When You Care Enough to Send the Very Best Complaint: Conservatives Launch Protest Against Same-Sex Hallmark Cards

The American Family Association has launched a crusade against Hallmark Greeting Cards for its decision to introduce a series of cards for same-sex couples. The AFA wants to start with a write-in campaign.

Last year, Hallmark started offering “coming out” cards and the company will now offer four designs of same-sex marriage cards.

In light of AFA’s campaign, Hallmark should now issue a line of cards for ticked off evangelicals and and religious right voters like “Here wishing that you were not a godless, Satan-driven card company” card.

  1. What was it that Ghandi said? I like your Christ, but I don’t like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ. Jill, thanks for trying to beat back the tide of ignorance but I think that the leaders that the Marthas and dundars of this world listern to really don’t care about homosexuality or abortion. They use these topics to control their little groups of frightened, ignorant sheep by telling them that the big bad world is evil and dangerous. That makes these groups more easily manipulated. (Kinda like Bush and Cheney tried to control all of us after 9-11). It’s all about power. Pity poor Martha. She’s given her soul up to some con man.

  2. Martha,
The saddest thing about you is that I’m a Jew and I know more about Christianity, than you a Christianist. Jesus eschewed violence and you embrace it. The Ten Commandments condemned murder and you approve of it. Jesus ate with publicans (do you even know what they are?) and you
spew hatred of those different from you. Jesus preached love and you preach hate. Your mentors borrow from the Torah only that which reinforces their lame arguments and you swallow it whole. This is so when your clear duty as a protestant Christian is to read your bible to intelligently make up your own mind. Have you ever heard of Martin Luther. Your overall ignorance and failure to engage the numerous religios points made to you leads me to believe that you are not a true Christian. You are merely another right wing Republican, trying to use Christianity to justify your hatred, as you vote for an admitted adulterer and divorcee. Jesus did not believe in divorce.

  3. Martha h, Dr. Laura, etc…

    … modified…

    Dear Martha h,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your [posts], and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

    a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

    b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

    c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

    d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?

    e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obliged to kill him myself?

    f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality? I don’t agree. Can you settle this?

    g) Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

    h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

    i) I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

    j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread. (cotton / polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev.24:10-16) Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God’s word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted disciple and adoring fan

  4. rafflaw,

I agree. But you really need to move out of your parent’s basement!

    Jill

P.S. I’m hoping still it’s “more training, sir” for your wife and your ‘s son.

  5. Josh,
There is no way to “get through” to Martha h because her sole purpose is to cause friction and to spew forth her false statements and spread her Republican neocon agenda. The topic doesn’t prevent her from saying the same thing over and over again. The best course of action is to confront her with facts and reason and then ignore her.

  6. Did you guys notice there is more than one “martha”? Martha h and martha”a”?

Clearly Martha is like the “Alice” model from the classic Star Trek episode “I Mudd”.

There are more than one “Martha” models, and they all coordinate with the central “Norman” model android.

The only thing to do is confuse her with her own illogic until her head implodes.

  7. I wish I knew a way to get through to Martha. Her hatred of homosexuals seems absolute. She hates without regard for the people her hatred hurts. She is not to be bothered with trivial facts. No, for her it is better that we derive our current world view from cherry-picked portions of ancient texts almost without relevance today, contradicted and even trivialized in the books you read the texts from. For her, the absolute is more important than thinking. It is impossible to get through to someone without an open mind.

So, she posts wildly erratic thoughts, purposefully avoiding all requests of her to produce anything other than bigotry. She insults all who dissent. I understand these things. I really do, but to what end? Does it stop with these cards? I don’t believe so. I believe that there is an inherrent danger in allowing this kind of hatred to penetrate a society. These absolutes bring with them the unmistakable scent of danger, and have the unique ability to blind otherwise good people to unspeakable acts of hatred. And they read as such…

    Blacks are inferior.
Women were made to serve men.
    The jews killed Jesus.
    Indians are nothing but savages.
    Disbelievers are infidels.
    and Homosexuality is an abomination.

