Steinem: Young Women Supporting Sanders Are Just Looking For Men

220px-Wheretheboysare220px-G_steinem_2011We have previously discussed the bizarre treatment of young women who have turned to Bernie Sanders with other young people in unprecedented numbers. Democratic and feminist leaders have increasingly treated those women as ignorant, naive or disloyal. However the most shocking and sexist statement came from feminist icon Gloria Steinem who told Bill Maher on Friday night that young women are simply looking for boys and the “boys are with Bernie.” In the meantime, with Hillary Clinton next to her, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said that women supporting Sanders should go to hell. Why? These are women who are refusing to be sexist and simply support Clinton because she is a women. Isn’t that what the gender revolution was about? Many young women have been polled and say that they view Clinton as dishonest and the very personification of the establishment. One can certainly contest those views but the idea that women should be damned or dismissed for not supporting a woman should seem . . . well . . . sexist. Moreover, I fail to see how any of this is helping change any minds among young women.

Steinem triggered a firestorm when, after being asked about the heavy lead of Sanders among younger women, said “When you’re young, you’re thinking, ‘Where are the boys?’ The boys are with Bernie.”  This is like repeating the long-standing insult that women just go to college for husbands.  Even as a joke, it would be tasteless but, in this context, reflects the growing divide between older feminists and women between 18 and 30.

220px-AlbrightmadeleineNot to be outdone Albright continued with, “just remember: there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.” Really? Does that mean supporting Carly Fiorina or someone like Sarah Palin? What is fascinating is that these young women are looking beyond gender and they are critical of what they see in Clinton on the issues, including issues not directly linked or beneficial to them. Clinton responded to these comments by laughing in appreciation.

There seems to be a rising level of guilt treatment or open contempt by older feminists for young women in failing to fall blindly into line behind Clinton. Younger women have proven far more skeptical including in response to Clinton’s statement that she cannot be considered the “establishment” in the race because she is a woman. The campaign is clearly pushing this line to press young women but it seems remarkably heavy handed and insulting to me.  There are legitimate reasons to oppose (and legitimate reasons to support) Hillary, who has insisted that she is running not as the best woman but the best leader.  Many (not all) younger woman has found Sanders more compelling as a leader. Yet, they are facing these insulting from older women for coming to what they view as the wrong decision in not supporting a woman.

What do you think?

  1. PCS,

The editor of the Harvard Law Review did not know that every previous President was a “natural born citizen” with two parents who were citizens at the time of his birth and that he was not eligible for the office because he was not a “natural born citizen” “…born in the country of parents who are citizens,..?”

    I’m dumbstruck!

Perhaps the editor of the Harvard Law Review knew and decided then that he was going to engage in “overreach” to nullify the Constitution in order to “fundamentally transform” America.

That smacks of malicious aforethought. And treason.

    1. John – the former editor of the Harvard Law Review did not do well enough in class to get on the Review on merit. There is some legal talk that the Supreme Court is going to teach him what the extent of his Presidential powers are this term.

  2. And I supported Obama over Hillary in 2008 NOT because he was black or a man but because he was a visionary and without Hillary’s apparent Republican-spewing baggage. There is no comparison between Obama and the “equally inexperienced” first term senator Rubio who can’t think on his feet without benefit of a memorized response. Obama is brilliant. He was the editor of Harvard Law Review. It was obvious that despite a dearth of experience, he had the “natural resources” to handle any challenge that came his way. Ted Cruz is equally brilliant but like the grinch he has a stone where his heart used to be. No visionary he.

    1. Joan Spiegel – do you know how Obama got to be editor of the Harvard Law Review? It used to be only the top students were selected for the review, however by the time Obama was there, there were two paths. You could selected by the faculty (top students), which he wasn’t). You could be selected by your fellow law students (which he was). The editor of the Harvard Law review was selected by a vote of the students selected by both groups. The year Obama got elected, the closed meeting took eight hours before he was successfully elected.

