Egyptian Party Leader: “I Am the Enemy of Democracy”

With Libya now moving to a Sharia-based system that will impose religious values on the population, Egypt is also rapidly moving toward an extreme Sharia based system. Indeed, Hesham al Ashry (the leader of the Salafists) announced this week that “I am the enemy of democracy.”

Businessman Naguib Sawiris now calls Egypt’s future “dim … bad.”

Al Ashry put the reality into perspective: “This is a big opportunity and it’s not going to go back. This was mentioned by the Prophet Mohammed. Peace be upon him. He said this was going to happen.” Thus, the freedom that led to the overthrow of Mubarak regime will now be extinguished to embrace a new form of oppression — just faith-based rather than tyrant-based repression.

One of the objections made to the intervention of the United States in Libya was that, in addition to the absence of any declaration from Congress, President Obama could bring bring about a more radical regime. Even at the time, Libyan rebels were known to have extremist elements, including some linked to Al Qaeda. Some of the same concerns were heard in our Egyptian policies. I am less critical of the Obama policy on Libya. Indeed, I thought the Administration struck the right tone — without military intervention. However, there is a general misconception that the “Arab Spring” necessarily means a triumph of democracy and human rights. Movements in both Libya and Egypt show the powerful pull of theocratic oppression. The denial of the separation of mosque and state (as well as religious freedom) undermines a host of other rights from free speech to free association. The Obama Administration undermined those rights further with its shocking support of a United Nation’s resolution that embraced the concept of blasphemy prosecutions.

With the move to Sharia law, Egypt is showing other signs of extremism. Sectarian violence, particularly against Christians, has increased with little intervention from the military.

The loss of Egypt to religious extremism would be extremely destabilizing for the regime. It will also raise a question of our continued massive support for the country. Even though we have cities and states breaking under economic pressures, we are still pouring billions in aid to both Israel and Egypt.

  1. The Occupy Wall Street volunteer kitchen staff launched a “counter” revolution yesterday — because they’re angry about working 18-hour days to provide food for “professional homeless” people and ex-cons masquerading as protesters.

For three days beginning tomorrow, the cooks will serve only brown rice and other spartan grub instead of the usual menu of organic chicken and vegetables, spaghetti bolognese, and roasted beet and sheep’s-milk-cheese salad.

They will also provide directions to local soup kitchens for the vagrants, criminals and other freeloaders who have been descending on Zuccotti Park in increasing numbers every day.

  2. Chase, B of A, whatever. Another big player in greed.

I suspect the pizza shop sold a lot of pizza to the protesters. They are like everyone else. They have to eat.

  3. OS the above video is not B of A but Chase. and yes what happened to the Marine is awful.

Let me see if I can put it to you another way.

My brother use to eat lunch everyday in Zucotti Park. My grandmother use to go every morning to feed the pigeons. My cousin use to go at night just to look at the stars.

The pizza owner at the corner could depend on my brother to buy a slice every couple of days. The convient store would sell my grandmother the seed. The local tavern depended on my cousin to come in for a few beers before he star gazed. They have not been able to do this for a couple of weeks. They have been deprived of there right to freedom.

What do you say to them.

  4. oops, try this 1….

  5. As far as the bank incident is concerned, when people went into the B of A office to close their accounts, they were arrested. They were account holders, in their own bank, and were being arrested! What is wrong with this picture?

What is wrong with that picture is they were closing their accounts and the B of A was not happy with that, or the attendant publicity.

So the bank customers were arrested when they went in to transact business on their account. The police locked the doors, would not let anyone leave and then systematically arrested the customers inside.

The lawyers here should have no trouble identifying at least a half dozen laws violated by the police in that one incident.

  6. The difference is the T-Party basically held there rallies on weekends. They also had money and supported businesses by spending money during theses events. The Occupy Wall Street folks are not spending money but are disrupting businesses as the video above shows. How would you like to be a business owner trying to support your family but can’t because your patrons can not visit your establishment becasue the streets are clogged. They are doing more harm then good.

  7. Bdaman, your proof is where? There are absolutely no video or photographic evidence of the OWS turning violent until the police have attacked them,

The Oakland protesters went in to two banks and disrupted their business. This was the prelude to the disbursement.

