We have previously discussed free speech concerns over companies firing workers over their political viewpoints expressed on social media or other forums. A most recent controversy arose after the decision of Limited Run Games to fire community manager Kara Lynne, also known as Kara Gooch, because a trans-rights activist found that she has made critical comments about pro-trans policies. Limited Run Games declared that an employee harboring such views was a threat to a “positive and safe environment.” This entire controversy began over the fact that Lynne likes Harry Potter.
Lynne’s demise began when she made a seemingly innocent comment about being excited to play the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy. Millions feel the same way, but activists now consider anything connected with the Harry Potter series to be intolerable after author JK Rowling criticized trans-rights measures.
One of those apparently appalled by anyone expressing interest in Harry Potter was Twitter user Purple Tinker, who lacks the courage to post under his or her own name while seeking to destroy the career of another person.
Purple Tinker decided to investigate Lynne and later denounced her as a “transphobe” due to her conservative views and criticism of trans-rights policies. PT noted that Lynne follows conservative sites and figures on Twitter such as Ben Shapiro and Libs of TikTok. PT also created a dossier on Lynne of past tweets like one in which she says “if you think the # of trans crying about using a bathroom is higher than the perves [sic] using the excuse, you are what is wrong with this world.”
That apparently is all it took for Limited Run Games, which immediately fired an employee for holding conservative viewpoints. The same day that PT ran its dossier on Lynne, Limited Run tweeted that it had “investigat[ed] a situation” and that an employee had been “terminated”. This decision, Limited Run said, was made in order to “[support] an inclusive culture” and “foster a positive and safe environment for everyone”.
We have discussed numerous cases of employees and artists being fired for exercising free speech outside of the workplace. It raises a concern over a “Little Brother” problem of punishing speech. Notably, Lynne did not make any association with the company. It was PT who made that association to seek to punish this Harry Potter fan. PT has since vanished as is often the case in these anonymous drive-by cancel campaigns.
There is a growing intolerance for opposing views on the left that is being weaponized through private companies. The message is clear that expressing such views now endangers your very livelihood. Limited Run Games could have simply said that it does not require employees to confirm their political views to those of the company. Instead, it immediately yield to the flash Internet mob.
Roughly half of this country has supported conservatives and many hold these views. Indeed, many of the customers of Limited Run Games may hold these views. Yet, Limited Run Games has made it clear that, if employees hold such views, they can never speak them publicly. Imagine the uproar if companies began to fire employees for supporting trans bathroom policies or following liberal figures or sites on Twitter. That is not a problem because many on the left simply label any opposing views as hateful and unworthy of expression.
I have little knowledge of Lynne’s views but there is no indication that she sought to associate the company with those views. That required an anonymous intermeddler who knew that the company would cave rather than defend the right of all employees to hold and voice opposing viewpoints.
Nothing celebrates diversity, equity and inclusion better than banishing someone who disagrees with you!

Of note, J. K. Rowling recently has said that all this attacking of her by the trans supporters has led her book sales to improve and has just made her richer. Also she has set up a Women’s shelter in Scotland that is totally private and privately financed and which only accepts real women, no trans allowed. With a great deal of fanfare. The lady has shown more fight than most in this insane game of “what can we turn into next”.

The game feels good to the players, they get to be able to be whatever they wanna be – such as a cat, a mouse, or even a toaster? It won’t end well, for them or us. It’s like someone who jumps off a high cliff without realizing the consequences. For a little while there is freedom and exhilaration, but in a short while there’s a crash.

Not an attorney, so I don’t understand the ins and outs of all this, but I see the professor’s point. As a practical matter, businesses need to be tolerant of different viewpoints.
On the other hand, since this particular company may not have protections from anti-trust or section 209, they could argue that as a private company, they have a right of association that prevails over an employee’s public statements. Sounds like a good argument even if it might be illegal, intolerant, and impractical.
Ultimately, the left is so full of public vitriol, reverse racism, and hatred, I would suggest that conservatives do to them what they are doing to us. Expose them and force them to defend their statements on pain of unemployment. I’m sure there are suits at Limited Run Games who’ve made public statements that were nasty and indiscreet. HR departments are full of these road warriors. Find them.
If you need a model for this strategy, it’s called Libs of TikTok. Works like a charm. How about Libs of Tech? That’s a target-rich environment.
It should not be unreasonable for one to hypothesize that there may be some who game transgenderism for purposes particular to their own peculiarities. That one might actually be serving the causes of transgenders rather than opposing them is lost on those too self-righteous to appreciate that transgenders too might not want to share privacy with persons who lack morals. What then becomes of a policy that supposedly supports inclusiveness and positive and safe environments for everyone? One thing certain is that yet another company is on record for having violated its own policy that purportedly serves to protect everyone.
The irony of this cultural narcissism is that, while they’re making the world “safe” for the .0001%, they’re doing nothing to make the world “inclusive, positive or safe” for the vast majority of humanity. What’s the tipping point going to be?

