Court: It’s An Easter Cake. Really.

Woman wins lawsuit against Orthodox believers for their obsession about genitals. 61959.jpeg

We have been discussing the accumulation of power by the Russian Orthodox Church under Vladimir Putin, including crackdowns on free speech.  The latest victim is Irina Kudinova, who was charged with mocking the Church with the photograph above. Russian prosecutors charged her after she simply posted the above picture which was curiously portrayed as phallic and  indecent.  They alleged that this posted picture involved the “deliberate desecration of a religious object”  and “insulting the feelings of believers.”  A judge has ruled that it is merely an Easter cake and nothing more.

West Virginia Woman Dragged From Legislative Hearing On Drilling Bill After Listing Oil and Gas Donations To The Members

lissaWe recently saw a national outcry over a teacher dragged from a school board meeting for raising concerns over school policies.  Now, the West Virginia House of Delegates is under scrutiny for the treatment of a woman, Lissa Lucas, who appeared at a hearing over a drilling bill and attempted to list the contributions accepted by both Democrats and Republicans from the gas and oil industries.  She also raised an event the night before where the members wined and dined with industry lobbyists.  She was forciably removed from the hearing after Chairman, John Shott (R-Mercer) ruled her comments as non-germane and personal. Many voters would likely disagree and say that the extent of corporate-related money is not relevant to the legislation.

Academia’s #MeToo Movement Expands From Cincinnati to Shanghai As Congress Considers Legislation Targeting Academic Institutions

truth2Recently, the Utah Law Review published a study of sexual harassment at universities and there are a growing number of cases involving students coming forward with accounts of prior misconduct by professors.  Notably, this movement has even extended to China, which is not known for its enforcement of sexual harassment laws.  In the meantime, Congress is considering legislation entitled “Federal Funding Accountability for Sexual Harassers Act” that would make it more difficult for academics to avoid responsibility by moving to other universities.  [For full disclosure, one of the cases this month concerns a former GW colleague, Ezra Wasserman Mitchell, who changed his name from Larry Mitchell before leaving for China.]

In The Case Of The FISA Memos, Transparency Is National Security

downloadBelow is my column on the ongoing controversy over the majority and minority memos from the House Intelligence Committee. President Donald Trump has sent the Democratic memo — which is much longer and detailed — back to the Committee for revisions. He accused of the Democrats of intentionally loading up the memos with classified information to argue that the White House was withholding embarrassing information.  This column below argues for disclosure of not just as much of these memos as possible but underlying material.

Princeton Professor Asks If The N-Word Can Be Protected Speech . . . Students Walk Out and Protest To University

220px-Princeton_shield.svgPrinceton Professor Lawrence Rosen is facing protests after various students accused him racist language in a recent class.  What is different about this controversy is that the class was on racist language and oppressive symbolism. In an effort to discuss the limits of free speech, Rosen used the n-word and asked if it is protected speech.  Some students answered that question by walking out and protesting to the university.  It is concerning that even a discussion of this word in a relevant class is now viewed as worthy of discipline by some faculty and students.  This controversy is occurring after more schools have banned Huckleberry Finn due to the use of the n-word.

NASA Continues To Rack Up “Firsts,” Including “Heat Shield Rock” Found On Mars

As many of you know, I love the NASA site and all things associated with space exploration.  In that vein, I had to share this photo of the first meteorite found on another planet.  I could come up with a better name than “Heat Shield Rock” (like Rocky McRock Face or something) but those NASA people are a bit literal.  There is a stark beauty of such objects, hardened and shaped by billions of years. I also still get a thrill of being able to see these pictures from another world.  While this picture was taken in 2015, there are some new pictures that are truly record breaking in terms of distance below.  These images should remind the public of the tremendous breakthroughs being made by NASA and its partners with limited funding, including significant cuts.  Indeed, as Trump pushes to make the International Space Station a private or corporate effort, we need to keep in mind the windfall of new information that has come with each of these programs.

