It’s Hammer Time! Tom DeLay To Dance With the Stars

225px-TomDeLayThis sounds like something from the Capitol Steps, but former Republican House Majority Leader Tom (The Hammer) DeLay will be on this season of Dancing of the Stars. I kid you not.

This will hopefully by the only Dancing with the Stars entry on this blog, but the show has described its newest hoofer as “The former House majority leader is a prominent Republican and conservative firebrand. He was first elected to Congress in 1984, and when Republicans took control of the House, his colleagues elected him majority whip, and later majority leader. His leadership was characterized by his aggressive “grow the vote” method of party discipline in which he never lost a vote, leading the Washington Post to nickname him “The Hammer.” He and his wife, Christine, also served as foster parents and founded a community in Texas that serves as a safe, permanent home for abused and neglected children. DeLay is currently president of First Principles LLC, a strategic political consulting firm based in Washington, D.C., and Houston.” It does not mention that criminal investigation and unethical allegations that led to his departure from the House.

I am personally waiting to see his interpretation of the Swing (Voter), Fox(News)Trot, Line (Item) dance, Repubumba, and the Taxango. Of course, according to prosecutors, he is particularly adept at the Hustle.

  1. Dancing with the Stars’ has a country look to it this season, as it was officially announced this morning that singers Kellie Pickler and Wynonna Judd will be joining the cast of ABC’s dancing completion. Fans of the country genre will be enticed to tune in as well as maybe some ‘Idol’ fans; as Pickler is also the first former ‘American Idol’ star to compete on the show. ..

  2. GWLSMom,

Aykroyd’s Julia is indeed the gold standard. I’m thrilled she liked it too.

  3. Mike,

D9 has a sufficiently happy ending for you if “Invasion” is your standard. You just have to have a semi-flexible definition of “happy”. Perhaps “hopeful” is a better word for the ending.

  4. ‘pol’ dancing, lol.

Here is a Coldplay song with dancing politicians.
    Directed by Mat Whitecross.

me:Julia made it safe for women to do more than open a can or a freezer pack of some processed convenience food.

I’d like to see Streep playing the part of a woman that has to be hard to play and not make a caricature because 1) Julia Childs was such a “larger than life” personality in her own right and 2) she has been caricatured by so many comedians.

me: apparently she really loved Dan Ackroyd’s parody the best. and who didnt?

Unfortunately, my current lady friend thinks it looks like a stinker so I’ll probably catch it on some rainy, HBO dominated Sunday in the future.

me: then take somoeone else. I’m going to see Woodstock and if my squeeze doesn’t want to go I’m going alone

    its ‘Pol’ Dancing
and lets not forget this showcase for the forgotten, the losers and those trying to jump start their way back to celebrity from well-earned obscurity

  7. “Still, opponents of capital punishment relish the idea of Keller, a self-described pro-prosecution judge, sitting at the defense table to fight the potentially career-ending charges.”
    “From the linked news story.”

Shouldn’t her self description be reason enough to remove her as a judge of anything.

    Swarthmore mon,
Saw the 500 Days of Summer and absolutely loved it as did my wife. However, you need to understand that I love bittersweet romantic comedies and tear up all the way through them. I might see District 9, as an SF fan, but only if someone assures me that it doesn’t end like “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” I’m a happy endings of violent movies type of guy. Love the Coen Brothers, hated “No Country for Old Men.” Liam Neeson in “Taken” was an ideal movie for me from that standpoint.

  8. GWLSMom,

I have to admit I’m a bit curious about Julie & Julia. I know, I know, it’s weird since it’s clearly a “chick flick”. I am a Julia Childs fan however. I grew up watching her and my grandmother cook and it’s a large part of how I learned. I’d like to see Streep playing the part of a woman that has to be hard to play and not make a caricature because 1) Julia Childs was such a “larger than life” personality in her own right and 2) she has been caricatured by so many comedians. The story, eh, interesting but not compelling to me. There are very few actress who could pull the part off and make it believable, but even the trailers (let alone reviews) have all pointed to Streep’s fine performance. And I say that not being the world’s #1 Meryl Streep fan. Unfortunately, my current lady friend thinks it looks like a stinker so I’ll probably catch it on some rainy, HBO dominated Sunday in the future.

  10. So when kids(teenagers) see this and they may have a little knowledge about Delays situation, and say as many have said” I Thought He Was In Jail”,and then they ask you.So why should I study hard get good grades,Be a model citizen and a guy like this is on DWTS?What a joke!!

  11. He’ll probably cheat by glueing copies of the Constitution to his shoe soles so he can slide around the floor easier…

  12. Buddha writes: t’s a date movie if your date likes to talk about the implications about humans and repression of the other afterward or likes a good dose of action along with a good story, but if your date is squeamish? Maybe not.

thanks for the review. maybe I’ll go see Julie & Julia next.

  13. I for one will NOT be watching this season. I think that this is the biggest mistake DWTS has made I do not watch TV to trow up.

  14. Dredd,

I hope he learns Jail House Rock down to a Tee and Prison Love would not be a bad one for the Road.

I am surprised you recall this.

  15. He will swing his parther all the way to Oklahoma (where the dem members of the Texas Legislature went to hide from his ilk – Texas Two Step), throw her to the floor and stomp on her (Texas Bristol Stomp), then boot scoot her off the stage at the end so he can get all the attention.

Yep … first place is coming your way hammy (porkoid).

  16. The people who wrote District 9 have been paying close attention to what is going on. Copley’s performance was incredible. Go see Ponyo immediately afterwards!
