Newsom Sends a Card: California Governor Suggests that Reparations is More Than Just Money

For months, we have been discussing how Democratic politicians would deal with massive reparation demands after campaigning for years on such payments being a moral imperative. As proposals rose to as much as $5 million a person, Newsom went silent. Now, California’s Reparations Task Force has issued recommendations for reparation payments as well as a slew of other benefits for black citizens. Newsom has finally responded by what sounded like the common birthday card that reads “I couldn’t afford a present so I gave you this card instead.” With California billions in the red, Newsom appears to be sending up a trial balloon on offering heartfelt apologies, promises of reform, and no cash.

In addition to the cash payments, the Task Force called for eligible residents to receive $13,619 for each year of residency due to racism in health care; $148,099 or $3,366 for each year between 1933 and 1977 for housing discrimination; and $2,352 during the 49-year period between 1971 and 2020 for mass incarceration and racist policing.

Newsom told Fox News Digital that reparation”is about much more than cash payments.” Instead, he stressed:

“we’ve already been hard at work addressing: breaking down barriers to vote, bolstering resources to address hate, enacting sweeping law enforcement and justice reforms to build trust and safety, strengthening economic mobility — all while investing billions to root out disparities and improve equity in housing, education, healthcare, and well beyond. This work must continue.”

Good luck with that.

Citing “reforms” already in place makes the Task Force look like the ultimate bait-and-switch. It makes black voters look like chumps given recent polling showing a massive shift in the Black community on the question: 77 percent of Black Americans now support reparations.

For years, Newsom and other Democratic politicians have campaigned on reparations and that bill has now come due. A card and an apology is not going to cut it.

Just last week, speakers demanded cash in large amounts. Rep. Barbara Lee (D., Cal.) declared that “Reparations are not a luxury, but a human right long overdue for millions of Americans. We are demanding that the government pay their tax.”

She was not talking about a heartfelt apology.

Nor were others at the hearing.

In prior hearings, speakers have been asking “where’s the money.” Some warned the Democratic task force that they would not vote for the party unless they received money before the 2024 elections.

San Francisco’s board of supervisors is also facing the same expectations after a recommendation of its African American Reparations Advisory Committee to give $5 million to each eligible Black resident as reparations.

Some balked at even that figure. Reverend Tony Pierce asked “Where’s the money? Where’s the cash? Where’s the check?” “$5 million, San Francisco’s already made a move. $5 million is nothing.”

Some congressional Democrats have pushed for similar federal reparations and passed a bill out of the House Judiciary Committee in 2021 that failed to receive a floor vote. BET founder Robert Johnson has called for $14 trillion in federal reparations.

Even Disney has gotten into the act with a controversial children’s episode in which cartoon children demand reparations.

The years of calls for reparations have created a greater expectation, even an urgency. One well-known California activist declared: “It’s a debt that’s owed, we worked for free. We’re not asking; we’re telling you.”

As I wrote earlier, this bill has come due for Newsom and he now appears to be making the long-awaited pivot away from payments. As expected, it is a bit late for the pivot after politicking on the issue for years to gain votes.

As one minister declared at the hearing last week, “Tell Governor Newsom we’re coming. He knows me.”

    Republican Congressman George Santos of Long Island faces seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of lying to the House of Representatives on financial forms.

    Santos was charged today at a Federal Courthouse in Central Islip, New York. The most surprising count concerned a false Unemployment Claim during the pandemic. Santos was charged with collecting $24,000 in benefits while actually working for Harbor City Capital, a now defunct Florida-based firm.

    On December 31 of last year, Professor Turley wrote a column noting that Santos was a prolific liar. Turley, however, did not anticipate any criminal charges stemming from all the lies. Oddly, Professor Turley saw no need to question the $700,000 in cash Santos lent his campaign; an infusion completely out of proportion to Santos’ income and net worth.

    1. Yes, DOJ managed to indict Santos on pretty trivial charges in a few months.

      They have a far better and stronger case against hunter, yet 4+ years after the investigation began – with numerous obvious charges that are all slam dunks – nothing.

      The claims that Manafort was engaged in money laundering hinge on the fact that he was allegedly violating FARA (he was not, Manafort paide Tony Podesta – democrat, to do the actual lobbying). Regardless, because he was violating the FARA law – allegedly, his money transfers were purportedly then criminal money laundering.

