Semper Fido: David Motari Allegedly Apologizes for Throwing Puppy Over Cliff

While some commentators have rushed to suggest that the puppy shown in this video was either dead or stuffed, the accused Marine has reportedly posted an apology. David Motari has been named as the Marine in the video, though the Marines are still investigating. In what is purported to be a posting from him below, he blames the stress of combat.

In his alleged apology, Modari says that in combat people “develope [sic] a different sence [sic] of humor than what others are used to.” He say that he is “sorry about the dog.” He also complains about people bothering his family and his girlfriend.

For the statement, click here

Yet, in this video of the incident, a strikingly different individual is shown.

There is still no confirmation that this is indeed a genuine apology from Motari. Notably missing in the statement is any support for the spin recently put on the video to claim everything from a dead puppy to a suspected IED, click here

Even if there is no confirmed apology, one would have expected someone to come forward to make that stuffed or deceased dog claim given the torrent of controversy. Some advocates seem to be struggling to find a way to blame a liberal media for the controversy and have made criticizing this Marine into an attack on all Marine. Obviously, the outrage is due not only to the horrible attack but that this is not indicative of our service members. Indeed, the Marines seem pretty ticked about this whole episode and they will likely prove the harshest judges of all.

It is certainly wrong that people are harassing his family and girlfriend. That is a uniquely stupid act — not unlike throwing a puppy over a cliff. While combat fatigue may be a defense (or mitigating factor) in a possible criminal charge , click here, it should not alter the fact that this Marine does not appear capable of maintaining proper discipline and conduct in a combat area. It may be sufficient for Motari to simply agree to a less than honorable discharge as the proper punishment for this monstrous act. What he lost (in what this posting suggests is a momentary loss of humanity) should be the honor to wear the uniform of the United States Marines. It is a hard punishment for a young Marine, but it could be worse: he could be thrown over a rocky cliff.

  1. I stumbled across this web site after googling the Marine’s name expecting to find the usual subjects bashing our soldiers – and I found them. So far the only people showing sanity here are those than understand the pressure our soldiers are under in any conflict and how that impacts them. The surrenderists want to yank them all home and give them a big hug while the thugs of the wordl continue their murder sprees. Others here think America is the thug and that is despicable.

What is surprising is Mr. Turley associates himself with such a bunch of left wing lunatics – oops, he is a LEFT WING LUNATIC!!

GOD BLESS THE US MARINES! each and every one of htem 1,000% better than anybody that has posted here including Turley the left whiner, excuse me, winger.

  2. I’m suspicious of the myspace page. His was actually closed down. He’s married (it says single) and you can be sure he is not talking to anybody but his superiors right now.

  3. Well said Patty C.

I’m off on family business; take care of yourselves, good posters! We’re all Americans in this infernal predicament together!

  4. Calm yourself, ernie

Most of us here are very much aware and equally outraged at our politicians – who, among other things, got us into this so-called war OVER our objections AND, despite appearances, WITHOUT our full and knowing consent or permission.

    We’re on your side.

  5. He needs to go to jail, that’s what he needs. Look at the Michael Vick case. Motari needs to go to jail for killing this puppy.

  6. Ernie,

My comment was directed to Janet, not yours. Just so no misunderstanding.

But I agree with you alot. “Civilians” and “rear echelon (fill in the rest)” don’t understand the black humor that comes with the position of being in a crazy environment. Normal people do sick things, like posing corpses, adjusting dead hands to peace signs, and so forth. You may know whereof I speak. Not everyone acted out but the feeling was pretty universal. So the puppy thing is familiar to me, but I can’t blame people who don’t understand that environment for getting critical.

  7. Not what I had hoped for, but I am used to disappointments.

But I agree, any lynch mentality is pretty regrettable and I’m sure extreme things are being said; every abuse case riles up strong emotions. The soldier’s family is completely innocent, and the soldier himself is in an extreme environment that breeds a very strong black humor. Still one must control oneself when it comes to taking life and inflicting pain.

BTW, I am a vet and had my turn at defending everyone’s freedom as the poster John alluded to. Its just that not all vets, John and I are good examples like Americans as a whole, see things the same way.

    And that’s reassuring actually.
    .

  8. Now people are outraged! WTF America?!

Yeah this is not behavior to be condoned of course, but all this outrage over a fckn puppy? Where’s the outrage over the thousands of dead and maimed Americans? The Thousands of Dead Iraqi Civilians? The sick War Profiteering? Oh no, don’t get outraged over that, instead lets all create a movement over a martyred puppy?

Just goes to show how the American public is so disconnected with whats happening around the world. Spare your tears over a puppy and how about shedding some for the countless people who have died needlessly in Iraq.

I got news for you people, a hell of a lot of worse acts are bing committed in Iraq. I’m a Marine Iraq vet and am vehemently against this war but c’mon, people are dying right now yet we’re outraged over this? Are you really that surprised that trained killers (thats why marines exist, to kill other people) have a sick sense of humor and often act on it? Wake up people, war is hell and I’m disgusted with America’s indifference to the reality of war.

  9. Janet – I think your comment lost its way.

In case you’re confused, the title (and subject) of the thread is “David Motari Allegedly Apologizes for Throwing Puppy Over Cliff”.

    Glad I could help.