For example, to satisfy the peculiarities of the trans community, which, as you note is less than a tiny fraction of a percentage of our population, our leaders and many businesses have willingly sacrificed the privileges that women and girls used to enjoy in this country. If a boy who thinks he is a girl wants to compete against girls in female sports, we must let him even if it means unfair competition for real girls. And, as one idiotic school said, if girls do not like undressing in front of a boy who thinks he is a girl, then they must crowd into a single stall bathroom so he can have unfettered use of the girls’ locker room to which the school thinks he is entitled. I thought the tipping point would have been reached long ago but I am concerned that because so many sympathizers now are in positions of authority, coupled with the effects of years of propaganda and virtue signaling, many of our fellow citizens may have lost their way.
In Virginia we had a trans student (boy who said he felt like a girl) let into girls’ bathrooms at school. He raped one girl there, and then when he was transferred to a new school, he did the same thing at the second school. In New Jersey, the correctional authorities bowed down to gender ideology and let a man who said he was a woman be housed in a woman’s prison. He got an inmate pregnant while there. These are not isolated incidents. Some moms of young kids now will not shop at certain stores (e.g., Target) because men who say they are women are welcomed to use the ladies’ room. Our authorities have lost their way indeed.
Your Viriginia story is not true. The boy was not trans, did not claim to be a girl, and was NOT “let in” to the girls’ bathroom. The girl he raped was not some random victim, it was his girlfriend. They used to regularly meet in the girl’s bathroom to have sex; obviously without the school’s permission. On one occasion she was not in the mood, and he did not take “no” for an answer. None of this had anything to do with trans policy. The school did not have a “trans-friendly” bathroom policy at the time (it does now, but that happened after this story). The girl reported the rape to the school, which immediately reported it to the police officer on site.
The real scandal was that the girl called her father, and when he showed up the school wouldn’t tell him anything and called the police to remove him, and later the school board chairman flatly denied that any rape had taken place in a school bathroom, and when the father naturally objected in rather forceful terms the police arrested him. That was completely wrong, but again has nothing to do with the topic here.
(Actually, I believe the Loudon County grand jury’s findings and several reports indicated that the boy wore a skirt to enter the girl’s restroom, in a school with a very liberal transgender policy, which started the whole media frenzy and reports of parents deemed “domestic terrorists” and “transphobic.” Please correct me if I am wrong.

Sorry, JCH. Gender is set when the sperm burrows into the ovum. At that point and from then on, every cell is of the same gender. Even the various trisomy situations are set from conception.
JCH: You have your “science” a bit off. There is no “metamorphosis” from female to male. One either inherits the Y chromosome, which eventually overrides one of the X chromosomes, or one doesn’t. There is no transformation from X to Y; to put it another way, X does not become Y. They are two separate items from the beginning. From an actual scientific journal: “males inherit a Y chromosome from the father for a XY genotype (mothers only pass on X chromosomes). The presence or absence of the Y chromosome is critical because it contains the genes necessary to override the biological default – female development – and cause the development of the male reproductive system.” The biology is clear — it’s the ideology that gets it wrong.

As my above referenced comment indicates, it isnt until day 45 (6th week) that the embryo adopts a male or female sex. Prior to this point, the embryo is said to have neither sex aka sexual indifference. The embryo has the potential to develop into either pathway of sexual differentiation, i.e. bipotential. Genetic expression explains how undifferentiated tissues (usually embryonic) can develop into any particular pathway depending on external cues or genetic programming. All of our 30 trillion nucleated cells have the same exact 46 homologous chromosomes. They all have the potential to develop into the zillions of proteins our body expressed. What determines their expression are transcription factors. These TFs (transcription factor SOX9 for embryonic sex differentiation SRY gene) direct genes to pursue programs as determined from evolution. TFs determine which phenotype (type of unique identifying traits) is pursued.
TL;DR: The embryo has undifferentiated gonads until day 45. We most assuredly are not all females in the embryonic stage.

Your not telling me anything new here. As Matt Geatz infamously discovered a human fetus is nigh indistinguishable from that of a dolphin. Truth be told there is less than a 10% difference between the genome of a human and any other animal. Laid side by side at respective stages of development all embryos, even those of birds, reptiles and fish look practically identical.
So? You also started as a fish. The sequence of DNA and the chromosome designation, male or female, do not change because of genomic imprinting. All sorts of hormonal and other chemical things can occur, sometimes creating a unique individual, but the end product doesn’t mean the genes have changed. One should not confuse such changes with mutations and other things.

All designed to increase the speed of fetal development. Assuming your description is accurate it’s hard to see how the words “male” and “female” have any real meaning for the first two months. And it’s hard to see how any such meaning, if it exists, has any relevance to a person after they’re born.