      We ACTUALLY have Hunter for FARA violations. But Hunter can not be charged with FARA violations – because that makes all the money transfers that the House is tracking ALSO money laundering – and that makes the entire Biden Clan into a criminal conspiracy – because they all received laundered money.

      We are back with progressives are short sighted and once again hoist by their own petard.

      DOJ is going after Santos for what appears to be claims of skimming the petty cash. While Hunter is smuggling in multi million dollar diamonds.

      We now have laundered money going to 10 members of the Biden Family – including a grand child – what valuable services was that child providing the chinese ?

      We have atleast a dozen shell companies being used to hide the distribution of the money.

      And we have DOJ refusing to turn over an FBI document alleging Bribery of Joe Biden.

Freshman GOP House member George Santos, aka George Anthony Devolder Santos, has been criminally charged in a 13-count indictment by the DOJ Public Integrity Unit. The charges include campaign finance violations, fraud, false statements on his House disclosure reports, theft, embezzlement, etc. You name it, Santos has been charged with it. The only thing he has not been charged with is stealing a check to buy clothes in that store in Brazil. No doubt, when Santos gets out of prison Brazilian authorities will want him back to face those charges.

Steiner took down a former Arkansas state senator and two health care executives over a million bribery scheme. That guy just got 4 years and 2 months. Jacob Steiner is Jewish.     1. One other thing, which I’m sure Turley knows: the standard by which a judge’s evidentiary ruling is decided on appeal is abuse of discretion. Judges enjoy broad discretion in deciding whether the probative value of evidence is outweighed by the prejudicial effect. He is correct on the facts when it comes to an appeal–law is decided by the judge, facts are decided by the jury and this jury’s decision was not “clearly erroneous”. There was sufficient evidence to support the verdict. Trump is not likely to win an appeal.

Your children married people descended from others enslaved from other countries and had children, and those kids grew up and married people enslaved from other countries, for several generations, AND some of those descendants fought in a civil war to keep Korea whole. Now answer the question: what COUNTRY are you claiming those multigenerational descendants from multiple countries should be “returned” to?

                      If you’re truly asking me what I’d do at that point, I’d ask the formerly enslaved people where THEY wanted to live. Because otherwise, you’re just continuing to act like a slaveowner trying to control them.

          The status of the slaves who were freed was altered from that of “property” to “illegal alien” and they must have been immediately and compassionately repatriated as they were immutably inadmissible per the Naturalization Act of 1802, which was the immigration law of the land in full force and effect on January 1, 1863.           The 14th Amendment is illegitimate and unconstitutional. The constitutional amendment process does not include barbarian, kinetic military force, a gun to America’s head. Lincoln’s nascent communist successors corruptly and improperly ratified, not one, but three amendments to the Constitution when, typically, it is nigh on impossible to pass even one. Brutal, post-war military occupation and oppression will never be an environment appropriate for amendment of the Constitution.

          The singular American failure has been and remains the Supreme Court and the judicial branch, which must have found secession not prohibited in the Constitution and, therefore, fully constitutional – it must have found every “progressive” act to implement a principle of communism in America unconstitutional. Justices of the Supreme Court failed to fulfill their sworn-oath duty to support the clear and evident, meaning and intent of the Constitution. None of Lincoln’s unconstitutional “Reign of Terror” would have ever happened if the law had been followed in a society of laws.

The largest county is indeed a blue county and controls a great deal of the legislation in the state.                     1. Most of what I learned in medical school, aside from anatomy, has been rendered obsolete. Physiology has come light years from just 20 years ago, Genetics, is a completely different field today compared to 1990s. Consequently pathology is vastly different. Molecular biology has taken center stage, and it is wonderful. However, most physicians fail to keep up to date their basic medical sciences, which renders their knowledge antiquated.

                      today I had a discussion with a Primary Care Physician about obesity and whether their patient should be prescribed Wegovy. I’m against it. I’m for the tried and true methods of caloric restriction and increase in caloric expenditures. it’s a math thing really. However, anxiety is at an all time high in our society, and people are coping with eating. So Wegovy might benefit the patient in question, but that is not my call, thankfully.

                      cytokines are proteins that are secreted by most cells in our human body including non-nucleated cells like platelets. What we understand (as opposed to know) about cytokines today is light years from what I was taught in medical school. There are pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, of which Interleukin 6 (IL-6) factors prominently in inflammatory processes, including obesity and atherosclerosis. Exercise provokes secretion of IL-6 which leads to reduction of adiposity. It’s a math thing once again but on a chemical molecular level.

                      happy to help. But as always, medicine is continually changing. It’s not the science itself that changes but rather our pitiful understanding of it. We are limited by our instruments, diagnostics and our rather incomplete comprehension of molecular mechanisms. In time we will know more which will provide more information, but I suspect that the real deal is at the atomic level. but I could be full of it.