  10. The Other Obama
Michelle Obama and the politics of candor.
    by Lauren Collins

    March 10, 2008

…Obama begins with a broad assessment of life in America in 2008, and life is not good: we’re a divided country, we’re a country that is “just downright mean,” we are “guided by fear,” we’re a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents. “We have become a nation of struggling folks who are barely making it every day,” she said, as heads bobbed in the pews. “Folks are just jammed up, and it’s gotten worse over my lifetime. And, doggone it, I’m young. Forty-four!”

From these bleak generalities, Obama moves into specific complaints. Used to be, she will say, that you could count on a decent education in the neighborhood. But now there are all these charter schools and magnet schools that you have to “finagle” to get into. (Obama herself attended a magnet school, but never mind.) Health care is out of reach (“Let me tell you, don’t get sick in America”), pensions are disappearing, college is too expensive, and even if you can figure out a way to go to college you won’t be able to recoup the cost of the degree in many of the professions for which you needed it in the first place. “You’re looking at a young couple that’s just a few years out of debt,” Obama said. “See, because, we went to those good schools, and we didn’t have trust funds. I’m still waiting for Barack’s trust fund. Especially after I heard that Dick Cheney was s’posed to be a relative or something. Give us something here!”

First Ladies have traditionally gravitated toward happy topics so it comes as a surprise that Obama’s speech is such an unrelenting downer.

Obama acknowledged to me that some advisers have lobbied her to take a sunnier tone, with little success. “For me,” she said, “you can talk about policies and plans and experience and all that. We usually get bogged down in that in a Presidential campaign, over the stuff that I think doesn’t matter. . . . I mean, I guess I could go into Barack’s policies and rattle them off. But that’s what he’s for.”

In Cheraw, Obama belittled the idea that the Clinton years were ones of opportunity and prosperity: “The life that I’m talking about that most people are living has gotten progressively worse since I was a little girl. . . . So if you want to pretend like there was some point over the last couple of decades when your lives were easy, I want to meet you!”

  11. Admit it, you & the other one percenters in America hate our sons & daughters in the military anyway and this is just another excuse for you to badmouth them and threaten and harass their family.

Check out the internet lynching mob Mark writes about in the first post. The people posting the threats sound sicker than any US Marine accused of mistreating a dog that may still prove to have already been dead.

  12. Janet,

Why don’t you weigh in again, but this time with some arguments.
Ne vile fano: bring nothing base to the shrine!

I for one would like to hear your arguments….and not just anti-MSNBC invective.

By the way, Professor Turley really is a good man, knows whereof he speaks, and is respected by a lot of people including, I imagine, some of the people you may listen to regularly on Fox.

Can you say the same for yourself, and if not, does this posting behavior of yours get you there?

Small steps, complete long journeys. Present us, your real self, bright, intelligent, and fair.

  13. Hey Janet – so 99% of Americans are *for* throwing puppies over a cliff? Who knew. And if that is the case, then I’m proud to say that this “one percenter” remains firmly against puppy abuse.

As far as the rest of your screed (something about a pipe and Hitler or something) I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.

Nor, I expect, does anyone else.

  14. Jodee Blanco has written an important book on bullying entitled: Please Don’t Laugh At Us. When she was young, a group of bullies nearly killed her after she defended a boy with a learning disorder from this same group of bullies. The ring leader was given suspension. He came back to school about 10 pounds lighter. It was later that she learned this boy’s father had lost his job. Their family had six kids and he literally had had little or no food for quite some time.
Jodee believes our system of punishment is severly out of wack. She wishes that the principal had sat down with this boy and said: What’s wrong son? She thinks he should have had to work with children who have developmental disabilities so he would come to know who they were. Why? To teach empathy. We don’t value empathy enough in this society and she believes it is one of the most precious qualities humans are capable of displaying.
Our soldiers are killing dogs, children, women and men. We need to know this because we need to stop it. Our young people are subjected to intolerable cruelty, to a level of insanity that mutilates their spirit. We need to get them out of there, right now. We owe them empathy. We owe them better leadership and when punishment is called for, we should have punishments that have some chance of making the person a better human being than they were before.

  15. Moonbat rising: Admit it, you & the other one percenters in America hate our sons & daughters in the military anyway and this is just another excuse for you to badmouth them.

As far as J. Turley, he needs to get a pipe so when he goes on the little watched MSNBC as a liberal hired gun he can look more intellectual. Just as those in the mid thirties smoked their pipes and told America on the radios that Hitler was not a danger to world order and was contained anyway.

Turely, I don’t know how you sleep at night. Your monologues are just left wing spin for the mindless few that watch MSNBC.

  16. “What, you expect me to carry a stray sick dog from patrol 10+ miles back to camp with me?”

Ahm, might have played better in the news than “Marine Throws Puppy Off a Cliff”.

“I was being “creative” that day and decided to throw the dog instead”

Ahm, photography, drawing and writing about your experiences is creative. Throwing a puppy off a cliff, filming it and posting the video to You Tube is something else entirely. But I suspect you know that now.

“Sorry if you can’t understand that”

See, I’m not sorry that I can’t “understand that”. That’s what makes me human and you a sadistic idiot who managed, in 24 hours, to turn the entire world against you, and a good chunk of those same people against the US Military.

And I’m sorry that you can’t understand that.

  17. An apology isn’t going to stop the Internet Lynch Mob.

They are on a mission to destroy him since he is a flawed human being and then proceed to make his entire family live in hell for the rest of their lives.