  8. Bdaman, your proof is where? There are absolutely no video or photographic evidence of the OWS turning violent until the police have attacked them, turned the sprinklers on them, or thrown tear gas and flash bang grenades at them. Then the police lie and say the protesters are throwing M-80s at them, but the only news and amateur video evidence shows the police doing the throwing of grenades and canisters. And shooting with rubber bullets and bean bags.

Just because Carney is flapping his lips and wringing his hands means absolutely nothing except he fears the protest will evolve into pitchforks and torches on the lawn of every state capitol in the country and possibly the streets of Washington, DC.

The only traffic interruptions have been at the hands of the authorities who were blocking roads and forbidding public transportation to stop anywhere near the protest sites which would have allowed protesters to come and go.

  9. Lottakatz they will be forced from the streets. People are getting fet up. The signs are there. It’s one thing to hold rallies and ask people to vote for change. Thats what the T Party did, held peaceful protest. It’s why the media is no longer giving them coverage. When the press secretary puts out a request to remain peaceful it means they are seeing signs they are turning violent. When that happens they will be met by force and this is happening. The Oakland demenstrators as with the rest are currently disruptimg other peoples means to make a living. People that are fortunate to have jobs can’t get to them. People who own businesses cant get new business because people won’t go there to but their goods or services.

  10. Bdaman, They’re polling well and spring is coming. Things aren’t going to get better if the current obstructionism in Washington doesn’t end. People are just going to be more angry in 5-6 months.

  11. Lotta it’s not gonna last much longer. People are getting frustrated with the OWS’ers You’ll see. Plus the weather is going to drive alot of them off. Again you’ll see.

  12. Thats what Obama has been using as his slogan for everything.

We can’t wait. He stole it from the socialist party from Sweden

  13. Dredd, good link and god news. From your link:

“Meanwhile, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Wednesday expressed his “disgust” at the global media for its graphic coverage of the ousted leader’s death.”

That’s right! The Russian’s always had the good manners to kill their deposed leaders and dissidents in secret, or at least away from the rest of the population. They knew what they were doing was wrong, morally if not legally, so they hid it, did it in the shadows. Man, to just put your murderous and torturous actions right out there on the street, flaunt it as it were, is insane. Your sh*is seriously messed up to do that… oh, wait…

  14. Bdaman:

    “Vi Kan Inte Vanta”

why did you post “We cant wait” in Swedish? WTF?

  15. Maybe not Bdaman, the OWM is polling well and occupy Oakland is kicking around the idea of a calling for a general strike. Many on this blawg have said that we in this country need to start using our economic weapons against the owners as is done in Europe, general strikes and boycotts. That kicks the level of force up a notch. Even what would qualify as a failed attempt at something like that would be a positive action if it was the first of many. People in the US have to be re-trained to take serious grass-roots political action. It takes time.

I read or saw a passage somewhere once that went kinda’ like ‘civilization is bisected by a river, time, and if you were on a boat in that river you would see here and there great naval battles, ships burning and battles won and lost. But if you look away from those momentary distractions you see the shores of the river, filled with cities and towns and all of the people there going along with their lives, endeavoring as the always do. The battles aren’t civilization, they’re punctuations. It’s what goes on in the places on the shore that is where civilization is made.’

I always liked that metaphor and find it relevant. Washington has been so unresponsive to the citizenry for so lone they are little more than a distraction. The people, many of the know that they must take steps and not rely silently on Washington. Over the long haul you need to leave it to the people on the shore to sort things out.

Yesterday night, the only MSM coverage I saw on TV about OWS was on Maddow- everybody else, starting at 4:00 pm was talking about Herman Cain: Herman Cain is irrelevant. The Republicans will do nothing to alleviate the problems plaguing us in the next 14 months, they will work to harm us as a political/religious mission: they are irrelevant. The Administration will look for cracks to slip through and procedural gaps to try to get some little thing done: it is irrelevant. The Democrats beholden to their masters will not initiate or fight for substantial or fundamental change that is needed even if the country is in jeopardy of collapse because of their inaction: they are irrelevant.

The people are on their own and have been for quite awhile. Maybe they will decide to reconfigure their civilization without the distraction of the smoke and mirrors and simple distractions that our politics provide. They’re smart. It’s Occupy Wall Street not Occupy Washington. They know who pulls the strings. Maybe Obama was right after all – “You are the change you’ve been waiting for.” Gee, it feels all kinda’ hope-y-chang-y.
