“Which Country is he Loyal to?”: Democrats Go Full McCarthy in Attacks on Musk

Below is my column in The Hill on the disgraceful Democratic attacks against Elon Musk over his status as a naturalized citizen. For years, some of us have raised concerns over the adoption of McCarthyite tactics and rhetoric by the left to demonize those with opposing viewpoints, including critics of the massive censorship system under the Biden Administration.  Those attacks are now reaching a dangerous crescendo after the 2024 loss in the presidential election.

Here is the column:

This month, 75 years ago, Sen. Joe McCarthy (R-Wisc.) gave his infamous speech denouncing disloyal Americans working at the highest levels of our government. It was the defining moment for what became known as McCarthyism, which attacked citizens as dangerous and disloyal influences in government.

Some of us have criticized the rising “rage rhetoric” for years, including that of President Trump and Democratic leaders, denouncing opponents as traitors and enemies of the state.

In the 2024 election, the traditional red state-blue state firewalls again collapsed, as they had in 2016. The response among Democrats has been to unleash a type of new Red Scare, questioning the loyalty of those who are supporting or working with the Trump administration in carrying out his promised reforms.

Elon Musk is the designated disloyal American for many on the left. That rage has reached virtual hysteria on ABC’s “The View.” This is the same show before the election on which hosts warned that, if Trump were elected, journalists and homosexuals would be rounded up and “disappeared.”

After the election, democracy seemed to stubbornly hang on, so the hosts had to resort to attacking as disloyal anyone joining the government or supporting Trump’s policies.

This week, co-host Joy Behar followed many others in questioning Musk’s loyalty and attacking him over being a naturalized American citizen: “The guy was not born in this country, who was born under apartheid in South Africa. So, [he] has that mentality going on. He was pro-Apartheid, as I understand it.”

Behar was then forced, perhaps by panicked ABC lawyers, to walk back the comment — such retractions having become a regular feature on “The View“. What came out was the type of jumbled confusion that results when you interrupt a lunatic on the metro in mid-rave.

Behar stated: “I’m getting some flack because I said that Musk was pro-apartheid. I don’t really know for sure if he was … He was around at that time, but maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t—he might have been a young guy, too. So, don’t be suing me, okay Elon?”

This anti-immigrant attack on Musk, however, has worked its way into many Democrats’ talking points, even though their party had previously claimed to defend immigrants against racist Republicans seeking to close the Southern border and deport criminal illegal immigrants.

On Capitol Hill, Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) launched a xenophobic tirade that should have shocked the conscience of the nation. She warned citizens that Musk could not be trusted because he is an immigrant who has been a citizen for only a couple of decades: “Mr. Musk has just been here just 22 years and he’s a citizen of three countries. I always ask myself the question: With the damage he’s doing here when push comes to shove, which country is he loyal to? South Africa, Canada, or the United States? And he’s only been a citizen, I’ll say again, 22 years.”

Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney was another joining in to attack Musk for being an immigrant. “You may be unfamiliar with that part of our history since you weren’t yet an American citizen,” she wrote on Musk’s social media platform, X.

These attacks are straight out of McCarthy’s playbook. It was McCarthy who insisted that “there are no degrees of loyalty in the United States — a man is either loyal or he’s disloyal…” Of course, McCarthy (and the earlier Red Scare) attacked government employees, writers and others on the left. It is now the left that is employing the same tactics, including censorship, blacklisting and public vilification.

Throughout the 2024 campaign, the Democrats, including President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, painted Republicans as either aspiring or actual fascists. That continued recently with Minnesota Gov. and former Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz (D), who referred to Republicans as “fascists and Nazis.”

Even journalists and civil libertarians have been reviled using the same terms. After a hearing on censorship two years ago, MSNBC contributor and former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) attacked journalists and members who had spoken in favor of free speech. She denounced the member witnesses (Sen. Chuck Grassley, Sen. Ron Johnson and former Rep. Gabbard) as “Putin apologists” and Putin-lovers.

Stacey Plaskett, the Democratic delegate representing the Virgin Islands in the U.S. House, even suggested arresting respected journalist Matt Taibbi, who, along with Michael Shellenberger, testified on their investigation into a massive censorship system developed under the Biden administration.

The attack on Musk is particularly disgraceful, given his contributions to his adopted country. Ironically, filmmaker Michael Moore denounced the deportations of criminal illegal immigrants last week by noting that Trump was deporting someone who might cure cancer or be the next Steve Jobs. Well, this is a naturalized citizen who not only could be the next Elon Musk. He is Elon Musk.

As politicians and pundits question Musk’s loyalty, Space X is moving to rescue two astronauts stranded in space. Musk has volunteered his time and skills to achieving a record reduction in the size and waste in government. One can disagree with his priorities or the means he uses to achieve his goals, but he has nobly stepped forward to serve his country despite death threats from the left.

