There is now an investigation into whether shooting dogs to avoid visitation is a violation of animal cruelty laws. I would hope so.
Councils were reportedly warned this month by the state government that a 1998 law mandates that “before destroying a seized or surrendered animal they must consider whether there is an alternative action.” On the top of my head, I could think of half a dozen alternatives including not allowing visitation during the pandemic.

This reminds me of the joke where a man, charged for murdering another man and his entire family, justified killing the entire family because he didn’t want the rest of the family left behind to suffer over the murder of the head of the family. There were similar jokes from the Stalin Era in the USSR “explaining” why the Soviet Government imprisoned and murdered entire families and ethnic groups during the great purges of the 1920s and 1930s to protect the “Peoples Revolution” – not the People themselves.
I guess these things are possible even in countries which superficially resemble our own, yet we must remember that Australia, Canada, and other allies do not have what we in the US have: the US Bill of Rights in the most enduring republican constitution in world history. Unfortunately, one of the two major parties in this country are hell-bent and destroying this unique endowment from the Founders framers of the Constitution with spurious arguments which are nothing but deflections to justify tyranny.

Humans are most susceptible to infection, then pangolins, then dogs. Bats were the 9th susceptible species. Some have posited that it’s possible pangolins functioned in its spread, but if that were the case, others that this is another step on the gain of function theories.

I read a tragic story where a women was disallowed from staying with her daughter, who was diagnosed with advanced cancer. Her daughter was married, with two small children. The grandmother promised to quarantine, and refrain from traveling. She just wanted to be there for her daughter, and help care for her grandchildren.

As an animal behaviorist and professional dog trainer I am absolutely sick over hearing this story. It is absolutely outrageous. It’s a Felony in the Commonwealth of Virginia to kill a dog. After working on a bill for several years those of us that worked on getting a higher penalty for abuse finally was accomplished. The relatively new law in Virginia now states that the dog does not have to die to be classified as a felony. The cruelty to animals that has been on for so long finally caught up with those who abuse animals to near death with no consequences. It’s now a felony. This is one of the reasons why I started doing pet education in preschool once I discovered that if a kid is going to be cruel to an animal it’s usually done before 4th or 5th grade which is the grades I started my program in. There is a direct correlation between child abuse and animal abuse. I do my best to teach children to always be kind to animals. It’s a shame that someone did not do the same in Australia. Truly sad.
