Iranian Dog Torture Video Sparks Outrage

blind_dog250px-flag_of_iransvgWe have previously discussed violence and legal measures targeting dogs by some Muslims who view canines as “unclean.” Even postcards with dogs and service dogs (and here) have raised the ire of some Muslim groups. Now this issue is getting some long-needed attention in Iran after a short film that showed stray dogs being tortured and killed by having acid injected into them.

The video was taken an industrial area of Shiraz, 900 kilometres south of Tehran. The animal activists claimed that those responsible paid $4 for each dog. As with environmentalists in China, I have always had overwhelming respect and admiration for secularists and animal (particularly dog) advocates in Muslim countries. This is more than an impressive commitment to principle but putting your actual life on the line for those principles.

The good news is that the Iranian government is acting on the video. While there was an effort to criminalize the ownership of dogs under Sharia law (and subject dog owners to up to 74 lashed last year), Vice President Masoumeh Ebtekar has called for an investigation into the video. While she referred rather mildly to the practice as “an immediate end to unconventional population control method[] for stray dogs,” she did call upon the interior ministry to “deal with the criminals responsible”.

Some Iranian celebrities like Ali Karimi, once a star on Iran’s national football team, posted a picture with his two dogs on Instagram and the message “Dogs are the kindest domestic animals. I hope those who, under any excuse, did this to these animals get what they deserve.”

  1. Humpindog … you’re nuts. I am a commenter here and have made it plain that my reaction to any threat to our horses or dogs would be fatal for whomever did it. Same for any dog I know and like. And that is almost all dogs Your post is not even “cute” it is pure BS. I don’t engage in this conversation much because what I think is out of place here and illegal to boot. I’d bet I’ve rescued more dogs in need than you even know. If you have a specific charge about my attitude, say it specifically…don’t be cute. Otherwise, shut up.

  2. BitchinDog here. Sorry but I now realize that the blog commenters do not give a rats arse about us dogs. Well, I was wrong over the past years thinking that you folks were well rounded. See ya later alligator, after while crocodile. Real soon baboon. Eat dic rattle snake. Nother blog real soon for me.

  3. Iranians torture dogs and spark outrage. Yeah? Where? Not on this blog.
If we had any Iranians in my neighborhood we dogs would be making their lives miserable. But, my comment is this: You folks on this blog dont really care about dogs and what the friggin Iranians did and do to them. Bye bye Miss American pie.

  4. Beldar here. I am from France. (no Planet Remulak). I have a conehead. My comment here is that dogs are being dissed by some of the commenters. Too bad, so sad, your dad. One would think that dog would have been given some high fives and what not. I am sending the whole blog comments back to Remulak for review. If I was a dog I would refrain from living in AmeriKa.
You folks are very, very, anti dog.

  5. @ Aridog

Screenshot. Take a screenshot and post it as a hyperlink or jpeg file.

  6. Ingannie….strange indeed, since it has been ostensibly put up by three very different commenters….and not exactly on topic. Be weird if someone (unknown here) is attaching it to comments by various commenters. Next time I see it I will try to copy and paste it to a subsequent comment.

  7. Respect dogs. Nah, not on this blog. This dog is looking for another blog. The humans here have shown disrespect.

  8. Ingannie…you have to be quick, as they usually disappear in short order. They’re gone on this thread now too. Three times now. I rather doubt I am having a delusion 3 times in a row. A substantial part of the “feed” are comments I make on “Anne’s Opinions” that is owned and operated by a good friend in Israel. Beats me why it gets put up and I’m not distressed that it gets taken down…as I said, this is not MY blog. If anyone, authoritatively connected to this blog, can explain the deletions, fine, but either way I am not offended.

That said, I plan to ask “Anne” of “anneinpt” , by phone or email, if she is aware of it and knows anything about how they appear. Anne knows me very well. It really is no big deal…just amusing that they appear and then vanish. 🙂

  9. One more thing (stolen from the Fox News Channels “The Five”)…don’t bother trying to make me into a “phobe” of any kind…anyone who does that makes a fool of themselves, not me. I see a different face, a different color, a different ethnicity, different language or accent, et al…my first impulse is to be curious and learn something from them I don’t know. And I always do learn somethings new. My sole “phobia” concerns those who accuse me of it. Yeah, it’s those folks I am biased against…and suspect they’ve not walked the same road I have over time. It’s not just me, but a few others who have been there done that too…one of the best doesn’t post here, but elsewhere, but I wish he would do so here. However, I am not the boss of him.

  10. For days now Aridog, you’ve been talking about some “link/feed” that is being deleted. WTH are you talking about? I’ve never seen any link/ feed being posted on these threads. Could Darren or JT please explain what these “link/feeds” are that Aridog is continuously talking about?

  11. Beyond all that, every time I try walking on water I wind up treading that water and gasping for breath…so I try to be careful not to play G-d. When I sound like I am, call me on it….just don’t whine about how one is oppressed by the thoughts of one weird guy in Detroit.

  12. Uhmmm…just to be clear, or more clear so to speak…I am me and I don’t say anything here or elsewhere that that I do not “own” per se. I use no sock puppets and say what I think. Sorry if that bothers some, but I’ll stand by my remarks…and I will apologize when I’m wrong. It happens.

  13. Whoopsie…now Max-1 has posted that link feed that details my remarks elsewhere. Let’s see how long it lasts this time…two previous posts of the same link/feed have been deleted. Will Max-1’s make it past the moderation? If it does, what does that infer?

As I’ve said before, I am not offended by the link/feed summary postings…and I don’t understand why it gets whacked. I also don’t care why it gets whacked when it does…this is NOT my blog and I am not the honcho of it. So be it 🙂

  14. Po: “What is the point of this post? What exactly is it saying? Is it about Iran? About dogs? About dog torture? About acid? Oh, yes, click bait! Has the prof addressed this yet” (link to some other non-related news story)

    Really Po?

You know I’m not an Islamophobe. So I have to ask why are you feigning ignorance here if not to deny the realities of what Turley’s discussing?

    How’s this for a tangent?

You did a similar dance when I asked you about the problem of bearing false witness regarding Darren Wilson.

You remember Darren Wilson; don’t you Po? The man you were convinced was a racist murderer and was being protected by a corrupt justice system?

Po: “What I don’t get, Bob, is why when the evidence is conclusive neither way, would you side so forcefully for the murderer while blaming the other side for doing what you and others doing?”

Unlike you, I wasn’t forcing a false narrative. In your zeal to make the Brown shooting a story about how cops are gunning down unarmed black kids, you intentionally disregarded the fact that our system of criminal justice is predicated upon the fact that a person is innocent until proven guilty. In your eyes, Wilson had to be indicted because your narrative, as well as the mob pushing it, demanded as much. This is why you had no interest in analyzing Johnson’s statements to the media, much less his grand jury testimony—you didn’t want to acknowledge that he was a liar.

How many of the witnesses that had you convinced Wilson murdered Brown did the DOJ deem credible enough to stand before a grand jury and inculpate Wilson?

    The answer is ZERO.

Not single witness would have been credible enough to put before any grand jury. Which means there shouldn’t have even been a county grand jury but for the liars on the streets of Ferguson. And when the County grand jury returned no indictment, you blamed it all on McCulloch because you couldn’t accept the possibility that you were wrong.

Tailoring facts and ignoring applicable principles so as to promote a particular narrative is nothing less than bearing false witness.

  15. Max: “However, reviewing your comment about high horses, it appeared to be genuine.”

It was a play off a quote from Obama excusing Islamic murders.
