“Trying to Have His Cake and Eat it, Too”: Rep. Clyburn Latest To Get Dinged For Voter ID Claims

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., received the ignoble distinction of four Pinocchios for his claim that Democrats have never opposed voter ID laws. A couple weeks ago, various Democratic leaders pivoted on their long objections to voter ID laws as the “new Jim Crow” laws, including Stacey Abrams. The Post’s Glenn Kessler wrote “On the face of it, it seems absurd. After all, Clyburn has long been a foe of voter ID laws passed in his own state.”

In an interview with Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto on Tuesday, Clyburn was confronted about the flip flop when he announced support for Sen. Joe Manchin’s, D-W.Va., proposed voter ID requirement in a national election bill. Polls show voters overwhelmingly support voter ID.

Clyburn responded:

“I don’t know why you guys keep misrepresenting what I said. I have never said that you should not have voter ID. When I got my voter registration cards, I keep them in my wallet. And when I go to vote, I presented that every time. And I said to them, I am Jim Clyburn, this is my ID, and I want to vote. I have always had voter ID. And that’s why the representative earlier who voted … no Democrat has never been against voter ID.”

Kessler however said that Clyburn spoke out against South Carolina’s 2013 photo ID law under which a voter can use a driver’s license or obtain a voter registration card with a photo for free. It also allows South Carolinians to cast provisional ballots without a photo ID by signing an affidavit explaining why they were unable to get an identification card. Clyburn denounced the law and said that such ID laws were “poll taxes.”

He has repeatedly called such laws as designed to suppress the vote of black voters.

Kessler awarded four Pinocchios and added:

“Clyburn is trying to have his cake and eat it, too. He routinely decries ‘voter ID’ laws, but at the same time he insisted on Fox News that he has never opposed such laws — and that every Democrat has supported them. In reality, he appears to be against many types of voter ID laws — ones that require photos, or a fee for a photo or which favor one voting group over another.

In other words, he’s playing word games. He supposedly is for voter identification but against most of the voter ID laws being adopted by states … You cannot claim one day that voter ID is a new kind of poll tax and then, on another day, say every Democrat is for voter ID.”

Clyburn is not alone in this distinction. President Biden has also accumulated a collection of Pinocchios, including for his false statements about the Georgia voting law.

Such contradictions would not ordinarily draw much attention except that the statements were made to support claims that these laws are voter suppression vehicles or, as Biden has claimed, “Jim Crow on steroids.”

  1. It takes the polling of the public for the Democrats to figure out that their policies are not popular. What’s amazing is that they would somehow think that the people would agree with their ideas. First it was defund the police that turned into replace the police with social workers. The social workers would ask the gangbangers in Chicago to pretty please act nice. What a crock. Next they tell us that the COVID lab release was a debunked lie and when the truth comes out Biden says well maybe it did come from the lab. His standard response is let’s form a commission. If you can’t take the pulse of the nation before you go into wacko land why should we cast our votes for the likes of you. Of course, in Clyburn’s district you could run an old shoe with Democrat stamped in the leather and it would soon be sitting at a desk in the Capitol.

  2. In modern religion (i.e. moral, its relativistic sibling ethical, its politically congruent cousin legal philosophy): abort the baby, cannibalize her profitable parts, sequester her carbon pollutants, and have her, too. Deny a woman and man’s dignity and agency, and reduce human life to a property. Yes, past, present, and progressive.

  3. Listening to Biden attack voter ID laws this week, I guess the charade is over and they have gone back to spreading racial animosity and fear.

  4. “[We gave you] a republic, if you can keep it.”

    ___________

Franklin’s was a restricted-vote republic, distinctly not a one man, one vote democracy.

Turnout in 1788 was 11.6% by design.

Democracy was conducted by restricted vote in Greece at its inception.

Democracy was conducted by restricted vote in Rome.

The vote is moot, in large part, as the “manifest tenor” of the U.S. Constitution holds dominion in America.

The Constitution provides maximal freedom to individuals while severely limiting and restricting government.

Ever increasing numbers of votes are crucial to those whose goal is to abuse democracy and nullify the Constitution in order to gain wholly unconstiutitonal benefits and entitlements.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the people discover they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the canidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy–to be followed by a dictatorship.”

  5. So this is the play. Just lie and blame the other side.

Democrats have openly supported defunding the police. Now they lie and claim it’s Republicans who want to defund police. It takes a lot of gall to even make such a statement.

Democrats said that telling people don’t come, don’t immigrate here illegally was xenophobic. Faced with the resulting influx of over a million illegal immigrants in less than a year, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris now say “Don’t come”. Guess it’s suddenly not xenophobic.

