I have always marveled how everything in the Middle East can be reduced to a conspiracy theory. This week, however, Egyptian authorities are exploring the possibility that the recent shark attacks in Sharm al-Sheikh were the result of Mossad using GPS technology to guide the sharks. That’s right, shark attacks at a beach resort so the Jews did it.

While I was trying the case, the Florida appellate court issued an interesting ruling that a former elementary school principal was wrongly convicted of child pornography when he pasted the faces of some of his 11- and 12-year-old students over pictures of adult women. John Stelmack is already serving five years for the crime.

Bob Hope once charged that “people who throw kisses are . . . hopelessly lazy.” Former Bradenton Beach (Florida) Police Officer Tim Matthews thinks that they are also forms of battery. Matthews is the subject of a lawsuit after he arrested a 14-year-old bloy who blew a kiss at him.

A San Francisco anesthesiologist dressed as Elvis Presley “D[idn’t] Think Twice” and came to the aid of a collapsed runner at Las Vegas’ Rock-and-Roll half marathon. Claudio Palma, M.D., dressed in jumpsuit, long sideburns and scarf, (and maybe “Blue Suede Shoes” or even “High-Heeled Slippers,” who knows) administered CPR to the passed-out young lady. Startled upon her revival, the runner said she was O.K. and bid farewell to the look-alike who “Return[ed] to Sender” with the other runners. To cap off the day, Palma “D[id] the Vega,” and got married at a run-through chapel.

St. Lucie County School Board and the St. Lucie County School Classroom Teachers Association in the Southern District of Florida have settled an incredible lawsuit that we previously discussed. The family of nine-year-old Alex Barton sued after teacher Wendy Portillo forced an autistic child to stand in front of the class and be criticized — and then invited the classmates to vote him out of the class. The school will now pay a $350,000 settlement — and Portillo will return to the classroom after a yearlong suspension.

Circuit Court Judge F. Lee Russell in Shelbyville, Tenn., clearly does not get that whole “justice delayed is justice denied” thing. Russell has been reprimanded for “excessive delay” after he waited nearly 11 years to rule on a case.

In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, families are celebrating the marriage of a young couple. Well, one of the couple is young by any measure. A 14-year-old girl, Siti Maryam Mahmod, has been married to a 23-year-old man in what we would classified as a case of obvious pedophilia in the United States. However, in Malaysia, intimate relations with a 14-year-old girl is called marriage rather than pedophilia.

The pressure continues to find ways to cut off support and access to WikiLeaks material. Judson Phillips, president of Tea Party Nation, thinks that it makes sense that voting rights in the United States should be restricted to those who own property. He believes that property owners have more of a “vested stake” in a community than do people who do not own property. That’s what he claimed on a weekly program hosted by Tea Party Nation recently.

Visitors to the State Capitol here in Richmond are invariably drawn to Virginia’s cascading marble and bronze tribute to her greatest native sons, the George Washington Equestrian Monument. High atop rides George Washington pointing the way– first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen. Just below and in a rather pensive mood, stands the “Sage of Monticello,” Thomas Jefferson, flanked by Chief Justice John Marshall, orator Patrick Henry, and the rest of Virginia’s intelligentsia of the Revolution and Founders of the Republic. Oh, Virginia doesn’t forget its allegorical figures either — Justice, Independence, Bill of Rights, Revolution, and even Finance, all have their own bronze embodiments just one tier below. The monument stands for all the Commonwealth values and aspires to be.
Even by Kentucky standards, it was stunning. Democratic Governor Steve Beshear standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Evangelical Right to announce a $37 Million tithe in tax incentives to finance a creationist theme park named “Ark Encounter.”