  3. I am a 66 year old feminist and a Bernie Sanders supporter. I call out both Steinem and Albright for their sexist and demeaning comments. Shame on both of you! Had Elizabeth Warren been a candidate this year, I would have been behind her 100% with Bernie as a second choice. Heck, if EW were in the race, I doubt Bernie would have thrown his hat in the ring. If Hilarie wins the Democratic nomination, I will actively support her. Not a single Republican candidate comes any where near the two Democrats in intelligence, rationality or experience. Watching the debates on Thursday and again last night couldn’t have made the contrast any clearer.

  4. I think there is some truth to what Gloria Steinem said. Just look at all the misogyny on this blog. People admit voting for Obama solely because he is black, despite an obvious lack of experience, radical political ties, and a shady land deal with convicted felon Tony Rezko that allowed O. to score a Chicago mansion that he couldn’t afford, and of which the Wall Street Journal said violated Senate ethics rules. Obama’s ethical issues weren’t a problem, but when it comes to Hillary, OMG, we suddenly just can’t abide an unethical politician!! Double standard, anyone? And look at all the hate – Hillary is old (of course, Bernie being old isn’t a problem); she’s a lesbian (but the wimpy Obama hasn’t been accused of being gay). So yes, I think the women who voted for Obama over Hillary, and the women who are supporting Bernie over Hillary have some real issues with contempt for themselves and other women. As far as the men, well c’mon. I’m sure JT voted for Obama to pat himself on the back for being a liberal. But then he posts column after column against Hillary, during which time he has chosen to represent a polygamist. His views towards women can’t get much more transparent than that….

    1. Tin – can you honestly look at Michele Obama and not wonder if Barack is gay? 😉

  5. Oh well, take heart HIllary, as the flames of sin (according to Albright and Steinem) lick at your feet in NH for not supporting a woman, you’ll be absolutely safe in assuming that Debbie Wasserman Schultz is going to be keeping you company in that special place you’ll be calling my eternal home…

  6. Bernie Sanders attracts the young because the young want “free stuff”. They are still getting all or most of their taxes refunded, so they’ve never felt the pain. They don’t have the life experience to know nothing in life is free. Inexplicably, while they seek independence from their parents, they have “failure to launch” from government. They don’t want to be told what to do or how to live, but for some reason, a benevolent government taking care of you from cradle to grave sounds like utopia. These are also the PC warriors.

The irony of a feminist claiming that young women cannot make their own decisions and mistakes, and must be simply drifting where the boys tell them to go is a cheerful way to start a Sunday. Kind of like a communications professor trying to get a journalist thrown out of a public protest, or a women’s studies professor assaulting two young women for having outspoken opinions with which she disagrees. It’s like everyone’s performing in a Monty Python skit.

  7. This is serious! Terrible! Poor Hillary, she’s damned to rot in hell forever. In 2014 Zephyr Teachout ran for the Democratic Party nomination for Governor of New York. Zephyr, besides being an American academic and activist, is also a young female. Some of you may guess where this is going? Hillary of course supported her? OMG, No, no, Nooooooooooo, the grip of Mephistopheles is on her; HIllary supported Andrew Cuomo instead!

  8. I made this point before wrt the post on older comedians complaining about not drawing on college campuses: young people as a group are simply not interested in identity politics and view those who practice it as hopelessly addled and out of touch.

And you know something? They’re right.

  9. Equality stops at the middle. These old battle axes are way past the middle. Given their ages they are either suffering from the trials and tribulations of aging, are desirous of the limelight one more time, or probably both.

If you look at the American political process only someone who has accomplished some things gets to be a candidate but to go on from there that person has to get the attention of the people. Typically it is done by being outlandish, saying outlandish things, and generally making a noise that is well beyond the rational, moderate, area that benefits all.

Look at the Republicans. They have done nothing but exaggerate and lie to garner attention for the past 7+years. The proof of that fact can be seen in every GOP debate, no substance, just lies and exaggerations pointing the finger at Obama, Clinton, and each other.

Gloria is a smart girl. She accomplished much. Unfortunately her legacy will be tarnished by this obvious perversion of something which is of importance, gender equality. Shame on her, or sad.