Democrats are on record claiming that any requirement to prove your identity to vote is racist. The law in question required a drivers license, free voter ID, a utility bill, the last 4 of the SSN, or even a written statement that they don’t have a SSN. Now they claim they never opposed voter ID. Guess they finally read the polls where 81% of minority voters support voter ID.

Well, I guess their success with this method will rely on, as Gruber put it, “the stupidity” of their voters.

You’d have to be inexpressibly gullible to believe this.

    1. Karen: you don’t even know what “defunding the police means”. It means considering diverting money away from more guns, more police cars and bullets into social workers dealing with things like drug overdoses and domestic violence. Republicans ARE in favor of “defunding” one source of police: the IRS. Trump drastically cut down the staff to review and investigate tax returns and to prosecute tax cheats.

Democrats never said telling brown people not to come here was xenophobic: what they did say was calling brown people “murderers, rapists, breeders and animals” and caging even young children to serve as a deterrent was xenophobic, which it is. Democrats have never encouraged illegal immigration.

No Democrat ever said that it is racist to produce voter ID. In fact, you have to have ID to register to vote. What they have opposed is the refusal of Republicans to accept certain forms of ID, like student IDs to vote, and to demand certain types of voter ID, but only for black people. After Republicans figured out that if it is easier for people to vote, including black people, they started taking measures to make it more difficult. In his book, “Landslide”, Wolff writes that Trump called allowing mail-in and absentee voting, which would benefit minorities more than white people, “stealing HIS votes”.

Now, you’re trying to claim that Demcrats are the gullible ones. Wow!

      1. My position has always been the same. Free or very low cost official state ID for anyone who needs one. Transportation to and from the polls for those with a need. That being said all voting on one day, in person except for a very narrow exception for those whose work precludes showing up, such as medical workers, 1st responders, and active duty military, as well as those who are able to demonstrate some disability that would make it difficult to leave their home. No one else has any excuse to not take an hour or two of their time once every 2 or 4 years.

  6. I don’t know, Turley, how it can be the case that you have no capacity to comprehend hypocrisy? You actually wrote a piece attacking Democrats for mendacity. How much Republican lying have you failed to even acknowledge, much less comment about? What about the Big Lie? How can you even have the gall to comment about Rep. Clyburn making what your Fox colleagues claim is flip flopping or lying, when you don’t even address the Big Lie? What about all of the misinformation your employer is putting out to cause the faithful Trumpsters to fear and refuse vaccination?

Let’s talk about the long-term consequences of lying. So, now Rep. Clyburn says he doesn’t oppose reasonable voter ID. What’s the harm done by an allegedly contrary position? None, except to attack Rep. Clyburn and attempt to take a victory lap for your employer, but also to try to lend credibility for the lies they deal in. Now, let’s talk about vaccination misinformation and fearmongering. There are people in the Deep South who are getting sick and dying of COVID right now, today, including small children, because of the vaccination misinformation campaign, aided and abetted by your employer. Turley: name some physician group that opposes COVID vaccination–i.e., The American Medical Association, The American Academy of Pediatrics, The American Nurses Association, The American Association of Nurse Practitioners, or any state medical society or any specialty medical society. Can you name one? No, you can’t. So, where is the fearmongering coming from, and what is the basis? You can’t cite any valid medical authority that supports the fearmongering over vaccination. What is the practical results of the lying and fearmongering? People are getting sick and dying. Unnecessarily. But, hey, you got in a dig at Rep. Clyburn, so your paycheck will be arriving soon.

  7. There are two truisms about the Democratic party that are undeniable:
    1. If they claim to be for something, dig deeper and it will always be something that will give them more power.
    2. If they go on the attack, dig deeper and it will always be something they are actually doing.

Racism, and system racism are fundamental characteristics of the Democratic party. They were born out of it. They went to war to continue it. When that failed, they used the law and courts to systematize discriminatory practices. Democrats birthed their civilian enforcement arm with the Ku Klux Klan. They nearly succeeded in filibustering “again”, the 1964 Civil Rights Act but Sen. Dirksen withstood the Democrats 57 day filibuster to get the law passed. With the Jim Crow “systems” failure, the Democrats next systematic move against blacks was The Great Society and their so called war on poverty. They put social welfare programs in place that have had the net effect of destroying families and creating welfare dependency. With that dependency came a reliable constituency for Democrat votes. Fast forward to 2021 and Democrats are fighting to retain their dependents. Ironically, the KKK has been replaced by BLM.

If you really want to see what systemic racism looks like, take stock of who is running every major city that has substandard education, violence, arson, assault, murder. How long have they been in power? That’s systemic and that is the Democratic party.

