A disturbing lawsuit has been filed against the Baltimore County Police Department by Linda Johnson over the death of her husband, Architect Carl D. Johnson on May 27, 2010. Johnson was pepper sprayed, tasered, and beaten before his death on the way home from Bible study class.
Linda Johnson is suing the Maryland State Police, Baltimore County Police, individual commanders and six officers. Her lawsuit claims that her husband suffered a diabetic attack after calling a friend and crashing on I-795. First to the scene was State Trooper Davon Parker who pepper sprayed Johnson after he lowered his window of his car, which had crashed into the median. When Johnson got out of the car, Parker clubbed him on the knee and then allegedly another officer (Loss) clubbed him. When Baltimore County Police Officer Nicholas Wolferman arrived, he also allegedly beat Johnson. Three more officers arrived and one, Baltimore County Officer Andrew O’Neill tasered Johnson twice. Officer Loss then allegedly punched him in the face. Eight more officers then arrived — leaving one wondering if there were any officers left at headquarters. The complaint states that “there were approximately 52 individuals that responded to the scene.”
We have been following cases involving the use of tasers and excessive force by police. However, Baltimore has been cited as a standout jurisdiction in the use of tasers — leading to calls for investigation.
Johnson was only 48 and lives behind his wife of 27 years. Their son, Darren Johnson, predeceased his parents and Linda has now lost her husband.

I just read some of the older comments. VIOLENT? This man and his wife were godly people coming home from Bible study. He had probably not eaten in a while, and the
diabetic seizures set in, followed by an unfortunate car wreck. He need food and care, some insulin, not being beaten and tazered to death. For shame. As a Christian, he would have been totally cooperative with the cops, but was unable to respond to their advances because of his seizure and physical lilmitations.
My mother who was born at the turn of the last century told me something as a child that I never forgot. Since the time of the Roman Empire, the police have been the dregs of society.
On the ‘race’ point, the picture in the article shows him to be a caucasian.
The police were over-violent with a man, who if he was going into insolin shock, could not possibly harm them. I know, because I’m hypoglacemic, and when I start to go into ‘shock’ I’m totally defenseless, my toes curl, my hands retract, and are uncontrollable. The man would have hurt himself but no-one else. There is no strength in the limbs, they are curled and the eyes don’t focus well. Diabetic shock is next and they are in bad trouble within a really short time. The police should be ashamed and punished for this man’s death. It could have been avoided with talking to the spouse and understanding the man’s problem.

Zimmerman was not a cop. He also didn’t get any help shooting his chosen victim.
Also, whereas Johnson was obviously too sick to defend himself, Trayvon Martin, who was neither a diabetic nor a recent accident victim, defended himself valiantly before being murdered.
Also, in the Johnson case, the cops were out of their vehicle and the victim was in his vehicle when the event began.
So I guess you’re right; people should stop comparing these two cases. One of them has resulted in multiple killers none of whom has been charged with a crime; the other WAS going that route until George Zimmerman got charged with second-degree murder.

My wife is a paramedic, and diabetic shock along with patients having seizures resulting in MVA’s and auto-ped accidents is somewhat common! My guess is that because of his condition, he probably didn’t know what was happening to him, thank GOD!! Usually the paramedics don’t administer tasers, and repeated shots to the body to bring them out of it. These cops are criminals and should be in jail for murder!!

The media report what they choose to report. They would not have reported Trayvon Martin’s death unless a large number of people had made a fuss about it. If you figure that 50 officers were involved in the Baltimore cop-frenzy, it is unlikely that there is any newspaper in Baltimore that was not capable of being influenced (against reporting this event except as an automobile accident or an obituary) by some official or some person of importance in the community.
I remember a case that was reported by three news sources in Columbia, Georgia one evening. The next morning a General with an office in the Pentagon made some phone calls, including one to me. He wanted to meet with me immediately and I had to put him off until 1 p.m. When we met in his office, he was most desirous of having the story returned to complete anonymity. When I left the meeting we had not reached consensus on what should happen. The next day I spoke with four news sources from Columbia, Georgia including all three that had previously reported the situation. ALL FOUR of them said they were no longer interested in the story and would not report any more developments. When I finally got one reporter to speak with me about the reason, she said, “Look, we get half of our news stories from [Fort Benning] and we have a good relationship with them. We’re not going to endanger that good relationship for one good story!”
2010, and were hearing about it now. You have to give black people credit, if Johnson were black their would have been hell to pay. Or is it the media that droped the ball on this or maybe because he didn”t look like Ob son. Media do your job.
Indiana just passed a law that let’s people use deadly force against police that are threatening their live without probable cause just for stupid stuff like this.
My son got beat up when he was going to UW-Oshkosh by some punk officers. He was wearing a sweatshirt the same color as someone who had just committed a burglary. There was nothing else that fit his description and the perpetrator’s. He has scars on his arm and his room mate took pictures immediately following. He didn’t resist at all.
Bill Cantrell, I agree with what you say. This has nothing to do with the military. By the way, the man who was brutally attacked served in the Navy during WW2. Generally I am on the side of the police when claims are made about violence etc. but in this case it is apparent their actions were unjustified – to put it politely.

I looked up on the Internet the man who was driving the car. He was a successful and highly regarded landscape architect and urban planner. He rehabilitated old estates to restore their former beauty.

Most police today never served in the military. They are these kids that you think so much about that play these games that teach you to kill everything and everyone. Kids that were never punished for anything they did. Military people think enough of you to give their lives so you can put them down.

I can envision prison terms for over 50 officers, and for a few of them perhaps 50 years without parole, AND civil liability for what they cost this woman.