                      Health issues many years ago resulted in my gaining over 40 pounds of excessive weight. The only thing that worked was when I changed my eating habits to a draconian diet, one that was unpleasant, caused fierce carb cravings for the first month or so, yet was successful.

                      Essentially I fasted by omitting breakfast. (hunger was removed by a cup of coffee) I reduced the portion size of lunch and had a dinner serving of what was normal for me. I eliminated any processed or packaged foods, reduced restaurants to no more than once per week. I ate mostly fish for protein, had as many vegetables as I wanted, and ate whole foods. I greatly to nearly completely stopped eating grains, rice, sugar, potatoes and high starch foods, bread, salty food, and pop.

                      Over about four months I was down to a normal BMI for my height. I found that despite sometimes terrible food cravings at first, my diet changed in that I don’t eat as much as years past and my taste preference for real food is higher than bad food.

                      This strategy I used might not be recommended from a nutritional / health expert perspective, but all I can say is that it worked well for me. The diet I maintain now isn’t as draconian–I do eat potatoes and rice occasionally–but mostly is now what it was then.

                    3. Darren, what was your caloric expenditure before vs afterwards, i.e. exercise? People who add exercise into diet restrictions…you know the drill. Carbs are an important source of glucose that the body requires. Fat is a not a source of glucose. Protein / amino acids are, but catabolizing muscle so that glucose is attained from those amino acids found in muscle, is never desirable. Wasting results. You seem to have found a balance. If you do not exercise, then your caloric intake works for your desired goals. Exercising regularly is just a good idea even at age 80+.

                      No one becomes a world class public speaker, accomplished writer, champion bodybuilder, celebrated concert pianist, etc overnight. The famous 10,000 hours story applies. It is a matter of adopting habits that lead to excellence. I woke at 3 am as usual, ate oatmeal, protein bar, cuban coffee, and will leave shortly for the gym to train with weights plus cardio. I have been training on weights since high school. When people learn my age, particularly young guys, they are shocked to see me lift heavy. Considering Ive been lifting for >40 years, ….. it is something I just do, no questions asked. We all have routines that we do not question: waking to go to the bathroom, showering, brushing teeth, etc. If one incorporates exercise into their daily, planned regimen, like showering, it all follows.

                      The challenge is to educate people why their current habits are lethal and that adopting new lifesaving habits are doable. However, we are all imperfect, complex, fragile people. We were not meant to be sedentary.

                      I did not change my exercise level of any significant degree during the draconian diet. One reason for this was at first I wanted to see which way the diet would go and keep the variables to a minimum. I maintained the same activity level but saw the results were working so I stayed with it. I thought if I excercied much more it could cause me to either eat more or something counterproductive. In reality perhaps if I doubled my exercise I might have bettered or at least quickened the result yet I took the safer route of the status quo. I ate a bit more protein than usual at the suggestion of a family member to avoid the wasting as you mentioned with the reduced carb intake. I went into the diet knowing that it was drastic but temporary since I had to find some way to break out of where I was before and establish a new normal for which the body will set itself. Yet I do know that I can’t ever eat the typical American diet, it isn’t worth the risk.

                      You are right of course in the benefit of exercise and the mortality associated with the lack thereof. What I find truly bewildering is going to a grocery store and seeing what nearly all people load into their shopping carts…adulterated junk food. It seems everything must have a name brand, be prepackaged, and it is almost as if they are wanting to slowly poison themselves. It has attained a new form of sustanance, one divorced from living on the Earth and substitued man-made substances in lieu of real food. Everthing in their cart is named with something having a registered trade mark. On the rare occasion when I see someone having loaded their cart with only vegetables, fruits, meats, and nothing prepackaged I think “finally, someone cares about what food truly represents.”

