadows where they are easy prey for abuse and even homicides. Once legal, protections and regulations can apply to the world’s oldest profession. With the demise of the laws, street walking will be legal.

This is a grim topic we are attempting to discuss on this thread and going off topic every once in a while acts as a relief valve, I think.
The little boy set the stage with his second list for his friend whose “daddy is un..em..poyed” (his pronounceable word) and the adults followed suit. It was one of those serendipitous moments life presents … grab it or it’s gone forever. I was happy to share it with you all.

I just watched Marijuana Inc. In Mendicino County they say pot = 60% of the economy!
They said that when they started to allow small grows they just never imagined how it would take off.
Well just think of that in the context of prostitution. Most of the conversation above the posters did not seem to think it possible that their family member would be a prostitute.
But if it were legal, it might be that 40% of women, plus some boys and girls would work as prostitutes at least intermittently. That would totally change the dynamics of family life.
I like the “Fine the Johns” laws in Northern Europe. They are successful programs that reduce the amount of prostitution.
I’m going to send the State of Nevada an open records request for prostitution relates taxes and statistical licensing records.

I don’t put a lot of faith in anything from Wiki….you do know that ppl can add whatever they want on there right? As for stats, frankly I work on the front line and rely on what I see. I’ve taken stats courses and am very familiar with how unreliable they can actually be. I don’t work in research….EVER… it’s dull and not for me. The opinions I’ve expressed are beased on what I’ve witnesssed in my daily work. I think until one has had the experience of working with people who have lived the reality of prostitution it’s difficult to form an educated opinion on the matter.
FYI… PDD, PDD-NOS, & Autistic Spectrum Disorders are neurological/sensory disorders . I have heard that a new category in the next edition of the DSM will be created to better refelect the challenges faced by people who are dx’d with Sensory Disorders.

One thing about the “Fine the Johns” laws in Sweden and Norway is that it sounds like the fines on the purchase or attempted purchased of sex are enough to deter it but not so extreme that people won’t report it.
It doesn’t sound impossible to get the Fine the Johns laws into North America with proper education.
In your professional research, do you see statistics for prostitution in Nevada? The statistics must be available because of the licenses, tax revenues, and taxi receipts.
Wikipedia quoted the San Francisco Chronicle and ABC News as saying there are only 300 licensed prostitutes in Nevada but when I clicked, it seemed like that number was way way low. Maybe it is an old number.

I work in mental health & addictions and have had significant involvement with women who have felt forced to prostitute themselves in the past and some who still do. Their reasons range from being homeless to being drug addicted to needing to buy the basics of life ( ie food ). The women who I have worked with come from horrific backgrounds and have expereinced any or every type of abuse imanginable….and some that most people could never imagine. Most of these women were prostitues prior to the age of 18….so in reality they were victims of molestation ( I did post a story earlier ). I currently work in an urban setting, but the women that I’ve worked with come from both urban and rural settings

Sorry for the suggestion of the words “intellectual disability”. How much direct experience do you have with prostitutes? Was it in a rural or an urban setting?
If you would repeat why you are against prostitution, that would be great because we have covered a lot of ground in the last few days.

Thank-you for the Wikki lesson in ID. For the record, I hold a degree in Behavioural Psychology and have been employed in the Mental Health field for 18 yrs. Prior to that I held summer jobs working with people dx’d with Severe Intellectual Disabilities ( 1st percetile disabilities ) during my school years. The MR term has not been used in the field ( in Ontario anyhow ) for many years and I was shocked to see it used to describe a group of people. Up until the last 2 years the term used was Developmental Disability…which is still used by some however ” Intellectual Disability ” and the IQ percentile are the accepted terms at this time.
In Ontario, where the laws are to be struck down regarding prostitution, it is highly unlikely that a person classified in the 1st percentile would be found prostituting due to the protective services in place to care for these people. It is far more likely that a person dx’d with a mental or psychological disorder would be lured into the business. These people rarely have an intellectual disability and are typically very intelligent but unable to obtain or maintain gainful employment due to their symptoms.
While I do not agree that legalization of prostitution is a good idea ( I’ve previously stated my reasons why ), I certainly do not believe that people involved in prostitution are at an intellectual disadvantage. I think that your suggestion that they are is really quite insulting to the people involved in prostitution.
BTW….I don’t know the inside on what CUYOSA is.
