Muslims in Indonesia are outraged by a five-year sentence given a man accused of blasphemy. They wanted death, so they responded by burning three Christian churches. On Sunday (as shown in the graphic video below), three members of a minority Muslim sect were killed by a mob.
On Sunday, roughly 1,000 Muslims attacked members of a minority sect, Ahmadiyah, in Cikeusik village and killed three and injured six others. When the Obama Administration yielded to demands from Arab allies to support the concept of blasphemy prosecutions, many of us were horrified. This is the face of blasphemy prosecutions — little more than mob justice dressed up as legal process. Even when an absurdly long sentence is handed down, it is not enough for the mob.

This is your brain on religion.
“As long as people believe in absurdities, they will continue to commit atrocities.”

Dogs: “Bush went out of his way to not kill civilians.”
Not sure which war you were watching but IF he was trying to minimize civilian casualties that would be another thing he fucked up try to do.

Well Timmy McVey & friends were Christians as was the guy that shot up the LA synagogue a year or two ago and the guy that shot up the church in TN because it was “too liberal”, and the actions of the Jewish extremists in the Middle East, while hiding behind the government of Israel, are close enough. The sad fact is there are crackpot killers in every society and we make a terrible mistake when we ignore that to focus on some subdivision’s crackpot killers because it makes us feel better.
Gyges,
My bad. You are right. It is similar to religion in its “fact” based background!
Raff,
I was pointing out that Nationalism isn’t necessarily fact based in it’s views.
Gyges, if I understand your question, Nationalism and lies are teh basis for the idea that the U.S.has the best healthcare system. They forget to mention that it may be the best if you can afford it or if your insurance company will cover it.
Rafflaw,
So what is the idea that the U.S. has the best healthcare system in the world is based on?
Gyges, it is worse than Nationalism because it is based on “faith” not facts.
Mespo, that is a great line at the end. Is that yours?

Well not exactly. I haven’t seen a plethora of Episcopal suicide bombers, relatively few Mormon skyjackers, and no Jewish rabbis calling for the heads of Americans on pikes. The Western religions, while possessing much to be sorry about, have just had too many civilizing run-ins with modernity to equate it to the radicalized muslims at issue here.
While every cat is a felid, not all felidae are lions.
I’ve long held the theory that when you give somebody something higher than themselves it gives them reason to believe that there MUST be people lower than themselves.
That’s not to say that religion automatically leads to treating the other as subhuman, it’s to say that it provides a darn good rational. Sort of like Nationalism.
How many people have been killed over religion? To allow this kind of mayhem because someone doesn’t believe the same thing that you do is chilling. Fox News will probably be playing this story over and over again.
MetroCowboy,
Well said. Bush just killed over 100,000 civilians in Iraq alone over a lie and trumped up intelligence, not to mention the majority of the inmates at Gitmo who were deemed to be innocent by the government, but allowed to fester in that hell hole.

The uninitiated would probably see just any old gang of thugs coming down that dirt road, but to the true believer it is God’s own army marching for vengeance.
Quite a religion they have there. Is this the “Religion of Mercy & Compassion” I hear so much about?

Yes, quite a religion that “they” have “there.” It’s also the same as the religions that “we” have “here,” and other “theys” have in other “theres.” This Muslim mob acted just like an angry atheist Bolshevik mob, just like an outraged Christian mob, just like a deeply offended Hindu mob and just like an engraged Jewish mob. Take a look at the grinning faces in the photos that we Americans took to commemorate our countless lynchings. You’ll see the proud, beaming faces of pastors, reverends and deacons smiling back at you from behind the swinging corpse.

Not by us, but by our religions, our politicians, and our dogs of war — over whom we have increasingly little control. There is no way to indict a whole people, but Bush … now you’re on to something. Maybe we need the Swiss to show us some backbone.

Coming soon to your neighborhood … Bachmann’s “armed and dangerous” thugs … impossible, you say? ….

I tell ya, my wife was never nice. On our first date, I asked her if I could give her a goodnight kiss on the cheek – she bent over!
