Help Wanted: Angry White Guys

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R. S.C.) is always good for a sound bite (though civil libertarians are still smarting from “free speech is a great idea, but we’re in a war.”). Now Graham has identified the greatest threat to the GOP: the declining numbers of “angry white guys.”

Graham told the Washington Post that “The demographics race we’re losing badly. We’re not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term.”

It is not clear if this is a decline in white males alone or whether the demographic decline of whites (including white men) has been magnified by the decline in anger among white men. There is also the seasonal aspect of anger to fit into the calculation. For example, I tend to get very angry when the Chicago Bears play the Green Bay Packers. Indeed, if the calculation is based on raw anger levels instead of individual angry men, I could easily make up for reduced numbers of males when the Packers prevail against God’s team. (Of course, with Romney’s selection of a die-hard Packers fan for his Vice Presidential candidate, my anger issues are unlikely to be addressed by the current ticket).

The key is to reach angry men at offices and funnel that anger from common anger producing objects like computers to President Obama with slogans like “Obama Jams Copiers”:

  1. Most of the things that make us explode, are nearly irrelevant as little as an hour later when we have calmed down. We have a three year old son. When he starts to freak out – because a toy is not working or, whatever, we make him take 5 deep breaths with us. It really works allot of the time. Hopefully, that will give him some additional tools to cope when he is older.

  2. I think, as those videos evidence, there is quite enough anger and stress to go around without politicians, of either side, stoking it. Wow, how much stress one must be under to crack like that. Somehow, we all need to learn to get along or we will not survive as a species.

Malisha, Whenever us kids[4] would spout anger @ her, as long as it wasn’t vile, my mom would calmly say, “Better out than in.” I adopted that philosophy w/ my kids and called it the umpire rule. They couldn’t personalize it. They couldn’t say, “You’re an assh$&le.” They could say, “Only a stupid, assh%@le tyrant would make a rule like that.” That was right on the line…but acceptable. Anger is energy that must be released..”Better out than in.” If not released it turns to resentment and depression.

  5. Nick S, everything’s gonna be OK. I have been angry for so long, at such a high volume, that I can probably single-handedly keep our batteries charted. Of course I’m not exactly a white guy but as I RADIATE anger, it can probably be picked up by others — could be, like magnetism, it deputizes or something. Anyway, as I live and breathe, this is a renewable resource.

From the number of police caught on tape barbarically assaulting citizens (probably only 2% of what actually transpires that’s not caught on tape) as well as the number of crazed office workers who may also bring an Uzi to the job I suspect there’s not a significant decline in the number of angry white guys.

  10. I think there are plenty of angry white and black guys. There’s nothing wrong w/ anger. Some people, mostly women, think anger is inherently bad. it’s not.

  11. Lindsey had a pal from South Carolina who invented the Southern Strategy for the RepubliCons. Lee Atwater was his name. If you Google Lee Atwater and the Southern Strategy then you will see how Lindsey came to power and how his power rests on the old farts who are more likely to be racists than the younger generation. So, in this election the big RepubliCon push is with old farts and white old farts of all parts of the country who are being kindled with notions that Obama is nuthin but a N guy. So, Lindsey, keep working on the angry white farts and history will judge you for what you are.: A Klansman in a suit and tie. Go watch the video of the cops in Minnesota beating up the black guy and get your rocks off Lindsey.

  16. At whom are these angry white guys angry? This Angry White Man Syndrome has been a cancer in America since the mid-1960s. Blacks had the unmitigated gall to demand equal treatment in America and to the shock and horror of white guys, were actually given equal access to our country. Then, in the early 70s it was women who began demanding getting out from the yoke of male oppression. Wow, what a blow that was. Quick on the heals of women’s efforts came farm workers, primarily Hispanic and gays. Within a span of 10 short years white men, who had rigidly controlled the who and how of jobs, who got an education and who benefitted from the country’s legal system was turned on its head. I watched the men in my family go through this period and saw their anger at every available minority that dared challenge their supremacy. Though AWMS is still alive and well (and on display in Tampa this week), thankfully, it’s more like an ugly, red, pussy pimple on the ass of American life rather than the pervasive political and economic driver it was not so long ago.

    They are right to be concerned from the standpoint that they’ve spent 50 years grousing about people actually having access to all the blessings of America instead of embracing it. As a result of reason actually prevailing, women, blacks, etal. are more educated and assimilated and are now exerting their own political muscle over the insane bigotry of these small minded angry white men. It’s quite evident in the contrast between President Obama and Romney. One guy is the full-throated champion of only the 1%ers and Senator Graham’s angry white guys while the other guy represents the interests of America.

    The environment is getting cleaner and healthier. The nation’s air and waterways, as a whole, are much healthier than they were just a few decades ago. Efforts to reduce pollution, encourage recycling, educate the public, and avoid ecological degradation have been a success.
