“You’re Done, Over, Out of the Art Club”: Activists Go Full Dementor Over HBO Max’s Harry Potter Series

We have been discussing the unrelenting campaign against British author J.K. Rowling, who has raised concerns as a feminist over the impact of transgender policies and laws. She has been denounced as a TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminist) and even the reading of her famous book series is now considered unacceptable by many. This unhinged response includes cancel campaigns against bars that even briefly show the Harry Potter game. Now, activists are denouncing HBO Max for a new series on Harry Potter in which Rowling will understandably be the executive producer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new series  will “cast new leads and include far more detail from the seven novels, which were often rather truncated in their previous adaptations into Warner Bros. feature films.”

Activists went full dementor upon hearing the news:

Many activists targeted Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, for saying that the company has no plans to “get into” or address Rowling’s political views.  There was a time when such a position would seem a victory for free speech to allow writers and artists to create regardless of their political views. There was a time when Communists and socialists were blacklisted. Now, it is the left that is routinely calling for blacklisting of those with opposing views.

Kathryn VanArendonk, who appropriately writes for a site called Vulture, pounced on the news: “This faithful adaptation of harry potter, announced with absolutely bullshit craven disdain for rowling’s political impact, is bad.”

Rolling Stone reporter Sean T. Collins insisted that artists and writers should first and foremost answer for their political views before their art is discussed — calling feminists who question transgender policies as engaging in hate speech. Collins wrote “If you interview an actor or filmmaker or executive involved with the Harry Potter tv show and don’t lead with a question about JK Rowling leading a hate group you’re done, over, out of the art club.”

So if you adopt a feminist view at odds with transgender policies, this reporter believes you should be blacklisted and forced “out of the art club.” Your art does not matter any more than the work of Communists blacklisted in the McCarthy period.

It is not the lack of sense but the lack of shame that is most striking in these attacks.

  1. Does Rolling Stone magazine really believe that JK Rowling cares about getting kicked-out of “the art club”?

  2. America has become overrun with opponents of freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, equal protection under the law, the right to due process, and the right to life. America has also become overrun with supporters of the ongoing war against nuclear-armed Russia, which has not been authorized by Congress as required by the Constitution.

Defeating American’s internal enemies of the Constitution, on the right and the left, will have to be undertaken in two arenas:

First, the courts. During Trump’s first term, he appointed over 230 federal judges and three Supreme Court justices who believe in following the Constitution. Now is the time for the aggressive filing of lawsuits in defense of the Constitution from coast to coast.

Second, the ballot box. In 2020, Trump almost won reelection despite the unconstitutional, pre-election censorship of conservatives and despite never-seen-before changes in election procedures without the constitutionally required authorization of state legislatures. Since, 2020, Big Tech, particularly Twitter, has been somewhat defanged or at least exposed, control of election procedures in a number of states has been rightfully taken back by state legislatures, and Americans have seen, close up, what a leftist-run government looks like. Now is the time for the return of Trump.

  3. Just a small group of malcontents trying to convice the rest of us that they are a large majority who weild tremendous influence. They make me laugh.

  4. Leftists rival Goebbels in misleading the masses. Murder is “Healthcare”. Murder is, “Re·pro·duc·tive Rights”. A word of criticism for a homosexual is “homophobia”. Trump is the most vile president in history. Billy Blythe earns a quick $100,000,000 from his book sales, promoted by the Big Media, and avoids prison as a war criminal. “Four Dead In Ohio” is our new national anthem and the dead in Rwanda pile high as the sky.
You may not know it, but LBJ lied and started the Conflict in Tonkin’s Gulf and Nixon is trounced for bombing our enemies in Cambodia during his VietNam War. It’s all happening at the zoo.

  5. Not one Clinton supporter says a word about his culpability in the African Holocaust. Trump’s indictment for mismanaging his business books? The media tramples each other for the chance to condemn him.

  6. Just wondering. Who’s at the top of the heap of the protected classes of people. I’m going to take a guess. Black, transgendered, female (I guess). It looks like a true white female(feminist) has been knocked down a few notches. Who’s in today is out tomorrow.

