Edward Archbold, 32, had secured the world’s least appealing title this week: champion roach eater. However, the Florida man then collapsed and died in front of the Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach.
Archbold also ate various other bugs and had competed earlier in the superworm-eating contest. He was competing for a python but vomited not long after winning the competition. After winning the roach-eating competition, Archbold vomited and collapsed.
An autopsy has been held to try to isolate the cause of death. If it is due to some form of contamination from either the worms or the roaches, there could be an obvious lawsuit against the store for sponsoring such a bizarre contest. However, the question of plaintiffs’ conduct would loom high over the court.
Michael Adams, professor of entomology at the University of California at Riverside, also noted that “some people do have allergies to roaches.”
The participants signed waivers “accepting responsibility for their participation in this unique and unorthodox contest.”

I see eating contests as seeking a vain thing. Gorging for glory, then whoops end of story..
Alex Karass just died @ 77. In honor we should all eat beans, sit around a campfire, and fart. To think that when Mel Brooks did that scene in Blazing Saddles it was cutting edge. I’m glad our culture has become more scatological. Thanks, Alex and Mel.
We have never been to Remulack. We are from France. I have only heard of what is eaten there. I have no cone head. I am second generation Hymen, first name Hymee, once removed. Google all you want. Google a guy named Lee Atwater and find out how the Romney strategy was laid out for Nixon and Raygun years ago. Lee was from SC, not France. Cockroaches are good for you. Maybe he ate one whole and it crawled around on his insides and ate something. Deep fried is best. Remove the wings and legs and they are delicious. Skip the worms.
Candy Picker, I ate a lot of “roaches” in college.
I ate a roach once!
These kind of stories bug me.
OK,this is totally unbelievable! NOBODY has mentioned anything about this being in FLORIDA!!!
I heard about this yesterday and wanted to share with ya’ll, but here it is! The first thing that popped out of my mouth when I read about it was ”anybody this stupid deserves to die.” and then, with a PYTHON for a prize? Seriously? Only in Florida (OK, now ya’ll have ME doing it)!
They immediately cancelled the scheduled python swallowing contest …
Sure blame the whole cockroach….. Looking at the acceptable level of rodent parts in food…… Makes one not want to eat….
Google insists that it is spelled Remulak. Remulack brought up nothing but a red underline. Which of you has the cone-head. And I am wearing the dunce cap as I was still buying Hymee’s skit, errr sketch.
Keep it up Hymee. tu m’amuse copain.
Frankly, you made my mouth water,
Hymee – you have obviously never been near Remulack. The favored ingestion of mass quantities is shredded swine flesh and unborn chicken embryos!
Blame it on the worms, not the roaches. People eat roaches on Remulack all the time. In France they are a delicacy.
I guess that sometimes you can have too much of a good thing.
At the end of one of the videos is briefly shown a small plastic bowl containing white granular powder with grains on the rim. I bet someone knew he would eat a lot of roaches and spiked his container with something designed to cause him to puke – for laughs. He ended up eating so much that he got poisoned.
You read it here first.
Common sense. Less common every day. First, I read of a woman texting while walking along a mountain top and then falling off the cliff before she finished her text. Then, it’s Sweet & Sour Road Kill. Now, someone dies from consuming too many contaminated insects. What could possibly be the next chapter in dumb and dumber? ………..Hmmmmm………..I know!:

I don’t think they deserved it.
Sad the man had to die in this manner. A bit odd that the chosen photo someone offered to the public is of him having a shirt that read “Truth , Justice” in Latin.
Playing games with life, in retrospect.
I would wait until the autopsy, but perhaps it might be worthwhile to suspend all cockroach eating contests until further notice. Apparently the disqust of eating them is no longer enough of a deterrant.
as sam elliott said in “the big lebowski” “sometimes you eat the bar, and sometimes the bar eats you”
Holy crap. How can someone eat this stuff? All of this to win a snake. Stupid is as stupid does.
