Pro-Life and Camera Shy: Obama To Sign Ban On Federal Funding of Abortion

After holding a large public ceremony for the signing of the health care bill, President Barack Obama is barring cameras when he signs the executive order needed to secure the votes for the narrow passage: a ban on federal funding of abortion.

Rep. Bart Stupak and his colleagues will attend the signing but no cameras are going to be allowed by the White House. The thirteen members are all pro-life Democrats and the White House has decided that the public should not witness the event.

By the way, Stupak was suddenly given an over $720,000 grant for airports in this district shortly before his vote, here. This has led some to question whether the pro-life order was the only condition of his support.

  1. Buddha said “Throughout most of human history, if it couldn’t survive outside the womb without the normal assistance babies require – it’s not a human yet.”

    Buddha,

Until recent history, we didn’t have the ability to verify that it was indeed human life. The current scientific facts regarding biological life and human DNA were not available when Roe v. Wade was decided.

Justice Ginsburg thought abortion was a means of controlling an unwanted segment of our population.

“Frankly I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of.”

Until recent history, abortion was illegal. I doubt it was because of anything other than considering it was likely human life.

  2. Duh, I’m sorry if this has been discussed by you before and I may be side-tracking the discussion, what were your feelings about Terri Schiavo or like cases?

What about cell lines, like the HeLa line, that are human cells and DNA? It seems by your definition that any ‘live’ human cell/DNA has the same human rights as a sentient being.

  3. Tootie:

“I’d make it illegal in a second.

That “fully-vested” human already did have the right and control over the direction of her life: before the sex. She through away that right and now wants us to ignore that she is going to snuff out another human life so she can have a do-over.”

You do realize that the Bible does not consider an unborn child a human life, don’t you?

  4. Queen said “These people should rightly be called “anti-choice,” since their desire is to eliminate women’s perogotives, and their concern is wholly focused on zygotes and fetuses.”

When you can’t even bring yourself to call it what it is (Human Life), I don’t have much sympathy for your position. Go get your nipples pierced. Go get your tramp stamp. I will defend your right to do so. When you involve another human life, it no longer remains just your life.

  5. Throughout most of human history, if it couldn’t survive outside the womb without the normal assistance babies require – it’s not a human yet.

  6. John,

If I murdered you in the privacy of my home, would you call it a matter of personal privacy? If I discussed killing you with my doctor, because you were the cause of my high blood pressure, would my discussion with him be privileged?

The “ending” of human life for personal convenience is wrong. Be it by war, death penalty, or abortion.

When the Pro-Choice crowd has the courage to call abortion what it is (The ending of human life for personal convenience) and can look me in the eye while stating such, I will then consider it to be an honest choice.

  7. Blind,

It was probably contextual. If you just said, “Fuck!”, our beneficent host would probably not have minded. He is a staunch supporter of free speech (although he does like to keep excessive profanity to a minimum). However, if you were telling someone to go fuck themselves or perhaps a barnyard animal? Well that’d be your problem right there.

I get pretty rambunctious at times, but of the very few times I’ve been edited out the very first (and the first of only two times I’ve ever posted angry) was also the only time I’ve lost my cool and told someone exactly that. This is even though the clown had it coming to him but it brought to the forefront the only rule of this salon the Prof chooses to assert: the civility rule – refrain from ad hominem attacks. All of my subsequent edits were from crossing that line in the name of making a joke which is my assumed risk in being one of the resident comedians.

During some of our adventures here, it has been pointed out by many regulars but Vince Treacy said it best when espousing the one unspoken rule, “The first rule is JT makes the rules. If you have a problem with that, see the first rule.” While all of us have fun here on the playground, it is indeed the Prof’s playground.

There is also the possibility of technical misadventure. Sometimes the spam filters will grab a post (or poster) for seemingly random reasons. It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen. Electrons as so small, it’s easy to misplace one occasionally.

By the way, nice mauling you gave there. Even though the theocratically deranged are a fairly easy targets, it’s still fair sport fishing. Good show.

  8. To Queen,

How about changing “pro-choice” to “personal privacy.”

  9. I do wish the term “pro-life” could be dropped and never again used as a descriptive term for people who want to ban abortion. Most people who call themselves pro-life are not pro-life at all, considering most of them will support wars of choice, allowing people to die for lack of health care and the death penalty. These people should rightly be called “anti-choice,” since their desire is to eliminate women’s perogotives, and their concern is wholly focused on zygotes and fetuses.

  10. Oops. Did I say something I shouldn’t have? Never had a post removed before. I guess I thought I was somewhere else.

Joe Biden said the f-word. I thought I could too. A thousand apologies.

  11. tOOTIE is not Gerty:

Tootie is a capitalist and Gerty is a socialist although a religious socialist. Tootie is a religious capitalist.

    RC does not equal RS.

  12. I do not practice any organized religion. I believe in a Creator, but that’s about as far my religious beliefs go. I am Pro-Life. Though unborn, the fetus is human (as can be verified by DNA) and is alive (meeting the criterion established for biological life). Human + Alive = Human Life

I can accept abortion for rape and when the life of the mother is in physical danger.

  13. Has Gerty reappeared mespo?

I was thinking the same thing myself. The Nom de Plume has been around for awhile, however the possibility of this was brought to my attention just yesterday.

  14. I can’t remember the last time I saw a bill signing on TV….the abortion issue is not resolved, this is 1 small codicile to the acual bill.

    Perspective.

So this was about Healthcare. Who want’s to derail that acheivement by throwing in a flaming fetus?
