Three U.S. congressmen and a high-ranking government official gathered this week to praise a man heralded for his morals and leadership. That man is L. Ron Hubbard and Texas Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, Indiana Republican Rep. Dan Burton, Illinois Democratic Rep. Danny Davis and Liz Gibson, Senior Program Manager at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, gathered to celebrate his legacy.

While European countries have either banned or prosecuted Scientology as a criminal enterprise and Hubbard was pursued by various criminal investigations and civil litigants, the VIPs joined in the opening of the new D.C. office (for full disclosure, I was invited to visit the opening of the headquarters but declined).
Jackson Lee declared “I want to thank L. Ron Hubbard for recognizing that courage is not rewarded but it is valued. And to be able to have the wonderment of people coming together and ensuring that people come together for peace. That’s what I see in the Church, that you have come together for peace. I welcome and support that,” she said.
Notably, both Burton and Davis praised the church’s campaign on child medication even though critics charge that this is an outgrowth of Hubbard’s hatred for psychiatry and psychology.
Many are likely to view this high-level support as problematic. Yet, even mainstream churches like the Catholic Church have been the subject of criminal and civil claims. Should these members be criticized for support of the Scientology record while others appear at other religious sites, including the support for faith-based politics and programs by the last four presidents?

OS,
Hug to you and an extra long one for your little girl
Matt Johnson,
Thanks … will do
OS,
I’m not too good at this. Condolences. That’s simplistic. Time doesn’t always heal all wounds, but the pain will fade with time.
OS,
She will always be with you and you with her. No matter what.
Blouise,
Maybe that is why I am no good at pool!
Thanks Slarts!

pete9999,
Words With Friends is a different game (the board and several of the letter values are different) and both it and Scrabble can be played from either Facebook or a smartphone.
Gene,
You can play through a Facebook account—just download the Facebook Scrabble app and send me a friend request and I’ll be able to challenge you (or vice versa).
on f/b it’s called words with friends or somesuch, but it’s still scrabble.
pool and redheads don’t mix.
can’t give both the attention they deserve. (only enough blood for one head at a time)
Blouise,
Me? Good at pool? Why . . . someone might get the idea I’ve spent a lot of time in bars.
Truthfully, I’m not as good as when I played all the time but then again I’m a lot more sober and less prone to pick up redheads than when I played all the time. I’m a bit streaky now. I play well enough most nights, but when I’m hot, I’m still fusion.
As for Scrabble? I still haven’t gotten around to deleting my FB account yet and I have a stupid phone on purpose, but if we can find a way to do it via computer? I’m your huckleberry (double word score).

Matt Johnson,
I’ve been having trouble all day … I have to keep clearing out my history and cache and then relaunching.
==========================
Run Disk Defragment.
gbk,
You’re absolutely right (especially if you play with the doubling cube). If you don’t want to use a throwaway (and don’t mind me having your email… bwa-ha-ha-HA-ha… er… um… where was I?), send me an email at (first name)@(last name).net and I can connect you with Blouise.
Kevin Kesseler
Blouise,
Nope, not on facebook, but I can post a throwaway email tomorrow. Making rissoto right now and really gotta stay on it.
What happed to OS?
“As far as the mathematics of games go, I’m much happier with the applied probability in backgammon”
It is a great game from this perspective. Many assume the game is based on luck because there are dice involved, but this is not true. And whether your innate strategy is to play a running game or a point game one has to adapt to the reality of their opponent’s rolls.
Gotta run … if y’all have a minute … send some gentle thoughts to OS
Blouise,
You vixen, you…
gbk,
Are you on facebook? If you are, when we get set up give me a throwaway email to initially get in touch with you or I’ll give you one.
Slarti,
Every class had 4 or 5 problems to solve during a test except for my class … we had 1. The teacher would leave the room after writing the problem on the board, turn around at the door on his way out and wink at me.
Blouise,
A meetup would be great! I suspect I can’t do it though due to a rapidly dwindling cash reserve with no refresh prospects in sight. But by all means please let me know the ifs of the when and where’s.
Blouise,
I empathize with the guys—I once got caught helping a cute girl on a test in an advanced math class with 8 people. We were apparently so smart that we didn’t get a teacher—incredibly poor resource allocation, but at the time (8th grade), I was happy to get an hour per day to sit in the library and talk with my classmates (except when we’d get kicked out for talking too much an have to sit in the back of the regular algebra class…).