Another insurrection has taken place at one of our state capitols. As the Florida leglature was considering anti-abortion legislation, insurrectionsists flooded the capitol building and threw paper and other stuff at members of the legislature, thus impeding the functioning of democracy. Per the Daily Mail:
“Earlier Thursday, there was chaos in the Capitol as protesters flooded the building.
Demonstrators were seen shouting and throwing handfuls of stickers and small pieces of paper down on lawmakers as they entered the House chamber.”
They even sat in the galleries and heckled the floor leader.

We are confident the MSM will be calling for these enemies of democracy to be rounded up and put in solitary confinement.

  8. F*** these spoiled brats. That’s all I have left. We are in for a world of hurt with these kids, and it is 100% their parents’ fault, they raised them long before a school ever touched them. Thanks. Thanks a lot. 🙄🙄 really appreciate the negligence. 🙄🙄

  9. The trans cult is no different than the Jim Jones cult. They are drinking the suicidal kool-aid. Except now they are forcing it down our throats. This is a fight for survival.

    1. Sick SOBs not getting help –only given more rights – they speak commie — the rest of do not.

  10. What a completely demoralized life these Leftists follow. They are a suicide cult. Is there a living creature on this planet whose entire existence is dedicated to the destruction of their own species?

    1. Olly – they are indeed pathetic losers. They are sailing the ship of civilization into a vortex which will suck us down to hell. They must be defeated and the ship turned around.

      1. They must be defeated and the ship turned around. — oldmanfromkansas

Who teaches them? Who finances them? Who organizes them? Who enables them?

These are kids and young adults being used as shock troops. Remove their leadership, financing and organizers and “their movement” will wither and die.

  11. Watching Rowling and the unhinged Left go at each other reminds me of how I feel when I watch Notre Dame and the Longhorns play football: I just wish there was a way they both could lose.

  12. Why does anyone care about the 0.05% of the mentally ill ? Just because they scream the loudest? F these Pedo’s

  13. Why are we so afraid of these mentally ill fools? Forget them. Get back in THEIR faces if they get in yours. Grow spines!

  14. I have a hard time getting upset with these progressive morons, I just wish they would go away. I am glad to see some companies just saying no to this stupidity.

    1. The stupidity lies in the failed, subversive judicial branch which has refused to support and enforce the Constitution since 1860, giving America over to Lincoln’s BFF, Karl Marx.

The stupidity lies in allowing people under 21 to vote.

The stupidity lies in allowing people who pay no federal income tax to vote (57% in 2021).

The stupidity lies in allowing people who receive cash public assistance to vote.

The stupidity lies in allowing beneficiaries of infinite entitlement programs to vote.

The stupidity lies in allowing illegal aliens and “asylum” seekers to vote.

You want stupidity? There it is.

      1. George, you may be right (and I think you are) but I suggest you tone it down and focus on issues that are at least somewhat winnable. Those that you steam about lately are not (even though you are right). There comes a time when you must recognize that water is over the dam.

        1. Thank you so much.

The Supreme Court of 2022 recently acted retroactively by 50 years to overturn the corrupt decision by the Supreme Court of 1973 and strike down abortion as a federal right, and return abortion to the States and to the Constitution.

The Supreme Court must now act retroactively by 150 years to overturn and strike down everything Lincoln et al. did, beginning with his illegal and unconstitutional denial of secession, which is not prohibited in the Constitution, and return America to its Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Lincoln threw the baby out with the bathwater; he threw the Constitution out with reprehensible slavery which was implemented by legal means and must have been abolished by legal means.

In a society of laws, the laws must be obeyed – right now, original fundamental law must be returned to.

The Constitution, Back to the Future.

What you want is the unconstitutional extant communism Americans suffer under today.

That makes you compliant and complicit in the implementation of the principles of communism in America, Comrade.

You give up; you surrender to communism.

          Congratulations.

        2. I doubt George Washington would have allowed you in his army. That is not a compliment. I would very much prefer, however, that you argue law with me on a law blog. Please point out where I am wrong on fundamental law. Start here: Secession is not prohibited by the Constitution and is fully constitutional – Lincoln must have been immediately struck down by the Supreme Court under its power of Judicial Review. Lincoln must have been precluded from proceeding into war and his wholly unconstitutional “Reign of Terror.” Reprehensible slavery must have been abolished through legal means such as advocacy, boycotts, divestiture, etc. Lincoln must have vigorously enforced extant immigration law.