Chicagoans Need Not Apply: Brewers Move To Block Cubs Fans In Early Ticket Sales

100px-Chicago_Cubs_Logo_svg349px-Milwaukee_Brewers_Logo.svgThere could be a ticket war starting after the Milwaukee Brewers moved to reduce the number of Cubs fans at Miller Park. In recent years, the park has sounded like Wrigley with large numbers of people driving the two hours to Milwaukee.  Not only do Cubs fans want to cheer for their team but the tickets are generally cheaper.  However, that could be a thing of the past after the team opened early tickets to Wisconsin residents only.  Of course, entrepreneurial Brewers fans could easily circumvent the plans and resell the tickets to Cubbie fans.  The question is whether this will spark a ticket war.   As the person responsible for the Cubs winning the World Series, I protest.

Second Trump Staffer Resigns In A Week After Spousal Abuse Allegations As Trump Decries “Shattered Lives” [Updated]

article-abuse-0209A second White House official has resigned following a media investigation into allegations of domestic violence.  As discussed yesterday the disconnect between Rod Porter claiming that the allegations were false but his subsequent failure to seek a legal remedy or even threaten a defamation action.  David Sorensen, a speechwriter for President Trump, has raised a possible defamation action against his wife in denying the accusations. Indeed, he alleges that she was the abuser — creating a possibility of libel actions on both sides (much like the Roy Moore situation).  President Donald Trump has responded to the two cases by decrying the impact of “mere allegations” in “shattering lives.”

Southern New Hampshire Professor Flunks Student For Saying That Australia Is A Country [Updated]

unnamedSouthern New Hampshire University is one of the burgeoning online universities that promises faster and cheaper degrees than the traditional colleges.  While there are considerable questions raised over content of these courses and the value of the degrees, SNHU insists that it is reaching a population that would not otherwise be able to attain degrees.  Ashley Arnold, 27, however, had to educate her professor that Australia is not just a continent but also a country.  Update: SNHU has fired the professor.  This type of story is particularly harmful for online universities given their perception as diploma mills.

Defamation or Damage Control? Trump Praises Rod Porter While Porter Claims Innocence

Rob Porter's ex-wife Colbie Holderness is pictured in a photo from 2005, when she says Porter gave her a black eye on an Italy trip.It is like a broken record in politics. A powerful man is accused of a despicable and criminal act toward women.  He emphatically denies the allegation and then . . . crickets.  President Donald Trump cited Rod Porter’s claim of innocence and praised him and is now facing criticism over his failure to express concern for the women in the scandal.

In the meantime, Porter has not done the obvious thing if his two prior wives are indeed lying about his being a vile abuser of women . . . he has not threatened, let alone promised, a defamation action.

“I Love This Sh*t”: Tennessee Sheriff Boasts On Tape After Ordering Deputies To Shoot Driver In Car Chase

download-8A Tennessee widow is suing White County Sheriff Oddie Shoupe after the disclosure of a body camera recording in which Shoupe ordered the shooting of her husband so not to “tear up” the cars of his deputies.  Michael Dial was unarmed and moving at only around 50 miles an hour in his truck (which was pulling a trailer).  Shoupe’s orders and comments on the tape are highly disturbing.

“It’s Not Going To Be OK”: Omarosa Dishes On Trump On Reality Show [Updated]

Screen Shot 2018-02-08 at 8.32.29 PMPresident Donald Trump’s successful career on reality television has been much discussed during his presidency.  The controversial inclusion of Omarosa Manigault Newman on his staff was a reminder of that history.  Newman was fired on The Apprentice but later became a supporter of Trump for president. She was then made the director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison. Her rocky tenure in the White House came to an end when she was fired. She immediately went on the air to heavily imply that she had damaging information on the Administration.  Now she is back on reality television and dishing on how the Trump White House was a nightmare. As an example, Omarosa has declared, when asked if she would vote again for Trump, “God no. Never. Not in a million years, never.”