Martha, please, for the sake of everyone, listen to those around you who challenge you. And, when they do, look for real answers and current examples. Challenge others to do the same. Do not demean yourself by hurling insults in response to debate. Also, note that I do not ask you to change your opinion, only to explain it so that I may also understand. I do not wish you to become another version of myself, only that you and I together may better ourselves.

  8. The 10 commandments were a specific set of laws for self governance given to the Jews by Moses 3 months after their exodus from Egypt.

So unless the H in Martha’s name stands for Hebrew or Horowitz her obsession with them is as peculiar as her obsession with homosexuals.

I’d recommend she try reading the synoptic gospels a few time, then come back and tell us about what “Jesus wants”.

Of course she probably won’t. Most Christians can’t make it past the Nativity.

  9. Let’s just throw those pesky 10 Commandments away or make them more relevant to today.

Some “conservatives” are not only poor parents who need the government’s help to raise their kids, but they also are so ignorant of the Ten Commandments and the Bill of Rights that they think it’s actually not un-American to punish people who worship other gods and work on Sunday.

    These people are fascinating.

  10. Martha, Martha, Martha,

Nothing you can say to her will change any of her views…ever. ‘just go away” is a good indication she, and the millions of closed minded ‘here is what God wants ’cause I talked with him and you can’t ’cause i’m better and smarter and holier so here is what you have to do” crowd are fanatically misguided without compromise. While arguments like these are briefly rewarding in entertainment value for what these hate loving brains will come up with, it quickly becomes sad and discouraging for hopes of peace lovers everywhere.

As Jesus would say (apparently), “Just go away” and “You are a looney tune bred by Hippies”.

  11. Martha, if you are sincere about what you write and not just a goof trying to rile up a bunch of liberals, I think you need to study your bible before you go off on thousands of years of parental sheltering and morality. You seem to confuse Victorian era morality with old testament morality, which was really pretty crude and cruel. I see no evidence of Jesus’s new testament messages in your writings.

Homosexuality wasn’t invented by hippies in the 1960’s, and it’s not going to disappear just because you want it to.

Why do you keep posting off-topic partisan stories? Are you intoxicated or something?

  12. Marthah,
You have been busy insulting people today. As usual, your posts say nothing about the topic at hand. Now you are discussing the Ten Commandments and how they prove that Hallmark must not be allowed to produce a product designed for a specific group of people. I have to echo what Jill and Dave have said and ask where in the Ten Commandments does it discuss homosexuality? While you are straining to think of another insult, doesn’t the Ten Commandments say something about adultery? Why aren’t you condemning McCain for committing adultery? Where in the Ten Commandments or in Judeo-Christian theology does it say that torture is allowed? Where in the Christian faith or the Jewish faith does it say it is ok to insult your fellow human being? Instead of accusing others of committing sins for their actions, you might want to reflect on your actions. The whole glass houses and stones thing is so last year.

  13. There’s a reason that pussfilled bags of hate like the former Rev Falwell, the currently “defrocked” Rev Haggard, and the myriad of other neoconservative preachers out there preach from the Torah, or the Epistles, or Revelations, but almost never preach their sermons based on the 4 Gospels.

That’s because what Jesus taught, and what they teach, are poles apart.

  14. martha h

Let’s just throw those pesky 10 Commandments away or make them more relevant to today

Why is it Neoconservative Christians only seem to focus on Jewish law and ignore Christian law?

    😐

For that matter, why is it Neoconservative Christians never seem to know a thing about the Jewish laws they confuse with Christianity?

For example, here we see Martha trying to imply the 10 commandments said anything about Homosexuality.

    They did not.

Neither Jesus, nor the 10 commandments reference Homosexuality.

    Thats fact.

What Martha is preaching,… well… is something entirely different.

  15. Just winder her up and off she goes. And it all began because Hallmark moved to become more inclusive in the name of marketing, profit and a measure of tolerance.

Dear, dear Martha seems to have opened up her satchel and is throwing out anything she can. Comical and tragic both.