The legitimacy of judicial review and the judge’s approach to judicial review are discussed.\

          Abstract
The doctrine of judicial review holds that the courts are vested with the authority to determine the legitimacy of the acts of the executive and the legislative branches of government.

          – Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs

          1. George, There is no express or implicit provision, process, or authority in the Constitution for a State to secede from the US. In addition, the Supreme Court in Texas vs White (1869) held that there is no constitutional right fir a State to secede. If you want such a State right, you should propose a constitutional amendment.

            1. Of course there is no allowance in the Constitution for secession of a state! The state governments are superior to the federal government in a REPUBLIC so they have a perfect right for the people of the state to decide whether or not they need to stay in the union! As a state we would be dissolving the COMPACT made with the federation. A COMPACT is a special contract which consolidates separate entities (countries) for protection against foreign enemies. Each of the states in the USA can best be viewed as a nation under a republic’s rule with a compact for mutual protection. Unfortunately, our federal government now assumes powers it doesn’t possess under the Constitution!!

  15. Jonathan: In your column you claim: “Now, it is the left that is routinely calling for blacklisting of those with opposing views”. You cite your column on 1/22/21 in which you denounced the decision of Simon & Shuster to cancel the publication of Josh Hawley’s book because he supported the Jan. 6 insurrection. Hawley did eventually get his book published by Regnery Publishing, a conservative publisher. No harm no foul. Josh Hawley didn’t lose his free speech rights.

Your earlier column was titled, in part, “Why Burn Books When You Can Ban Them?”. Book banning is rampart in the country–particularly in the South–a subject you have intentionally ignored. Why? Because conservative activists are doing it. Case in point: In Llano County, Texas conservative commissioners banned a number of books from the public library because they deemed them “pornographic”. Residents objected to the removals and sued claiming their 1st Amendment free speech rights were violated along with their due process rights because the books were removed without prior notice.

Last week US District judge Robert Pitman agreed with the plaintiffs and ordered the banned books be returned to the library. He said the books were not “pornographic”. And what has been the response of Llano county commissioners? They have scheduled a special meeting for today to consider whether to “continue or cease operations” at the library. If the commissioners decide to close the library all the residents of Llano county will be deprived of their free speech rights! An important issue you no doubt will ignore.

    1. Dennis – Let’s examine this comment.
      1) You say Sen Hawley suffered no harm from the cancellation of his book contract with Simon & Shuster because he obtained another contract with Regnery. This is obviously wrong. Regnery is a vital resource for conservative authors, but that company certainly lacks the wealth and influence of Simon & Shuster. Hawley’s financial reward, and his ability to reach readers, took a hit when his contract was canceled.
      2) You say that Commissioners in Llano County, TX “banned” books from public libraries because they deemed them to be pornographic. Assuming your statement is correct, it only shows that the public authority in that county is taking the steps that they are entitled to take. States primarily, but also local governments, have a traditional “police power” to protect the health, saftety and morality of their communities. To quote Wikipedia:
“The authority for use of police power under American Constitutional law has its roots in English and European common law traditions. Even more fundamentally, use of police power draws on two Latin principles, sic utere tuo ut alienum non laedas (“use that which is yours so as not to injure others”), and salus populi suprema lex esto (“the welfare of the people shall be the supreme law”), to justify restriction of individual liberties in order to protect the general welfare. The concept of police power in America was further expanded in a series of notable court cases in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, including the landmark 1851 Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court case Commonwealth v. Alger, and the 1905 Supreme Court case Jacobson v. Massachusetts.”
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_power_(United_States_constitutional_law)#:~:text=In%20United%20States%20constitutional%20law,general%20welfare%20of%20their%20inhabitants.
The fact that a local judge has decided to override the decision of the Commissioners may only show that the judge is out of control.
You constantly confuse acquisition or deacquistion of books with “censorship”. That term does not apply to what books are purchased by the county for its own library. Rather, it is a general prohibition by government at some level on the public distribution or display of materials withiin the entire jurisdiction. In fact, at this point, almost all written materials are free to circulate in this country. But even here, there are limits on distributing “obscene” materials. The Supreme Court held in 1971 that “obscene” materials could be censored by local governments in some cases. Quoting Hudson, “Obscentiy and Pornogrpay” [https://www.mtsu.edu/first-amendment/article/1004/obscenity-and-pornography]
“In the 1970s, the Burger Court determined that the obscenity standard was too rigid for prosecutors. Therefore, in Miller v. California (1973) the Court adopted a new three-part test — what Chief Justice Warren E. Burger called “guidelines” for jurors — that was more favorable to the prosecution:
      (1) whether the average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest;
      (2) whether the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by the applicable state law; and (3) whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.”

