ISIS Orders All Mannequins in Mosul To Wear Veils

250px-Holt_Renfrew_MannequinsThe Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) continues to show the world how systemic murder and terror can be justified in the name of religion as the work of the faithful. Now, after brutalizing the population of Mosul, ISIS has turned its attention to those godless tramps of fashion: mannequins. ISIS has ordered that all mannequins be covered in veils as another application of medieval Sharia law.

The reason is the prohibition under Sharia law of depictions of the human form. Somehow covering the face excuses the fact that the rest of the mannequin is the human form, but Allah is apparently satisfied by a cloth over the face according to ISIS.

Mannequins continue to be the focus of clerics who seek to block their corrosive impact on the morals of society (here and here).

On the positive side, this is the most moderate move of ISIS which notably did not behead the mannequins in a public execution after forcing them to convert to Islam.

  1. Annie, in my opinion, it points to political correctness in the U.S. that sex education does not include at least one lesson on FGM. The lesson should:
    – instruct male students that the practice is barbaric and unacceptable,
    – instruct female students that police officers are the ones they should seek out when family members broach the subject, and
    – instruct female students that if family members attempt to take them back to the old country for FGM, they should simply scream in front of any uniformed officer at the airport.

  2. “Shame upon those whores of the Ladies Fashion Department, tempting men with their stone cold stares of beauty.”

Lets not forget their sisters the inflatable dolls who do so much to tempt men from the paths of righteousness.

To paraphrase Henry Higgins ‘why can’t an inanimate object be more like a man?”

I agree with your general complaint. JT is being cute here when he should be pointing out that ISIS has begun to expel all Christians from their area, stealing every possession of theirs as they leave.
    http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/middle-east/140722/the-islamic-state-marking-christian-homes-kicking-out-resid

But then again, JT used a photo of Kim Jong-il on his North Korean articles regarding Kim Jong-un, until I repeatedly pointed it out to him.

Iran and other countries have declared music to be haram, i.e. forbidden. And Islamists use PCs and the Internet to pursue jihad, yet there is no mention of computers or networks anywhere in the Koran. Religious nuts tend to be rather stupid and inconsistent. And as you know from your criminology days, violent people are often stupid.

P.S. Nick, you already read the above article.

  4. Saucy, that’s some horrendous news about ISIS demanding femalee genital mutilation for girls and women. That would be tantamount to torturing millions of women. It obviously isn’t something that is routinely done (as barbaric as it is anywhere) in Iraq.

  5. Eric – we are required by International Treaties to restore order in any country we invade.

mespo – if your mother wore a veil in a Catholic Church in the ’60s it was because she wanted to or her parents made her. The only rule for women was skirts and a head covering. I have seen women wear a handkerchief on their head to fulfill their clothing requirement. Often First Communion outfits for girls included a veil.

  6. Dave wrote “Some ignore certain passages while others take them to be literally true”

The only Christians who advocate fire and brimstone, i.e. from the Old Testament, are in the U.S. It is solely an American thing to profess to believe in Jesus, while amassing a large pile of loot and ignoring his message of peace.

But in the case of Islam, there is a very good reason for Dave’s comment. As I wrote before:

The Koran is not arranged chronologically like the Bible. It is arranged by size of chapters. One must study the Koran to know the chronological order of the chapters. ‘M’ wrote somewhat non-violent Koranic passages at the beginning of his career because he was not free to express himself fully. Later he wrote the really nasty passages. According to the principle of abrogation, his later passages supersede his earlier ones. That’s why liberals can find peaceful passages and point to Islam being a religion of peace, while Muslims understand that only the later, violent ones are relevant.

For more information, read “The Problem of Abrogation in the Quran” at answering-islam DOT org. I would include the actual URL, but I’m tired of my posts being sent to moderation.

But Islamists have now taken it a step further. ISIS has ordered that all females aged 11-46 undergo female genital mutilation.

If mannequins had genitals, they would surely be ordered to undergo the same hacking.

  7. Justice Holmes: “There was a lot of chuckling about this order but when you consider they are cleansing all Christians and other infidels from their midst with almost total silence from the international community one wonders if groups like ISIS will continue to get a pass and for how long.”

There hasn’t been “total silence from the international community”. Don’t forget, we recently freed the 5 worst Taliban commanders in our custody. ISIS seems at least modeled on the Taliban. The practically unconditional release of the senior Taliban commanders is more than a pass – it signals endorsement by the only actor in the West that owns the proven capability (proven in Iraq, no less) of stopping ISIS.

“The NYT was also most complimentary about how ISIS has restored order to the parts of Iraq it controls.”

