We have previously discussed violence and legal measures targeting dogs by some Muslims who view canines as “unclean.” Even postcards with dogs and service dogs (and here) have raised the ire of some Muslim groups. Now this issue is getting some long-needed attention in Iran after a short film that showed stray dogs being tortured and killed by having acid injected into them.
The video was taken an industrial area of Shiraz, 900 kilometres south of Tehran. The animal activists claimed that those responsible paid $4 for each dog. As with environmentalists in China, I have always had overwhelming respect and admiration for secularists and animal (particularly dog) advocates in Muslim countries. This is more than an impressive commitment to principle but putting your actual life on the line for those principles.
The good news is that the Iranian government is acting on the video. While there was an effort to criminalize the ownership of dogs under Sharia law (and subject dog owners to up to 74 lashed last year), Vice President Masoumeh Ebtekar has called for an investigation into the video. While she referred rather mildly to the practice as “an immediate end to unconventional population control method[] for stray dogs,” she did call upon the interior ministry to “deal with the criminals responsible”.
Some Iranian celebrities like Ali Karimi, once a star on Iran’s national football team, posted a picture with his two dogs on Instagram and the message “Dogs are the kindest domestic animals. I hope those who, under any excuse, did this to these animals get what they deserve.”

No cabbie will need CAIR, as Wade said, we have RFRA. Now anyone’s sincerely held belief is safe. So go ahead, discriminate against disabled people with dogs and gay couples seeking a wedding cake! Isn’t religious freedom grand?! Can’t have it both ways, either you get religious freedom for all or for none. No favorites.
Wonder why the legal scholars, who work for CAIR, are not schooling the cabbies with regard to their misinterpretation of Islamic law when they choose to deny rides to passengers with service animals? I thought that Mohammed promised heaven to a prostitute giving water to a thirsty dog. I thought that Mohammed turned his army around so as to not disturb a dog giving birth. Simple solution. Inform the cabbies. Problem solved. Instead, CAIR represents these cabbies, offering up a defense using Islam as the basis for their beliefs. Can’t have it both ways, folks. Can’t say Islam values and protects animals and at the same time claim that it condones the denial of passage for service dogs. Pick a side, any side.

When the Muslim cabbies refuse service to those with service dogs, often stranding helpless and handicapped individuals, it is inevitably CAIR that comes to the defense of those poor, victimized cabbies. Po, save some of your energy and vitriol for your gang at CAIR. Lecture them on the compassion and love that Islam bestows upon dogs. Ask them how dare they represent individuals who are so confused as to the gentle and loving perspective that Islam has regarding dogs.
I’m not holding my breath.
No doubt, Wade, I posted earlier the link showing that it was indeed feral dogs that the municipality was supposed to handle, though they deny being behind the killing.
But, as usual, the foaming at the mouth lot here rather just jump on the poisoned meat the professor threw into the arena…the metaphor with poisoning dogs is quite apt here, they don’t even see it.

And so far as I can ascertain, no one here knows how many dogs were killed, by how many people, under what circumstances. Karen ‘sees’ dogs ripped from their owner’s arms – in an industrial area. Is it possible the dogs were a pack of feral strays? Do Americans sometimes worry over packs of feral strays? Was the killer some sadistic teenager? It seems the authorities did object. I assume those authorities were Muslims. It also seems there are numerous Iranians who own and presumably love their dogs. I assume those Iranians are Muslims – many may be quite religious Muslims.
How do we explain it?
Left to this group, why bother explaining. They prefer to make up their own scary xenophobic stories.

Your Palestinian terrorists chose to hide behind the skirts of their women and children, lobbing rocket after rocket into Israel. Blame your Palestinian freedom fighters for the casualties, since they were the ones who chose to fire rockets from homes, hospitals and mosques, necessitating the destruction of those sites. If you must know, murderer was what I used not as the legal scholar I am but as someone who suspected someone else of having killed someone else else without grounds. In general parlance, we use murderer synonymously with killer.