    2. @Dennis

You too, are an idiot. If nothing else, these comments confirm our national IQ is now sub 100.

    3. There was no insurrection, And Hawley did no “support” the violence on J6.

It is likely you actually beleive what you write that makes it all the worse.

Free speech and the First amendment are not the same thing.

You are correct that Hawley’s first amendment rights were not violated.
      His free speech rights were.

But more important that Sen. Hawley’s rights – the rest of ours were.

As this JK Rowling incident indicates.

Hawley is a US Senator. Rowling is possibly the most published author in history.

It is one thing when only far left publishers care fringe left authors. Or only far right publishers carry far right authors.

But when you try to control what is mainstream – especially when you try to make political what is NOT political – YOU are the problem.

I have no problem with economic warfare for political purposes.

But as the left plays it, that is a very dangerous game – as Anheiser Busch and Disney and many others are learning.

The canceling left is TINY in comparison to the right.

In a different era – before the left made EVERYTHING political – mass market companies avoided politics like the plague.

Placating either the left or the right is the kiss of death for most mass market companies.

The Correct posistion for any mass market company is we will not touch real political issues.

If an author sells – we will publish them.

Niche publishers and producers are for Niche views.

Whether you like it or not Hawley is not a Niche View.
Hawley won 52% of the vote against an incumbent Democratic Senator.
As noted before Rowling is probably the most popular author of all time.

    4. Grow up the harm here is to the public as a whole.
You cite several instances in which YOU the left have increased the political division within the country.

I and myriads of other americans, watch movies and Shows, by actors, producers, and hollywood that is Far to the left of us.

We moan and groan when these people spout nonsense at the Oscars or wherever else they get a bully pulpit.

But we continue to watch their work – not because we agree with them, Not because their politics is not often very repugnant to us.

But because they are actually good at what they do – ACTING. And unless YOU continue to politicize everything – we will continue to do so.
Except when their works sucks – which often happens when they try to bring left wing nut politics into it.

AHB is in being Canceled right now – Because they tried to bring politics into beer.
Disney has been weak for several years – because they keep trying to bring politics into their entertainment.

Don’t get me wrong – parents will continue to see Disney movies – So long as those movies are GOOD.
The majority of us – most of the right will tolerate – ignore lots of left wing nut bunk in what we consume – so long as
you do not make it BAD or OVERTLY offend us.

Which those of you on the left insist on doing.

Rowling’s work is not political. It is Dam Good entertainment – which is why she is the best selling author of all time.

There is no Anti-Left wing nut message in here work. If anything her work leans left politically.

But YOU are inisting on making the non-political political.

And you wonder why everything is getting more contentious ?

Because YOU want to fight over everything.

Do NOT try to FORCE your politics down everyone else’s throats – and we will all get along fine.

Do NOT try to cancel things that are actually good – because tiny deviations from left wing nut Dogma offend you
And we will get along fine.

If you do not grasp that this is actually about Free speech (not the first amendment) – then you may have to be given a lesson.

The rest of us can start boycotting left wing nut actors and producers and directors, and the companies that use them – instead of making choices based on the quality of the work,
the rest of the country can do as YOU do and make everything about the politics of the people behind the work.

And just so that you understand – free speech does NOT mean – its OK if you can speak at the bottom of a well on odd numbered sundays after 3am.

Free speech means that the WHOLE audience decides how large a platform people and messages get.

