Santa Spotted In Micronesia

The good people of Norad are tracking the jolly fat man and spotted him in Micronesia, here.

The Turleys are again celebrating Christmas in Chicago with the entire Turley clan. (Or kids actually double dip and get to celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas). Tonight I will make our traditional Cioppino soup before going to midnight mass to listen to my 82-year-old mother sing with the choir at St. Mary’s of the Lake. I remain on call, of course, for any Christmas torts that may occur.

    Pretty Paper

Oh pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue
Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue
Wrap your presents to your darling from you
Pretty pencils to write I love you
Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue

Crowded streets, busy feet, hustle by him
    Downtown shoppers, Christmas is nigh
There he sits all alone on the sidewalk
Hoping that you won’t pass him by

Should you stop? Better not, much too busy
You’re in a hurry, my how time does fly
In the distance the ringing of laughter
And in the midst of the laughter he cries

Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue
Wrap your presents to your darling from you
Pretty pencils to write, I love you
Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue

    Written by Willie Nelson.

Video created May 22/2008 by MisterCanning.

  2. Gyges wins! That is clearly the Virgin Mary at the right side of the video. I’ve got goosebumps.

  3. One of the most beautiful melodies was written by Willie Nelson and best sung by Roy Orbison called ‘Pretty Paper (Pretty Ribbons of Blue)’

The first video is an instrumental and the young lady did a perfect job with the accompanying photomontage of Christmas memorabilia.

This might be even better that Ms EM’s animal video.

  4. Well, from a ol’ countree bumpkin who once done a few twirlls with them danyance hall girls in them honkey tonks, here’s a song based on those bad holidee ‘spirits’

  5. Ms. EM’s posted video caint be topped…unless I cain find something better (doubtful)nor no one else.

  6. Or if you’re into a little hipper Christmas music… Strayhorn’s arrangement of The Nutcracker Suite is always good.

  7. JT,

I took the opposite approach. At our home growing up, Christmas Eve was never complete without us BEGGING to open just one present, of course my parents always said no. Now that I’m in a position to make my own traditions, I open a present Christmas eve, and then call all my siblings to brag about it.

May I suggest A Pause For Mr. Claus?

    1. Great selections. Keep the nominations coming and we will post the best tomorrow!

  8. This may seem like a strange selection. It’s certainly not a traditional. To those of you who know me, strange should not be a surprise, but I think the sentiment of this song is something Jesus would have approved of: again here at the Turley Lounge, back by request! The Manualist!

  9. JY:

I am doing my own little “Feast of the Seven Fishes.” It’s shrimp, bacala, calamari, scallops, and mussels in some homemade fettuccine for our little gruppo familiare. I should add you Cioppino. Let me know how it turns out.

    1. Mespo:

I would be happy to send the base receipt but it is different each year though it always has mussels (in shell), shrimp, red snapper, claims, and cod. It was my father’s tradition and growing up we hated it. We always serve beef and a traditional English meal on Xmas itself, but it was the soup on the eve. After my Dad died, it fell to me to keep up the tradition — a considerable irony. However, over the years, I have now become as dedicated (and my children as miserable) with tradition.

  10. To Jonathan and his family, the leader of our Merry Band and to all my friends, the usual suspects, I wish you a wonderful and joyous Christmas, including those atheists among us. May you all spend this weekend snuggled in the collective bosom of those you love and who love you.

This to me is the best Christmas Song ever:

  11. After my mother died I don’t go back to Illinois for holidays.I only go in the summer to visit the rest of the family.

  12. Prof. Turley,
Welcome back to Illinois and our beautiful December weather! Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukah. We are heading in to Skokie to spend Christmas Eve with my mother and the rest of my family. I hope the roads are decent. Have a great Holiday.

    1. Rafflaw, driving around last night on last minute shopping was a bit dicey with the freezing rain. However, I just got back from Treasure Island for the soup ingredients and Christmas meal items and it was pretty much just cold rain. With the exception of my van dying (the kids left the back light on AGAIN), it has been largely uneventful with the help of AAA!

  13. AY It is so cold in Texas today the islands look good. Previously went back to Illinois for Christmas but now kids come here.

  14. On the Otter hand. Why can’t the islands have Christmas too

  15. Those NORAD people do some good work, eh? Looks like the big man’s already hit a bunch of islands…he’s visiting Australia at the time I’m writing this.

    1. I love It, Elaiine. We may need to get nominations for X-Mas videos for tomorrow. This one clearly makes the cut! Any other nominations?
