The Sharia Shag Cut: Male Hairdressers Ordered To Stop Cutting Women’s Hair

The hardline Islamic government in Gaza has implemented another edict under Sharia law. This time male hairdressers were told that they would be arrested if they continued to cut women’s hair.

The story below includes accounts of how the Gaza police called each hairdresser into a room where they had an unrelated detainees hanging by shackles from the wall. They were told that, if they took more more snip of women’s hair, they would be violating Sharia and would be punished. The hanging detainee was a nice touch. A “shampoo and shackles” message that was not lost on the men, who are now struggling to survive.

  1. pete,

    You have outdone yourself.

    Buddha is Applauding

I have a buddy from high school that still wears a mullet.

I cannot wait until I see him next. The best part? He’s Jewish. The joke might even make his hair catch on fire. 🙂

Come now, surely some of you recall that it was only in the 1970’s that American courts in upstanding Christian America even began to realize that a Christian husband was indeed raping his Christian wife if he forced her against her will.

  5. There is NOTHING different about Islam or any religion as opposed to any other religion. It’s all nonsense and to debate or argue the fine points of one kind of nonsense versus another is to debate the shades of crazy between Sharon Angle and Sarah Palin.

  6. IS,

I think frank, gingerbaker and mespo have answered more than adequately.

I never said all Muslims, which would be wrong. I am sure many are as fed up as we are. Here is one man who is trying to change his religions culture. Good luck to him and others of his outlook.

But overall it doesnt look good. Sometimes you have to put political correctness aside.

Maybe Mr. Burke never interacted with Arabs/Muslims.

“really BIL? You think you can not find this sort of insanity in every religion?”

So what? Is that germane to the question of whether there is something different about Islam?

Saying, for instance, that all families have their own problems, does not shed any light on whether there is something different about, say, the Fred Phelps family of Westboro Baptist Church.

Whether Islam is a different case than other religions is indeed a legitimate question. Please show us, for example, a reactionary Jewish or Christian theocracy anywhere in the world right now outside of the Vatican? Islam has not exactly embraced Enlightenment values to the same extent as other religions, and it clearly has a *much* larger radicalized component than any other religion.

  13. really BIL? You think you can not find this sort of insanity in every religion?

This is not a feature of any one religion, we can quote crackpots from Judaism, Christianity and Hinduism that are as enlightening as your examples. It proves only that the speaker recognizes that crackpots profess a belief system similar to his own. In this case Islam, but there are oppressors of this sort in every religion.

This is a struggle of humanity against reactionary repression. It has been going on in fits and starts since we crawled out of the primordial ooze. On one side is all the power of wealth, using the instruments of control, state and religion (of whatever popular flavor) against the forces of reason and human dignity.

One wonders why you would take the word of Al-Buleihi, an unabashed (albeit liberal) Muslim himself, given your obvious prejudice but you apparently have resolved Burke’s dilemma. Let’s see how the jury here rules on your aggregate charge.

  15. Does Sharia law allow a husband to rape his wife, even in America? A New Jersey trial judge thought so. In a recently overturned case, a “trial judge found as a fact that defendant committed conduct that constituted a sexual assault” but did not hold the defendant liable because the defendant believed he was exercising his rights over the victim. Fortunately, a New Jersey appellate court reversed the trial judge. But make no mistake about it: this is no isolated incident. We will see more cases here in the United States where others attempt to impose Sharia law, under the guise of First Amendment protections, as a defense against crimes and other civil violations.

I dont know if you remember our arguement a year or so ago:

    http://jonathanturley.org/2009/06/18/pakistani-muslims-beat-reportedly-beat-christian-to-death-for-buying-tea-at-muslim-only-stand/

I would like to reiterate in light of all that has gone on, there is something wrong with Islam. There is a fundamental problem with this religion, it is not equivalent to Christianity or the Jewish faith or the Hindu faith.

They are, for the most part, barbarians engaged in a culture of death and totalitarianism. The evidence is overwhelming at this point. I hope you realize it now.

“This is a one-dimensional culture, a culture of tyranny – tyranny in culture, in politics, in society, in the family, and in everything.”

    Ibrahim Al-Buleihi

”Humans are originally individuals, but cultures (including Arab culture) have dissolved the individual in the tribe, sect or state, so that the individual was unable to know his own identity and recover it, except with the diffusion of philosophical ideas from Greece, where, in the fifth century BC, philosophy produced elevated human values for the first time in human history, and the human being became an individual of value for himself and the ultimate goal, and not merely a means for others.”

    Ibrahim Al-Buleihi

”I believe that the situation of the Arabs and Muslims is very bad. The reason is the closed culture and its inability to absorb modern civilization, to be aware of its shortcomings, and to be aware of the merits of other cultures.”

    Ibrahim Al-Buleihi

“… views are not frustrating … but the real frustration is that we praise ourselves while we are in an terrible situation, and the Arabs and Muslims have become a joke to the rest of the world. That is, we are a joke, and no one is concerned with us. But now we announce that we innovate in cutting off heads, in killing, in bombings — that is the extent to which we can innovate. This is a major problem, I mean, that we are a burden not only to ourselves but to the whole world. I believe that the whole world is regressing because of our actions. For example, the countries of the West — democratic countries like America, Europe, Britain and others — have changed their laws in ways that restrict liberties. Transportation has become slow because … people have to stand in long queues to fly on an airplane, due to searches, something that was previously unknown. We have become a burden to ourselves, and to the world.”

    Ibrahim Al-Buleihi

  17. I’ve heard that more than one US state has either adopted or propopsed laws banning the introduction of sharia laws in those states. To pass Constitutional muster, should’t those laws also ban using the Bible as a basis for laws. Fundie’s stance on gays and abortion and any and all resultant laws are purely and simply the imposition of the christian version of sharia law in America.