                      With these giant box store grocers, it is astounding how much is dedidicated to junk and how comparitively small the real food sections are. One could fit the real food sections, like the produce department and the meat / dairy, into the area about the size of a larger convenience store and provided the stock and receiving area is large enough it would support all that a person really needs to live. In fact when the CSA is not in season, I shop at a family run store like this and avoid the box stores as much as possible.

                      Returning to the theme of adopting healthy habits that lead to desired outcomes, I used to tell people to make a shopping list before entering the grocery store and to buy only those items. Go through the kitchen cabinets and refrigerator, and inspect what is needed. Buy those items only. It also saves money. Impulse buying leads to poor outcomes and expensive groceries. After arriving at the grocery store, shop on the perimeter of the store, and avoid traveling the inside aisles unless if there is an item that is on the list, e.g. oatmeal, tuna, coffee, laundry detergent, etc. Fresh fruits and veggies, dairy, meats, seafood are usually found on the perimeter. This is a healthy habit forming behavior. Aisles have all the junk. Going to a grocery store is best seen as buying foods we absolutely need as opposed to want, again, this entails adopting a healthy habit that is learned. We prefer cooking our own desserts because we use fresh ingredients or items that are reasonably low on artificial ingredients. I tell people to read labels and observe fat, sugar, sodium, etc content. If you cant pronounce an ingredient, put it back on the shelf and walk away. This also makes for focused shopping and avoiding being a victim of marketing as you referenced.

                      we are, in the final analysis, what we eat. Popping multiple daily Rx pills till we die just isn’t my idea of healthy living.

              I have yet to see conclusive evidence that a program of exercise relieves existing obesity. It might be as simple as the strongly obese don’t, won’t, exercise enough. Dunno.

      2. Estovir, the body can be trained to eat fat rather than carbohydrates. The Keto diet causes fat to be eaten rather than stored. Then knowledge is there but people are taught that remaining in their comfort zone has no long term consequences. They want to control what you hear so we should we be surprised that they want to control what you eat.

        1. The Keto diet is dangerous long term because ketone bodies are toxic to the brain. The brain is very picky about its energy source, with glucose being the preferred source (glycolysis, citric acid cycle). Ketone bodies work short term but accumulation of KB leads to ketoacidosis which leads to death. Type I Diabetics and alcoholics risk ketoacidosis due to lack of insulin to shuttle glucose to tissues in T1D or insufficient glucose in alcoholism. Alcohol is not a carb.

    The most recent evidence of this goal comes from the International Commission of Jurists, which joined two U.N. agencies to issue a report advocating that all “consensual” sex between adults and minors be decriminalized. From Principle 16 – Consensual Sexual Conduct:

    Consensual sexual conduct, irrespective of the type of sexual activity, the sex/gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression of the people involved or their marital status, may not be criminalized in any circumstances. … With respect to the enforcement of criminal law, any prescribed minimum age of consent to sex must be applied in a non-discriminatory manner. … Moreover, sexual conduct involving persons below the domestically prescribed minimum age of consent to sex may be consensual, in fact, if not in law. In this context, the enforcement of criminal law should reflect the rights and capacities of persons under 18 years of age to make decisions about engaging in consensual sexual conduct and their right to be heard in matters concerning them.

    1. When I read last month about the UN’s initiative to decriminalize pedophilia, I had to make sure I wasn’t reading the Babylon Bee because even for the UN this sounded outrageous. But alas, no. It’s true. Talk about the Twilight Zone!!!!

      1. Thank you for the reply Mary. With all the talk about reparations for the potential ancestors of slaves, in that conversation should be the victims of slavery currently happening today. Most notably are the minors being trafficked for sexual exploitation. Kinsey laid the foundation for the proliferation of pedophilia within our culture and we need to root this out in every form. Our culture has a long history of debating any number of issues on the basis of morality, ethics and from that we’ve enacted laws to protect the rights of our citizens. Minors should be the most special of all special interest groups that need the most protection from adults who would wittingly or unwittingly do them harm.

      2. Mary, Leftist are at war with states that have passed laws that Prevent gender medical treatment to minor. The logic here for the leftist pedo’s is clear. If kids get to make gender decisions, they can sure consent to sex. The UN and WHO is on board with adult sex with minors.
