German Newspaper Fire Bombed After Running Cover With Charlie Hebdo Cartoons

thHamburger Morgenpost was reportedly fire bombed today in Hamburg after the German newspaper that reprinted cartoons of Islamic prophet Mohammed from the French satirical paper Charlie Hebdo.

250px-CharliehebdoCharlie Hebdo was the scene of the massacre this last week after publishing its own cover with the mocking cartoons of Mohammad.

The paper has put the cartoon on its front page with the headline “This much freedom must be possible!”.

Notably, despite the obvious news value of readers seeing the cartoons in question, U.S. media has largely refused to reprint the cartoons — as opposed to many in France. It is an act of self-censorship that is troubling and is reminiscent of the disgraceful decision of Yale University Press a few years ago. Yale University Press published Jytte Klausen’s “The Cartoons That Shook the World” (on the cartoons that led to riots and over 200 killed in protests worldwide). However, Yale removed the the 12 cartoons from the book so not to insult Muslims. Thus, you could read the book but not actually see the cartoons themselves. It was a decision by Yale University Press that is still discussed as anti-intellectual and cowardly in academic circles.

The New York Daily News even blurred out a picture of an editor holding up a newspaper with one of the cartoons.

Here is a link to the cartoons beyond the one shown above on the cover of Charlie Hebdo: The Charlie Hebdo Cartoons.

  1. I look forward to the explanations and excuses that will be offered by the the Al Qaeda wing of the Democratic Party and main stream media.

They are sure to be quite creative and amusing.

  2. A demonstration with everyone holding a copy of Charlie Hebdo with the picture seems appropriate.

  3. The very point of the “untrue” Muslims who proclaim “Allah Akbar!” as they kill is to instill fear of more of the same. Al Queda, and the Islamic State in Iraq and Lebanon (ISIL) are two branches of “untrue” Muslims (who just wrongly think they are True Muslims) are an enemy.

How to deal with an enemy who hides among True Muslims I know not.

Perhaps it is because the moderate True Muslims do not join forces and denounce them. Out of fear for their lives at the hands of the “untrue” Muslims.

Targeting all Muslims seems a bit much. It would be like claiming all Catholic Priests are pedophiles. But just as the problem of pedophile priests must be condemned by the Catholic leadership, so too must the leading Muslim clerics. Otherwise it is tacit approval.

  4. I’m not clear why JT could not post the images on his blog? Do copyright laws apply when there is no financial gain and the images are themselves part of a new story?

  5. Being offended by the ideas of another culture has been the justification of many wars and extensive terrorism.

The most egregious weakness of religion may be its resistance to adjustment as cultural conditions vary. A behavior in a majority Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Hindu, or Freethought community is in a different context than that same behavior in another culture. When one moves outside of one’s own culture, one cannot expect the same rules to apply. The US govt. has found this out in its recent attempts at nation building.

  6. Newspapers in the US are generally filled with gutless yellow pie slingers. There isn’t much courage left in the media that’s more concerned with profits and access than reporting.

Is is also filled with people that may be well meaning, but have so completely bought in the multicultural mumbo-jumbo that they are having a difficult time proclaiming a culture, or at least a significant portion of one, as inferior. The Islamist culture is one that stands against everything multiculturalism and equality does, yet newspapers STILL can’t come to denounce it. That’s telling in and of itself.

  7. The PC cowardly MSM in the US are abandoning their brothers and sisters in Europe. Shameful and gutless. EVERY newspaper in the US should publish.

  8. Oh, I see the gloves coming off real soon. Germans are even less tolerant than us when it comes to this kinda stuff. They should have stuck w/ the French.

  9. I recall reading sometime back that segments of the fundie Islam community thought the ubiquitous “Bubba Jesus” image was a picture of the prophet. Got all up in arms about it, but since the pic is all over the internet, I suppose they didn’t know who to shoot or blow up. The article read almost like something from The Onion. The humor blogger, Jesus General, uses the ‘Bubba Jesus’ image on his web site (link below).

  10. For whatever reasons, the al Qaeda wing of Islamic terror club has decided to ramp up the “debate” with the West. War is just down the road. I foresee that we will invade Yemen and other pirate and terrorist territories and will have some European Allies. France for one. Germany for third and Brits for second. France has a history of colonizing African pirate territories and may be the best of he lot at seeking out the bad guys. The Germans would like to help but they do not want to get tagged with starting another Holocaust. Why does al Qaeda seek an invasion of Yemen and their other pirate territories? Good question. Lots of conspiracy theories are going to rise up. Is the CIA behind it? Why? So we can have more war for the Military Industrial Complex and the Koch Brothers and their ilk. If you have children of military age do not encourage them to enlist now. We will be in battles soon. The drones can not do it all. The frogs will probably be invading some place this weekend.

  11. I’ll save Po the effort: No true Muslim would do this.

So I suggest the cops look amongst the many untrue Muslims.

  12. So, Turley, who has the slipperiest slope, the US or France. You posted in the Post, that leftist rag, that the French Government is the real threat to freedom of speech, as opposed to the thugs. Great grabber, but you downplay the censorship in the US at all levels. There seems to be a hands off freedoms cult in the US that rises up at any sign of what might be censorship or perhaps responsibility. Typically it mirrors a John Wayne or Daniel Boone myth regarding the right to own guns or aircraft carriers, a ‘don’t tread on me’ thing which spills over from the chaos and movies of war into this evolving society.

France knocks the ball back and forth. Their revolution started in an indoor tennis court. Americans look down their noses at the French for supposed double standards. Why don’t you do an article on all that, instead of just grabbing headlines during a time of catastrophe.

  13. Muslims insult me when they are or fear of their retribution is able to censor my reading material. Where can I go to get reparations for that offense? Just to make it clear I am really, really offended.

  14. I believe they can claim a religion of peace but not of freedom. You’ll live in peace as long as you conform.

  15. Just remember Islam is a religion of peace and love that never even suggests that people should be puNished for exercising their freedoms of speech! I wish some one would tell the Saudis and others that.
