Erdoğan: I Don’t Want To Be A Sultan . . . I Want To Be A Queen

220px-Recep_Tayyip_Erdogan200px-disneyqueenheartsTurkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had become a perpetual gaff machine. He would be funny if he were not so menacing in his effort to roll back on civil liberties and break down the secular traditions of Turkey in favor of Islamification of the government. He is facing growing criticism internationally and last week responded to allegations that he was trying to establish himself as a new Sultan. No, Erdoğan insisted, he really just wants to be more like Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II. As shown in other embarrassing moments recently, Erdoğan’s’s knowledge of history is even worst than his appreciation for human rights.

Recently, we discussed the arrest of Mehmet Emin Altunses, 16, who allegedly committed the crime of “insulting” Erdoğan. calling people who use birth control “traitors” and saying Muslims discovered America, you are not allowed to be disrespectful or insulting in discussing Erdoğan. The situation is even more dire for journalists who have found themselves threatened or arrested for reporting on Erdoğan or his cronies. Ye, as Turkish police arrested Dutch reporter Frederike Geerdink on terrorism charges, Erdoğan insisted that this is just one more “false” report from Western media since it is about terrorism not journalism. It is his statement about the record of Turkey on press freedoms that truly takes Erdoğan’s menacing comments into the realm of madness.

Erdoğan’s latest absurd statement came after he was confronted over his dismantling of democratic protections, push for a new constitution, and the reconstruction of something that looks a bit like a “Ottoman Sultan.” Oh no, Erdoğan, insisted, think of me as a Queen: “In my opinion, even the UK is a semi-presidency. And the dominant element is the Queen . . . I mean, why is it only a monarchy when an idea like this is floated in Turkey?” Well, because it is a monarchy Mr. President. Moreover, the Queen is no more dominant in the English system than the Ravens of the Tower of London. He also suggested that his system would look like the United States and no one is claiming that that is a monarchy.

It did not help that Erdoğan had just unveiled a grand new presidential palace on the outskirts of Ankara that was bigger than Buckingham Palace as well as the Kremlin and the White House.

Erdoğan seemed miffed that he was getting push back to creating a centralized power in the presidency and could not understand why — despite an array of critics explaining that he is viewed as a threat to basic liberties and the idea of centralizing his power is understandably unsettling. Yet, he seemed either clueless or willfully blind to those objections:

“One has to be able to use the powers invested in you by the national will in the best possible way. But at the moment, I am not able to do that,” he said. “At the moment, you have to ask permission of three different people for each decision, for each appointment. One is constantly being hindered. The judiciary puts obstacles in the way. One cannot run a country like that. For me, that is the biggest flaw of a parliamentary system.”

There may indeed be room for reforms of the Turkish system, but those reforms would include limitations not expansions on the abusive powers wielded by Erdogan and his Islamic allies in cracking down on journalists, activists, and religious minorities. Ironically, many would relish the idea of reducing Erdogan to a largely ceremonial (if not decorative) figure like the Queen of England. However, most expect that the Queen of Hearts is more in line with Erdogan’s royal aspirations.

  1. Oh, and don’t forget that if you cancel a plan at anytime, by not paying, you cannot get a new plan until open enrollment.

Isn’t it great when government interferes with the private market, mandating what we are allowed to get? This has been really awesome for consumer choice.

  2. Here is another goodie:

“Generally you can cancel a dental plan at anytime, by not paying, if it’s a stand-alone dental plan. If you have a plan that includes dental, you can switch it during open enrollment, but can’t drop the dental part of the plan without dropping the whole plan.”

I could cancel my entire insurance, but Blue Cross only offers the one ACA compliant plan. I’ve looked at other plans on the CA Exchange, and can’t find one without pediatric dental.

If one is out there, I would have to literally switch medical insurance carriers (and their networks) to find it.

    Obamacare is a scam.

No wonder Insurance Companies supported it.

  3. Here is another fabulous quote:

“Even with cost assistance, when you reach the maximum, you typically pay 100% of the costs for dental work. This is the opposite of health insurance under the ACA where you pay 0% after your maximum. So don’t be confused by that.”

The maximum is $700. So I have to pay $6,250 in deductibles to get $700 of benefit.

Hurrah!!! Thank you sooooooooooo much Obama for “helping” the middle class.

How did we ever survive all on our own before you?

Can you sell me any undercoating for my car, too?

Obama must think we are all complete morons and can’t add.

  4. Wade:

“All plans offered to children must include dental coverage as an essential benefit. This means if you’re getting coverage for someone 18 or younger, dental coverage must be available as part of a health plan or as a stand-alone plan. While it must be available to you, you don’t have to buy it.

Rejecting child dental coverage won’t result in your child not having minimum essential coverage, and you won’t pay the fee.”

You will notice that the ACA quote only says that all medical plans must include pediatric dental. My Obamacare plan does.

What it does NOT address is the deductible. Deductibles skyrocketed under Obamacare to add all those sick people and “free” benefits. My deductible went from $500 to $6250.

Since pediatric dental is now included in my medical, and not available as a separate account, it is subject to that hideous deductible.