Musk is also facing such attacks in Canada, where thousands have signed petitions to strip him of his citizenship. The left did not seek to revoke the citizenship of figures who have eviscerated free speech and other individual rights in that country. It is Musk who is persona non grata.

This is nothing new for Musk, whom the left has targeted since he announced an intention to buy Twitter and restore free speech protections on that site.

The concern is not for Musk, who has the intestinal fortitude (and financial means) to stand up to a global mob. Moreover, with polls showing overwhelming support for reducing the size of government and the budget, the campaign to obstruct these efforts is unlikely to resonate with voters.

The danger is more acute for the country as disagreements over policy are transformed into attacks over loyalty. It is the most dangerous form of rage rhetoric, an effort not to debate but to demonize those with whom you disagree.

When you have members of Congress standing in front of the Capitol, denouncing naturalized citizens as untrustworthy after a mere 22 years as a citizen, it is a moment that would have made McCarthy blush.

  1. Jonathan: When we say the Musk/DJT administration is in total chaos here is another data point. The DJT/Pete Hegseth trans military ban is having trouble defending itself in the courts.

    In Talbott v. Trump plaintiffs brought a lawsuit challenging DJT’s EO transgender ban. Under Hegseth he claims transgenders pose a “threat to unit cohesion” and affirming care is a financial strain on the military budget. Lawyers for the government are having a hard time backing up those claims in court. In a Saturday filing with DC Judge Reyes government lawyers admitted they have no idea how many transgenders are actually in the military. They only relied on an outdated 2016 RAND report that estimated about anywhere between 1,300 to 6,630 trans military personnel. There are 2.1 million in the military. How could such a small number of transgender people pose a “threat to unit cohesion”? Then government lawyers said the military spent only $52 million over a decade on gender affirming care. That’s a tiny fraction of the military’s budget of $918.1 billion budget in FY 2024.

    And there is another glaring omission in the government lawyers position in court. They failed to name any mental health condition–other than gender dysphoria–that would disqualify someone for “honesty, humility, and integrity” that the ban cites as a justification.

    The failure of the Hegseth DOD to provide any data to support the transgender ban was best summarized by Lambda Legal CEO, Kevin Jennings, who said: “This is proof that the trans military ban is a solution in search of a problem. If trans people’s presence was somehow disruptive to the military, they would have the data to prove it–and they don’t. This proves that this order is motivated by animus rather than reason”. Further proceedings before Judge Reyes are set for March 12.

      I too wish the exchange had happened behind closed doors, that would have been better though I know the answer would have been the same; Zelensky is a petulant child playing games with people’s lives, and that is straight up bunk, he was revealed to be the clown he is.

      Yes, Russia is bad, bad for everyone, always has been in the industrial age; but so is Ukraine, they are just as awful. We have a fight between two countries whose governments are equally a pox on humanity, and the people, who are innocent, be damned, but that sure isn’t our fault. We would all be more at peace if both were eradicated; that isn’t going to happen, so we must deal.

      Now that it’s in Europe’s hands, they might be best off just telling Zelensky to piss off. Putin is not stupid, and he is not going to destroy territory he wants to annex. What we are doing is what the rest of Europe should have done at the beginning. It would have never spiraled in that case, but unfortunately we had the golbalist dems in charge. We are correcting that mistake, at least stateside.

Points of view that are difficult to debate are not debated, the primary authors of such points are simply vilified. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” is too hard to poke holes in, hence the decades long demonization of Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson’s personal history is of no importance, they simply choose to attack the messenger in order to try to destroy the message.

  4. I really wish people like Turley would refrain from the term “McCarthyism.” After all, intercepts of Soviet messages showed that he was right in most instances. George Marshall WAS predispositioned toward Mao’s Communists as were others in government. There actually were a large number of Communists in the State Department although some had been dismissed by the time McCarthy made his infamous speech (which was not recorded and there is no record of what he actually said.

    As for Democrats, they’re being Democrats. They’ve been upset ever since the Soviet Union fell apart.

      No, I disagree. When people are acting collectively as a regime, you call them a regime. McCarthyism is perfectly appropriate for our modern left. If they had power, they would be perfectly happy to eliminate not just dissenters, but people who simply disagree. If anything, ‘McCarthyism’ is far too mild. We escaped full on fascism by a hair’s breadth. If you do not agree, maybe examine your own personal bubble, though that is just my opinion. and if your life did not change one iota since 2008, then kudos, you are one of the privileged. I remember that a scholar on Soviet spying in America (it may have been the writer of the the Hiss-Chambers controversy, who was interviewed on C-Span) said that the problem with McCarthy is that he arrived too late. By the early ’50’s the cover of the Soviet spies had been blown and most had flown the coop.

    Musk is basically running the government. Yet, he was never been elected to office and has never been confirmed by the Senate. And the House MAGA Republicans refuse to call Musk to testify and justify his policies. That’s unaccountability on steroids! Musk has made it his mission to slash and burn government agencies authorized by Congress and fire thousands of workers. That’s a violation of many laws and courts around the country are the only ones holding him accountable. That’s because the servile MAGA congress won’t do anything to reign in Musk’s rampage.