  8. Not only do I agree with voter ID laws I agree with separate voting between State issues and candidates AND Federal issues and candidates. The States have proved they are incapable and unworthy of operating voting at the federal level and that includes the Judges. The idiotic rulings that throw out valid complaints on voting irregularities and frauds using the excuse it wouldn’t change the outcome should have ended with the Judges being giving the boot. The amount of change has nothing to do with the crimes committed and serve only to encourage and increase in the crime itself. How does that not make the judges using that excuses NOT part of the crime at this point before, during and especially after.

The States operating the federal level voting concerns two and two only candidates and that can be easily handled by fraud proof voter identification cards.

Separation also puts selection of State Delegates aka Senators and Representatives from the strange notion they should be automatically protection from such state, local and citizen level control of their delegates using initiative and recall. I see no reason at all why these State Delegates should be granted immunity as if they were some kind of royalty.

Furthermore the addition of protection of whole or real citizens from the likes of George Soros interfering in any precinct, district, city, county, or state based solely on wealth or a very long pinnochio-itis affliction into areas other than their own precinct, city, county and state excepting the federal election.

Freedom to support is automatic by the geopolitical level involved. It should not grant some kind of super voting status based strictly on money.

As for State IDs in voting Florida already proved it can be done to their statisfaction. Not to mention operation of their voting systems is a Constitutional guarantee.

Final comment. When the States destroy ballots that contain federal level issues they are commiting a felony concerning destruction of federal documents. If that is found to be true then the State has NO protection from having their entire ‘claimed’ ballots rejected. And that is where the major felony is being committed. Destruction of evidence exists and replacement with a computer printout does not negate that fact.

    1. Q: “ARE WE BETTER OFF?? Yeah, let’s leave it to the government to solve (actually TBTF US Banks NEVER EVER RESOLVED!). The illegal foreclosure debacle of 2008 and its federal civil rights violations namely the Civil Forfeiture of property w/o due process is merely a harbinger of the events NOW occurring to come.

  9. “You can’t eat your cake and have it, too,” is the proper, traditional saying, as Ted Kaczynski reminded us in his manifesto. Ted’s fierce accuracy was his undoing. It led to a search warrant and his capture, per the FBI. Ted had used the same construction writing to his brother.

  10. It seems like a lot of white liberals have the racist belief that blacks are disproportionately incapable of procuring an ID card.

    1. Many states make it hard to get an ID. There are fees to get the required documents, and sometimes documents do not exist (say due to home birth). Also many states have DMVs with limited hours and locations. Many states have counties with zero DMVs at all. If you are reliant on pubic transportation getting to a DMV is sometimes near impossible. This conversation would be very different if voter ID laws were accompanied by massive efforts to get IDs to people, But that rarely happens.

      1. Yes, those arguments have been made, but please prove it in the real world by producing one (just one) real live person by name, address and a picture who wanted to vote but was denied being able to solely because that person didn’t have an photo ID. I follow this issue somewhat closely and have never ever seen that in the real world, and if the effect was as pernicious as it is portrayed to be, there ought to be an actual human that it has happened to. I will also say that I am strongly in favor of waiving document fees and making it as easy as possible to get photo ID, and most states that require photo ID have those types of provisions.

      2. Oralloy, you can get a free ID to vote.

Voter ID laws such as the ones in Georgia and TX allows you to use a drivers license, a free voter photo ID, a utility bill, the last 4 of the SSN, and if all else fails, a signed statement saying they don’t have a SSN.

This is why they can’t produce anyone who can’t meet that requirement.

You should probably watch this video, in which white people on a college campus claim that black people can’t get an ID because they don’t know how to use a computer, they don’t have a phone, they don’t know where the DMV is, or they can’t get there, or they just don’t know how to get a free ID. Then the journalist went to Harlem. Black people were offended that he would even ask if they know how to get an ID, where the DMV was, or how to use a computer.

This claim that black people can’t get ID is racist. Notice how it only seems to be black people they claim can’t get ID? Not Asians, Middle Easterners, Eastern Europeans, or Latinos. It’s just black people. Notice how politicians keep lying about what’s in the voter ID bills? They say it’s Jim Crow, when all the voter needs is the last 4 of their SSN, for example. They just expect black people not to question what they say. It’s so racist I don’t know why more people don’t see it for what it is.

Another Sharpton-esque race hustler with no regard for people of his race. If he did, he be standing at a school in Baltimore decrying the 41% flunking student statistic.