No Obamacare policy in CA is offered without pediatric dental. In order to cancel my pediatric dental coverage, I have to cancel my entire medical insurance and pay a fine.

Here is a confusing quote from the ACA:

“Dental insurance, for the most part, isn’t covered under ObamaCare (the Affordable Care Act). However, children’s dental coverage is a required benefit included on all ACA compliant plans.”

    http://obamacarefacts.com/dental-insurance/dental-insurance/

Please note that pediatric dental must be included on all Obamacare policies.

You can try calling your carriers and asking them, but that has definitely been my experience.

If you can find some loophole for me to cancel this utterly worthless, government gift to insurance companies, please tell me.

I wonder how often they pay child dental benefits, if the child (not the family) has to incur $6,250 in deductibles first. Do only kids with catastrophic injuries get dental benefits???

Not all states are complicit with Medicaid and ACA such as MIssouri

This is not actually Obama’s fault but my question is – who is going to pay the premiums of dental and eyesight? You know as well as I do or you should that these insurance companies have been told to raise the cost by Sec. of State Kerry.

2015 Enrollment figures have been released for both state-run and federally-run Marketplaces and Exchanges in operation nationwide. In the first month of open enrollment, just over 4 million people (4,048,861) signed up for the first time or reenrolled in coverage for 2015. Jan 16 updates were released for the 37 federally-run state sites, showing 7.1 million people have made plan selections. About 87 percent of people who selected health insurance plans through HealthCare.gov for coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2015 were determined eligible for financial assistance to lower their monthly premiums, compared to 80 percent of enrollees who selected plans over a similar period last year. 6. Karen, this seems to contradict your assertion. Please provide a link to your info. The following is from the ACA website.

    Child Dental Coverage

All plans offered to children must include dental coverage as an essential benefit. This means if you’re getting coverage for someone 18 or younger, dental coverage must be available as part of a health plan or as a stand-alone plan. While it must be available to you, you don’t have to buy it.

  7. I don’t know if being an “Islamicphobe” is one who dislikes Islamics or one who hates them. I am of the later. But, I do not like any religion. But getting to the Queeny issue here. The Erdogan guy is probably “bent”. If you know what I mean jellybean.

  8. Speaking of rulers who want to be sultan, today I experienced yet another Obamacare “benefit.” Because this year small employers are required to provide pediatric dental insurance, the dental insurance was rolled into medical.

Which means that before they will pay benefits, I have to satisfy my $6,250 medical deductible.

I CANNOT shop around for separate pediatric dental insurance. I HAVE to buy this, bundled with my medical. I may not vote with my feet. I am prohibited from changing my medical insurance after open enrollment, unless I have a life status change, such as a birth or marriage.

No wonder insurance companies signed on for this. This is a total scam. They got new customers that are required by law to buy their product. They prevent them from voting with their feet except during short enrollment periods. They require them to buy pediatric dental insurance that is basically worthless because it won’t pay any benefits until the deductible is met. And they increased deductibles astronomically. In my case it was 1100%. And we won’t get into the lack of high quality providers.

Obamacare is one big scam, and anyone who claims it’s a benefit is seriously misguided.

What am awesome benefit! That really opens up dental care for kids. You have to pay $6,250 before they will pay for a cleaning and X-rays. Now THAT’S how a government improves quality.

This is in comparison with the market, where people don’t buy what they don’t want, and competition is good. So providers had better bring popular products to market or they’ll go under.

  9. Mr. Schulte

Indeed. I’ll take writing tips via email as well. Knowledge > Tradition.

  10. Mr. Schulte

You also seem to be strong with history as you always attempt to provide history lessons. I would appreciate more so I understand your perspective better. Email me @ndirish_8@yahoo.com. I don’t think the gotcha moments help me learn much.

  11. How dare a leader believing in Islam have a larger palace than the recent traditional powers of the US, UK and Russia! This blog has a heavy strand of Islamophobia.

  12. “One has to be able to use the powers invested in you by the national will in the best possible way. The judiciary puts obstacles in the way. One cannot run a country like that. For me, that is the biggest flaw of a parliamentary system.”

Although not as eloquent as Obama, he certainly shares the same concerns. Erdogan is also wrong about another thing:

“He also suggested that his system would look like the United States and no one is claiming that that is a monarchy.”

Um, closer than he thinks and there certainly are many making that claim.

  13. The Royal Family of GB are figureheads. I somehow doubt that Erdogan aspires to be a social ambassador, with Parliament the ruler.

  14. The Islamic culture, maybe more than any other, worships strength. As Islamic jihadists show strength and commitment, leaders like this guy are going w/ whom they perceive to be the victor. That’s why ISIS must be crushed. We need to stop appeasing leaders like this and fully arm the Kurds.

  15. Turkey is sliding down the slippery slope from civilized nation state to pirate territory. Fly over and flush.

  16. Erdogan has just been reading too much Thomas Friedman/NYT “One-party autocracy certainly has its drawbacks. But when it is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people, as China is today, it can also have great advantages.”

Like Obama and other US “progressives” in this regard, Erdogan laments the “dysfunction” of a messy representative democracy and wishes to make the system more “efficient” through consolidation of power in the executive.
