Le Pen Faces New Criminal Charges For Sending Pictures of ISIS Abuses On Twitter

libertyWe have been discussing  the rollback of free speech in France where writers and speakers are now routinely prosecuted for what would be protected political or religious speech in the United States, including the recent conviction of Robert Menard, mayor of Beziers and a top adviser to Menard was found guilty of inciting hatred against Muslims for complaining about the increasing numbers of Muslim children in French schools.  Now Le Pen is again being charged herself.  She has been accused of the “distribution of violent images” for sending out  tweets depicting ISIS propaganda and violence. It is again an example of France’s denial of free speech and particularly political speech.  Regardless of how one feels about Le Pen’s views, these were core political expressions.

South Africa’s New Economic Plan: Expropriation of Land and Printing Money

170px-Coat_of_arms_of_South_Africa.svg.pngWith South Africa’s poor economy showing slight improvement and a major credit decision looming,  the new government of President Cyril Ramaphosa would be expected to chart a careful and conservative approach.  However,  its new leaders are turning to two measures that have historically triggered utter disaster for African nations: land expropriation without compensation and the even more dangerous plan to simply print more money and give it to the poor.  I have long admitted to have a Chicago School bias from my undergraduate days, but this does not seem promising for this struggling country.

Near Miss: Virginia House Escapes By Inches Destruction From Falling Tree

IMG_7824

There are times when even bad luck events can be the luckiest moment of your life.  On Friday, my family, like hundreds of thousands of people in Northern Virginia, was without power after high winds knocked out power lines and blew transformers.  I went outside with my son Jack and we came upon a house in McLean that had a massive tree fall inches from the house. The tree literally ran the length of the house right along its exterior wall with only inches to spare. Given the five dead from the “Bomb Cyclone” on the East Coast, this type of near miss borders on the miraculous.

CNN Legal Analyst: Trump “Colluding In Plain Sight” and Criminal Case Is Now “Devastating”

Norman-Eisen-1200x1500I just posted a column detailing why I am “skeptical” of collusion theories against President Donald Trump, a view that the President recently tweeted.  CNN Legal Analyst and former White House ethics attorney Norm Eisen responded yesterday to my quote in the Trump tweet with his own analysis that the criminal case for collusion is now “devastating” and that Trump is “colluding in plain sight.”  His evidence? Trump’s failure to respond sufficiently to Russian attacks.  It does not seem to factor into Eisen’s analysis that the government is responding on various levels, imposed some sanctions, and that the specific means used to combat the Russians is a discretionary policy question that balances a wide array of technical, legal, and diplomatic factors.  Nevertheless, Eisen assured the public that the criminal case is now devastating.

Screen Shot 2018-02-26 at 11.22.51 PM 1.pngTurkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is reviled throughout the world for his autocratic rule and denial of the most basic civil liberties.  He consolidated power by dismantling secular traditions and interjecting Islamic policies into the government. His latest outrage was caught on tape as he explains to a crying 6-year-old girl that she is expected to die as a martyr and covered with a Turkish flag at her death.  The video below captures Erdoğan’s Islamic extremism and his utter lack of empathy in dealing with the child.

Behind The Times: Oregon DUI Conviction Thrown Out Due To Delay In Testing

screen-shot-2018-02-24-at-22749-pmpng-0026cbcf867730f2There is an interesting ruling out of Oregon where Charles Hedgpeth was able to successfully challenge his drunk driving charge due to the delay in testing by the arresting officers.  Coos County Circuit Judge Richard Barron was reversed in his conviction of Hedgpeth after the Oregon Court of Appeals ruled that the hour and 45 minute delay could have allowed more alcohol to enter his blood in pushing his blood alcohol content (BAC) to .09 — the legal limit is .08. This is a case where time was of the essence for conviction.