  10. bam bam – I think the problem is that no one has been in either of their special places in hell, hence the venom against young women. The old get easily upset with the young, unless you have spent a long time working with them.

Soooooooo – Bernie has both the boys and the girls. Hillary is sweating bullets.

  11. Gloria believes, has always believed, that “a woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle.” That said, what has changed in the quarter century or more since it was uttered? Have women in her opinion regressed so much to the point where they now require the company of men to have fulfilling lives? This I cannot believe!

  12. The statements from Steinem and Albright make me so angry, disappointed and frustrated. I am not a “young” woman so perhaps my opinion doesn’t count on this issue, but personally, I do not want to vote for Hilary because she is a liar who will publicly say one thing and secretly do another — whatever it takes to further her political career and whomever is lining her pockets. Clinton says she is not part of the establishment — I laughed out loud at that one. The fact that I do not support her for president has nothing to do with me wanting attention from anyone, let alone boys or men, and I believe the same goes for for most young women who do not support Hilary for president. (Although perhaps Steinem in her statement is referring to third wave feminists, who do tend to be younger; some second- and fourth-wave feminists believe third-wave ideas kowtow to men rather than furthering what is best for women).

As much as I would love to see a woman elected president, Hilary is not trustworthy enough to get elected, IMHO. Supporting Sanders has nothing to do with his female supporters wanting attention from men or boys. In fact, I was reading a reddit sub with young lesbians who support Sanders chiming in with lots of laughing and funny comments regarding wanting attention from boys.

Steinem and Albright, bring me an upstanding female candidate and I will vote for her. Hilary ain’t it.

  13. There is a new group out in LA who support Bernie. They call their group LMs4BerKnee. Or Lesbian Millennials For Bernie Sanders.

  14. When millennials need to Google the name of the person lecturing them about how offensive their support for Sanders is, then you have no connection with that base. And if Clinton really wanted to lure young women to her campaign she might want to avoid the aged lesbian look. It might rock ‘her’ world but it won’t have the appeal to millennials.

  15. The apocryphal statement sometimes attributed to Roosevelt regarding the Nicaraguan dictator Somoza was “he may be a son of a bitch, but he’s our son of a bitch,” is applicable here. Mrs Clinton may be a sold-out, washed up political hack with incredibly bad judgement, but she’s our…etc.

This notion that it’s “time” for a woman to be president is correct, but it should be Elizabeth Warren, not Hillary Clinton. And certainly not any of the loons from the other party, namely professional grifter Palin or compulsive liar Fiorina. I get the desperation of Steinem and Albright wanting to see a woman president in their lifetime, but Clinton has made too many errors in judgement in her career, all vast right wing conspiracy hits aside.

  16. Where The Boys Are. That was a movie. Gloria is thinking of days of old when Knights were bold and rubbers weren’t invented. She tied a sock …..

  17. I looked up Gloria on wkipedia. She was born n 1934. That makes her age to be 82 or so. Senility is in the eye of the beholder. Not Eric Holder.

  18. How old is Gloria? How old is Hillary? Close in time, serves nine. When women get old, all they can get are old men and old men like young women so the old women who get any men are few and far between. So they start complaining and many resent younger women. This may sound like sexist dialog but the old ladies complaining is a monologue. So vote for Bernie and hope for a good journey.

  19. Bernie romanticizes Scandinavian socialism.

#1 The Scandinavian countries are TINY compared to us
#2. They have homogeneous populations, although with the immigration onslaught that is changing.
#3. They have relatively CORRUPTION FREE governments.

There are many other differences I’m sure but of this list I’d say #3 is the biggest difference between them and us.

How The Super-Rich Avoid Paying Taxes
    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-02-15/how-super-rich-avoid-paying-taxes

Is Bernie REALLY going to be able to stop these people from finding loopholes? Furthermore some of them don’t even care if they get caught because the money they save in taxes is worth it. Kind of like how mega pharmaceutical companies fabricate research results and commit innumerable crimes, get busted and pay out billions in settlements. When you’re making 300 billion in profits, what’s a few billion? Collateral damage.