Rowling has EARNED one of the largest platforms in the world. She has been careful to divorce her WORK from her political advocacy.
Further she is actually RIGHT regarding her political advocacy. There is a Trans Epidemic that is rooted in mential health problems NOT actual gender issues. And confusing mental health issues with gender issues, is damagng to society – and particularly Women.
Teenage girls – who are demonstrably suffering from an epidemic of anxiety and depression, are being propogandized into making life altering decisions with very little forethought, long before most of them have the ability to do so, and this is aided, abetted and coerced by left wing nut adults.
Separately men – are calling themselves women and using that to destroy the actual oportunities for women in the few domains that have been protected domains for women. There is no rational basis for exclusivelu female domains – if biological men are going to be allowed in based on a claim to be women.
Either Women’s sports or colleges or …. are for Biological women, or separate domains exclusively for women should not exist.

But NONE of that is in her Books or Movies.

Those of you on the left are the most intolerant and hateful people that have every existed.

You are little different from the Nazi’s

If YOU continue to expand politics into everything – the right is perfectly capable of Cancelling those on the left too.

If everything is political – Guess what – EVERYTHING IS POLITICAL.

  16. These folks have only one mode: Always totally pissed off.

No matter what you say or do, they are angry, demand others be maximally punished, and against everything they are told to be opposed to. So it is both pointless and futile to deal with them. They are best simply cast aside and what they demand ignored.

Rather than wasting time trying to accomodate them, because you are a racist babykiller even if you do as they demand, you might as well instead do exactly what you want and say what you want for your own personal benefit. Again, it is pointless to reason with them, why waste your own time?

Once you have removed yourself from their sphere of influence. They will always and invariably turn against each other for not being enough of a zealot or not toeing an increasingly thin line. Without anyone to punish or call call evil on the outside, the need to exercise their rage goes unsatiated and the feriocity of this increases. So let them attack themselves in their own company. There are much more worthwile pursuits in life than doing the bidding of the unreasonable.

    1. Darren – but what if you’re Riley Gaines trying to give a speech? How can you then simply decide not to deal with them? That scenario is not unique to her, as it plays out on campuses all over the country. I’m reluctant to accept self-censorship as the answer.

      1. I understand your concern and you have a good point…it seems I might not have expressed my views clearly. If you/someone like Ms. Gaines wants to speak, she should say what she wants despite what unyielding disruptors demand. If hecklers start up have them removed by the police. Make security a requirement in the speaking contract. That’s a benefit of allowing yourself the upper hand. Security or no speech. College doesn’t like the clause, c’est la vie and good bye. You don’t have to back down, in fact It is often safer not to do so, else they feel they have power over you and it encourages them to escalate.

As for speaking to students at these problematic colleges I saw “why bother”. It’s not the hecklers, it’s the enabling, passive students that allow the heckers who don’t deserve to learn advice from learned and wise speakers. Let them figure out life on their own, and at a much later period than those who are strong and open minded. Why should I care if they ruin their own opportunities? Doesn’t affect my life any.

People can find a great deal of tranquility by not measuring one’s self-worth by submitting to the expectations of unreasonable people.

  17. I emailed Senator Dianne Feinstein for clarification on this Harry Potter matter.

Senator Feinstein is in the basement of the Bates Motel unable to answer.

    1. You’re a sexist!
      ____________

“Pelosi suggests Democratic attacks on Feinstein are sexist”

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) appeared to imply that sexism may be playing a role in calls for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to resign. Pelosi was asked for her opinion on calls by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) for Feinstein to resign, and she questioned why it seemed male senators never get the same criticism to resign when they fall ill. “She deserves the respect to get well and be back on duty, and it’s interesting to me. I don’t know what political agendas are at work that are going after Sen. Feinstein in that way. I’ve never seen them go after a man who was sick in the Senate in that way,” the former speaker said Wednesday.

      – Washington Examiner
      _________________

Pelosi, as usual, absolutely hysterical, incoherent and preposterous! No person in his right mind could, in any way, relate Feinstein to sex, God Bless Her.

  18. Jonathan: When conservatives and GOP politicians, like Gov. DeSantis, are banning books in public schools, a subject you have ignored and I will address in a subsequent comment, you now try to divert attention to the campaign against JT Rowling by “dementor” feminists. You even compare the campaign to the blacklisting of screenwriters and producers in the Hollywood. The comparison is non-sensical.

