Leatherman: I Long To Kill Gays “In A Fleshy Way”

We have another preacher who is holding forth on homosexuality with some pretty shocking rhetoric. Dennis Leatherman of the Mountain Lake Independent Baptist Church in Oakland, Maryland can claim to be more merciful because, while he says that he positively aches to kill gays “in a fleshy way,” he cannot actually kill because of the Bible. That means that he cannot build the death camps of Rev. Worley — as much as he might want to.

During a 50-minute sermon entitled, “Homosexuality and the Bible,” Letherman is quoted as saying

“To be . . . have a tendency to be effeminate or homosexual is just as wicked as to have a tendency to be a womanizer . . . Sinful nature does not justify sinful behavior. Now what is our take? What is our response? . . . First of all, there is a danger of reacting in the flesh, of responding not in a scriptural, spiritual way, but in a fleshly way. Kill them all. Right? I will be very honest with you. My flesh kind of likes that idea. But it grieves the Holy Spirit. It violates Scripture. It is wrong. Number one, I put this down. How do we respond? We need to hold true to God’s Word. As despicable as it is to our thinking, we must not compromise. […]
The lies of the sodomite, same sex marriage promoters are going largely unchallenged in our society. It is a storm rolling across this country that is absolutely tearing everything up in its path and there are few of any, particularly in public positions who are standing up and saying, ‘This is wrong.’”

It is sad that in some quarters that passes for moral correctness. The disappointment in having to adhere to the limits of the Bible is palpable and painful. Just as you have a righteous desire to murder, the Bible steps in and tells you to let gays and lesbians live.

The Church has responded to the controversy with a curious distinction:

In a recent 50 minute message on homosexuality, Pastor Leatherman made a 5 second reference to his “flesh.” The term “flesh” in the Bible simply refers to our fallen, sinful nature. It is through the “new birth” of trusting Jesus Christ as Saviour that our nature is changed (2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 5:19-24). Here is the full quote in question:

“First of all, there is a danger of reacting in the flesh, of responding not in a scriptural, spiritual way, but in a fleshly way. ‘Kill them all. Right?’ I will be very honest with you. My flesh kind of likes that idea. But it grieves the Holy Spirit. It violates Scripture. It is wrong.”
You cannot get any clearer, “it is wrong” to respond to homosexuality in any other way than a scriptural, spiritually mature and firmly compassionate way. Perhaps rewording the statement to say, “THE flesh” as opposed to “MY flesh” would more accurately express the meaning, but to suggest that Pastor Leatherman or the church advocates violence of any type toward homosexuals is to completely misconstrue what his message was saying.

I am unsure how the use of a definite article materially changes the meaning: ‘Kill them all. Right?’ I will be very honest with you. THE flesh kind of likes that idea. But it grieves the Holy Spirit.” Much better.

  1. Yes Bron, as the great man once said “All that is required for bad men to fail if for good men to do nothing”

  2. Get your box of saltiness out so the quackers can be filled….. This is just utterly stupid…..

Mespo, what religion that they speak of would condone this type of behavior? I have read books that the Jesus they promote might have swung both ways……

  3. I guy named “Letherman” is just asking for “closeted gay rumors” .

  4. Otteray,

    Is this article you mean?

Highest Number Of Anti-Gay Murders Ever Reported In 2011: The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs

    Excerpt:
More murders motivated by anti-gay bias occurred last year than any year since the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs began collecting data in 1998, the national advocacy organization reported this week.

In 2011, 30 fatally violent hate crimes were committed against lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender victims, 3 more than the previous year’s total. At the same time, overall reports of anti-gay hate violence were down last year. But the authors of the report don’t think the drop in reports of violence actually reflects a drop in violence. The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs collects its data through 41 member programs across the country who receive calls and reports of LGBT hate crimes in the local communities. The authors of the report said they suspected a link between the rise in murders and the drop in overall reports of violence — when more murders occur the small centers are overwhelmed and able to conduct less community outreach.

“I think that hate violence against these communities has been going on for a very long time and the reports that we’re seeing may not even be a reflection on the true pervasiveness of the violence,” said Chai Jindasurat, one of the authors of the report. “I think we’re really just getting the tip of the iceberg here.”

  5. Unfortunately this man has a pulpit and taxpayer dollars to preach his hate. No one should dismiss him as a fringe voice; he voices the views of many in positions of power and his voice also reaches those who look upon the Bible not as an uncomfortable limit but as a exhortation.
The professional Christians bear no resembalance to the man they say they follow. You will see little serious push back from church leaders.

  6. DonS, some of their pronouncements seem more fitting for The Onion than the pulpit.

  7. The part of the “explanation”/excuse that get’s me, “It is through the “new birth” of trusting Jesus Christ as Saviour that our nature is changed”, is classic. These simplistic thumpers are that deluded but, fine, for them.

I guess Rev. Leatherman just doesn’t trust because his nature seems quite nasty.

  8. The peculiar response of the church to the pastor’s mad ravings remind me of the peculiar responses of many of the appeals courts to ravings of some trial court judges, and I note that Roger Gunderson has already picked up on the possibility. There actually are judges who — perhaps while skipping some of the sillier rhetoric — do this kind of stuff with people’s lives, and the problem is that the appellate courts, more eager to preserve the whole “semblance of law” issue as much as Christians want to preserve the “semblance of religiosity” issue, issue crap like this in response more often than you would want to imagine.

  9. raff, you can call yourself anything you want. If I called myself a refrigerator, it would not make me one. Just because they call themselves Christians does not make it so.

  10. A couple of days ago I saw a news article about attacks on gays. Seems there has been an uptick in the number of such attacks, many of them fatal, in the past year. If you have a fire, it is not a good idea to loan the crazies cans of gasoline. That is exactly what these hateful preachers are doing.

  11. Why do people take this stuff seriously? This a small time minister trying to make a name for himself. Now he is going to be martyred philosophically and gain great esteem from his fellows. Had he not been mentioned he would have been a nothing.

Better to have let this dog sleep.

  12. Could it be, “those who can do those who can’t preach”?

  13. I wonder how the good rev would feel if some gay rights leader said he longed to kill Christians “in a fleshy way”? I’m sure he would be OK with that.

Same with the death camp minister – I bet he mass forwards emails about liberals setting up FEMA camps for re-education of Christians.

Its all about projection with these brain dead, fear spewing hate mongers.