Geopolitically critical Iraq undergoing a pluralistic liberal transformation under American protection should have been the long game-changer. Instead, especially given the success in Iraq of the paradigmatic liberal application, the Counterinsurgency “Surge”, it’s dismaying how rapidly we’ve moved such a long, long way from President Kennedy’s oath (1961), “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty,” President Clinton’s counsel (1998, specifically regarding the US-led enforcement with Iraq) that “In the century we’re leaving, America has often made the difference between chaos and community; fear and hope. Now, in a new century, we’ll have a remarkable opportunity to shape a future more peaceful than the past — but only if we stand strong against the enemies of peace,” and President Bush’s pledge (2001), “As long as the United States of America is determined and strong, this will not be an age of terror; this will be an age of liberty, here and across the world.”

    From http://learning-curve.blogspot.com/2014/05/operation-iraqi-freedom-faq.html :

President Bush was right to enforce the Gulf War ceasefire and then stay in Iraq to secure the peace the same way the US stayed to secure the peace in Europe and Asia after World War 2. When Bush left office, the Iraq mission was a success.

President Obama was wrong to leave Iraq prematurely. America’s protection was needed for the continued progression of Iraq’s pluralistic liberal reform and constructive role in the Middle East and the welfare of the Iraqi people. Instead, the feared danger of Obama’s feckless ‘lead from behind’ approach to the Arab Spring and irresponsible exit from Iraq is being realized.

  8. And if those trampy mannequins refuse to wear the veil, it won’t be the fault of righteous men if they rape her or beat her, maybe they’ll even stone her. Shame upon those whores of the Ladies Fashion Department, tempting men with their stone cold stares of beauty.

  9. mespo,
Some women still do wear veils and hats, but they don’t cover their face. It’s an act of reverence. In Ancient times even men covered their heads in prayer and temple. That’s why Jews wear yumakas and keep their heads covered.
I believe that these Islamic terrorists are using religion to take over regions for the sake of THEIR OWN HUNGER FOR POWER. Some Islamic Muslims want to live in peace and accept other religions, but they also want to be free to live their faith.

  10. This shows the silliness of ISIS. They are driving out Christians whose families have lived in Northern Iraq for centuries. They take over their homes and tell them to leave or be killed. I’m trying to understand why silliness gets more attention than travesty. Can anyone help me in that regard.

  11. My human pal for whom I am guide dog had a mother in law who had to wear a veil when she approached the alter at her cat o lic church. If you had seen her you would understand why.
We need a three state solution for Iraq. One pirate territory for each religion. One dictator for each pirate territory to control the masses. No more cat o lics or masses in any of the three pirate territories.

Years ago the world was assessed by divisions: First World, Second World, Third World. We need to go well beyond this simple division. There are territories with no governance. There are territories with some governance which purport to be nation states. There are nation states which do not subscribed to human rights accords. There are nation states which do subscribed to human rights accords. There are nation states which subscribed but do not adhere to human rights accords.

Today, take Ukraine for example. No one should fly there, be a tourist, do business with them, or even fly over. Nigeria is the same.

  12. Well, if they don’t have eyes??? Maybe ISIS is the department of redundancy department. Anyway, I would think maybe there was a shakedown–if there is anyplace religion stops in a hurry, it’s for money. Maybe, after they saw the markup on clothing, they decided to get a mafia-style cut of the action– and as a sidenote said, “well… put a veil on those things.” That makes everything OK. Seems to work here.

  13. ISIS is really cleaning house and consolidating their grip on Mosul.

Now, the Islamic State armed group has solidified its grip on the northern city of Mosul and imposed a deadline over the July weekend demanding Christians either convert,
pay a tax or “face the sword.” With that ultimatum, tens of thousands of Christians fled, leaving most of what they own behind.

Along with Christians, other minorities not falling into line will also come under threat, and Iraq has several groups adhering to very old religions.

  14. Reminds me of the time Attorney General Ashcroft directed DOJ personnel to cover up the breasts of some art … statues … sculptures.

  15. That story makes no sense. Isis is the same force that summarily executes Christians, Shia and Sunni Muslims, yet would allow someone to still sell western style dresses as long as he veils their faces? Who came up with this story, the Onion?

  16. Professor-just for the sake of accuracy- it ‘s the CHRISTIAN population of Mosul that is being brutalized.

  17. Violent murders who know the mind of god,,,,,,,,

This is the face of theocracy. Control in everything from the most serious to the most Trivial. Death is their answer to almost eery infraction. There was a lot of chuckling about this order but when you consider they are cleansing all Christians and other infidels from their midst with almost total silence from the international community one wonders if groups like ISIS will continue to get a pass and for how long. An example of religious privilege?

The NYT was also most complimentary about how ISIS has restored order to the parts of Iraq it controls. One wonders what’s up with that.

  18. It isn’t in the name of religion: it’s doing as religion mandates. Some ignore certain passages while others take them to be literally true. Such is the danger of all myth.