For those who don’t know the history, the late 1940s were a time of growing anti-Communist hysteria in the US–prompted by fear of the Soviet Union. It was the beginning of the Cold War. The “Hollywood blacklist” was established that denied employment to screenwriters and others accused of being “Communists” or sympathizers. Hundreds lost their job without any proof. In late 1947 HUAC subpoenaed 41 screenwriters, directors and producers to testify about their alleged membership in Communist organizations. The “Hollywood 10” refused to cooperate in HUAC’s witch hunt. They were found in contempt–fined and put in jail.

We don’t have any of that today. Rowling won’t be hauled before a “HUAC”-like congressional committee to explain her anti-trans views. She’s free to express her views. She is not being “blacklisted” by Hollywood. The fact that HBO is producing a new Harry Potter series speaks volumes about Rowling’s free expression rights.

But, yes, there has been criticism of Rowling by activists who support trans rights. On Twitter one user said: “Harry Potter is about the magic of love, acceptance, belonging. The power of courage. The impact of hope. Trying to take those things away is a terrible tragedy. Trans women are women” But you seem to think Rowling should be immune from criticism by activists .If you really believe in “free speech” isn’t it a two way street?

    1. Dennis, “…banning books in public schools….” sounds so nefarious, I miss the good old days when I could sit back in 1st grade recess and flip through Hustler Magazine with by bros.

Banning books in Florida is the “good people on both sides” of “hands up, don’t shoot” and they yelled “this is MAGA Country” before they strung a rope around my neck…at 2:30 on a 10 degrees below night in midtown Chicago.

      1. People like Dennis need books of naked little boys and girls engaged in sexual acts so as to use these evil instruments to groom future cult followers. They try to be clever in their words: banning books is bad, but banning guns is good. The former eliminates the tools they need to groom kids and grow their following, the latter prohibits Americans from defending themselves from people that pay Dennis to troll on this forum to tear down our country. coup d’etat is their goal.

They always mention Adolph Hitler as the greatest evil that ruled a land. They never mention Joseph Stalin or Mao Zedong because they are their heroes, if for no other reason, because Stalin killed more than 20-30 million people, while Mao killed over 40 million. Hitler killed less than 10 million. So it follows, they always defend Stalin and Mao because they wish the DNC leadership to follow in their steps. Biden is a mere stepping stone to Stalinizing the US

    2. “Hundreds lost their job [sic] without any proof.”

      – DM
      ____

Liar! Alger Hiss was a communist agent and official in FDR’s State Department which was full of communists. FDR presided over the gross implementation of communist principles and programs, namely wholly unconstitutional departments, “work programs,” Social Security and Medicare. Article 1, Section 8, Congress has the power to tax for ONLY debt, defense and general welfare (general meaning all or the whole – not one, a few or some) understanding that general welfare means infrastructure that all or the whole use, not favor or charity for some – not “from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”

Like Lincoln, FDR should have received a letter of congratulation and commendation from Karl Marx for being the “earnest of the epoch” leading America toward the “RECONSTRUCTION of a social world.” Alas, Lincoln and FDR’s teacher and mentor died in 1883.

      “Witness”

      – Whittaker Chambers, Introduction by William F. Buckley Jr., Robert D. Novak

First published in 1952, Witness was at once a literary effort, a philosophical treatise, and a bestseller. Whittaker Chambers had just participated in America’s trial of the century in which Chambers claimed that Alger Hiss, a full-standing member of the political establishment, was a spy for the Soviet Union.

    3. Well, when the democrats can teach a kid to read, maybe book will be needed for their kiddies, until then B’more, Miami, Dade, Jacksonville, Detroit, etc. won’t even notice.

Get you porn and mental degenerate books elsewhere, pervy

    4. Elementary school children don’t need books teaching them to masturbate or give blow jobs. Banning books like that, because they’re sexually explicit and inappropriate for small children is being responsible. That you think it’s okay, and get upset about that, shows your suspect morality and/or unfamiliarity with the material being removed.

Banning 1984 or Animal Farm by George Orwell, not so much.