    And Musk is doing this while at the same time feathering his own nest by raking in billions in government contracts. He even wants the FAA to cancel an over $4 billion contract with Verizon to modernize the agency’s communications system and award the contract to Musk’s Starlink. Talk about brazenness! While at the same time Musk says SS is a giant “Ponzi scheme” the those who receive SS benefits are “parasites”, Musk is a walking, talking “parasite”, living off government contracts.

    Next to DJT, Musk is the most hated person on the planet. Need proof? Look at the mass protests erupting over Musk’s policies. At Yosemite park this weekend thousands marched to protest Musk’s firing of park personnel. There have been mass protests at Tesla dealerships in lower Manhattan, Boston and Tucson–and even in Europe at Tesla plants. Protesters in NY shouted in unison “Don’t buy Swasticars!”. Even JD Vance couldn’t escape the protests. He tried take a ski vacation in Vermont. The streets were lined with protesters who shouted “Vance is a traitor. Go ski in Russia!”. According to Fox Vance had to move to an “undisclosed location” and then left early. And there have been town hall protests around the country by voters who voted for DJT but now abhor his policies. The people have had enough! None of this has anything to do with “McCarthyism” by the Dems. The real “McCarthyism” is coming from DJT and Musk who are firing anyone in government who might criticize their policies.

    Now that Musk, DJT and JD Vance have completely capitulated to Putin there is a revised edition coming out the “Art of the Deal”. The new version has a cover with DJT depicted on the cover on all fours, with Putin’s feet resting on DJT’s back. The title of the revised book reads “The Art of the Kneel”. A perfect depiction because DJT, his VP and Musk want the US to look like Putin’s Russia–a dictatorship of kleptocrats!

But as it has been pointed out, foreign policy experts have written papers going back as far as a decade that if NATO continued it’s eastward expansion, we would wind up in the mess we have today. I am not a foreign policy expert and even I knew that. But here we are. The only logical and sane thing to do is get a ceasefire, and a peace deal. We have to stop this game of WWIII chicken which Biden brought us to. Currently there are talks about a EU army, or EU troops on the ground in the Ukraine. A NATO mission without the US. I would like to see it. I would like to see the EU finally police it’s own backyard without us having to do it for them. Let them play WWIII chicken. Let us see how that goes for them.

The reality of the situation never seems to enter anonymorons mind: The Ukraine does not have the manpower to win this war of attrition. And putting NATO or American troops on the ground would likely escalate the situation into a WWIII and as you aptly point out, nuclear war. No one wins. Any arguments about who started what and when are moot at this point and just dumb to argue.

Starmer is a chump who seems to immediately believe whatever crap spontaneously issues from his orifice, but the other EU heads are both giving lip service, and making a last ditch (futile) effort to back Trump into a corner where he might feel compelled to continue to give material assistance and/or moral support to military confrontation with Russia on Ukraine’s behalf.       1. UpstateFarmer-you are correct. The Russians are truly paranoid about invasion and I suppose that is because they have been invaded from both East and West on many occasions. It does not excuse their aggression but you can understand it. And NATO was warned not to go too far. This mess, as you stated, is not a surprise.

          Thank you. It seems if we are not shouting for war, we are accused of being a Russian asset. A Putin lover. What we need is a cease fire and then get everyone with a vested interest to the peace table and serious talks. No one will get everything they want. Both sides will have to give up something. But they need to come to an agreement they can live with and we stop playing this game of WWIII, nuclear chicken.

    2. Oh, I have also stated in the past that I would like to see the Ukraine push Russian forces back to the pre-war borders. But that is not realistic. We can and have been sending them weapons and other war material but they have a manpower issue. If they do not have the men to shoulder the weapons, hold the line, make advances no amount of weapons and war material is going to matter. The Biden admin was pushing Zelensky to lower the draft age, which is very, very unpopular in the Ukraine. Then there are some seven million refugees in other countries of which 41% are male. Obviously not all of them are of military age, but there could be a substantial pool to recruit from. IIRC, Poland once entertained the idea of sending those military aged males back to the Ukraine for military service. I would like to see it happen. Again, not realistic. So the only logical and sane course of action is a ceasefire and a peace deal. Seems the only ones who want that are Trump, the Russians and the actual Ukrainian troops on the front lines. Everyone else, from Zelensky, to the EU, to Democrats and even you seem to want more war. More fighting. More dying.

  18. Regular readers might be familiar with Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals”. It is apparent that Democrats are using Alinsky rules (once again) because they lack real solutions, refuse to reflect on their failures and opt instead to attack which results in alienating voters. Let them.

    RULE 4: “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”

    RULE 5: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.”

    RULE 8: “Keep the pressure on. Never let up.”

    RULE 9: “The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.”

    RULE 10: “If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive.”

    RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.”