  12. On voting, Democrats want to create opportunities for fraud… mail-out ballots, no (or easily fraudulent) ID forms, cross district voting, unsecured chain of control of ballots through vote harvesting, ballot boxes, etc.

They’ve lied for 4 years and are just continuing their streak. Clyburn is one of many. I’ve got Biden (and Psaki for Biden) at 101 clear and blatant lies. Sometimes it’s hard to classify if they are cognizant lies or just memorized lies but his recent speech was a doozy. Notably when he said ““We are facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War. That’s not HYPERBOLE. ” He obviously doesn’t understand HYPERBOLE, when he compares this to a war where 500,000 people died. You also had to love his pure lie that “the Republican state Legislature wants to allow partisan poll watchers to intimidate voters and imperil and impartial poll workers” when the legislation SPECIFICALLY stops impartial poll workers. Again, I know he’s addled but really?

Democrats have found succor with the Press who, despite occasional “fact checking”, have more often than not repeated and endorsed the Democrats’ lies. As for Kessler, his fact checking cred was destroyed when he lied about the Hunter laptop and Hunter/Joe meetings with foreign nationals in exchange for cash to Hunter Biden and his associates. Kessler gets about 15% correct – a failing grade – and it’s clear his bias affects his “facts”.

  13. Did not Rush Limbaugh have a list of Truisms about Life?

One of those Truisms should be that Democrats object to every Voting Law that makes it more difficult for them to cheat, defraud, and subvert an honest Election….and invariably shall lie about their scheming, fraud, and prevarications.

Nothing new in Clyburn got caught telling a boldfaced Lie….he got hoisted upon his own Petard.

Let him twist in the wind with Biden, Abrams, and the rest of the lying SOB’s.

  14. This is…, nothing. Filler. Fluff. Whatever you want to call it, Turley.

3 well researched books out in the last week, all well researched, all with personal interview time with Trump…, and all of them talking about how crazy it got in the last months of the Trump presidency with top level military thinking he was going to try a coup. The Big Lie is growing, Turley. And you say nothing about it while people actively go into crazy territory around it. And you won’t even acknowledge it, Turley. It’s like you’re someone who witnessed a beating and did nothing. Or you let a friend drive drunk and they crashed…

It’s time to talk about real things, it has been for awhile, and I can see you’re not going to even when your friend Barr is trying to rehabilitate his reputation. Hell, even Cippolone is trying to flee the sinking ship. It’s time, Jon.

    1. JT does this all the time. Focus on some small issue or slip up that the Ds do, while ignoring that the Rs do that 100x. The whole push for new voting laws is to try to prevent or make harder for certain types of people to vote. Those types of people are ones that the Rs think will vote for Ds. This also tends to disproportionately hit minorities. And all that is based on the lie that the 2020 election was tainted or stolen.

    2. Anonymous

Another one of your screeds: “Turley, do what I tell you to do.”

Typical Lefty trying to impose your views on somebody else.

Write your own blog if you don’t like Turley’s; or better yet, try to add something meaningful to the discussion.

  15. If, as Democrats claim, America is a white supremacist nation, then Jim Clyburn has devoted his entire career to the service of white supremacy. Clyburn is nothing more than a cheap huckster in a good suit. What has he and the CBC ever done for blacks? By their own characterization of the system as racist and white supremacist, they are admitting their own failure — over many decades — to using their privileged position to uplift their community. Instead, like their millionaire buddies the Obamas, they have accumulated power and money by screaming “racism” and diverting working class anger towards whites. CRT is one big con game, and “white supremacism” is the new commie scare.

    1. Critical Racists’ Theory presumes diversity [dogma] (i.e. color judgment), a sincerely held and expressed belief under the Pro-Choice religion that denies women and men’s dignity and agency, and reduces human life to a property. That said, a progression from the Nazis’ Jew privilege to the neo-Nazis’ White privilege… one step forward, two steps backward.

    2. Profit through stoking diversity, inequity, and exclusion, under a redistributive per chance retributive change regime to reimagine and suppress competing interests. One step closer to the dysfunction of the progressive state of South Africa, among others, where blacks lynch blacks and other colors excluded from the Rainbow, too.

That said, diversity of individuals minority of one. Baby Lives Matter

  16. “Voter suppression”. The most over stated topic in the news this year. Vote early and often. That means vote the ballots of anyone who doesn’t cast it himself. Or go to the vote counting computer on election night and cast many ballots of folks who didn’t vote yet.
    It happens.
Vote cheaters need to be prosecuted.

  17. Lefty politicians rise to Trumpian levels of mendacity.

Watch the bloggers yell: “Trump is worse.”

As usual they will try to avoid discussing Lefty mendacity.
