All Too Real: Saudi Religious Police Crackdown on MTV Reality Show

The Saudi religious police have cracked down on a popular reality show on MTV that follows the lives of three Saudi youths. Saudi officials have alleged that the three are guilty of the crime of “openly declaring sin” by criticizing Saudi restrictions over the segregation of the men and women and other complaints.

MTV’s “True Life – Resist the Power, Saudi Arabia” showed how the three youths were coping with daily life in Jeddah as they pursued such interests as heavy metal music.

We previously saw how the Saudi sentenced a television figure to death for telling fortunes (here and ordered flogging for a journalist who discussed his sexual exploits (here).

However, approved television includes advice on how to beat your wife, here.

A decision whether to proceed to trial will be made within the week.

  1. thanks for the link on “how to beat your wife”. i was a little unsure on that one.

  2. In Saudi Arabia, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” applies to *everything.*

  3. “Reality” and “television” have very little to do with one another.

Just like “civilized” and “Saudi Arabia” have very little to do with one another.

  4. I wonder if Tony Perkins has studied at the Saudi Religious Police Academy.

  5. How nice it would be if MTV aired this program state-side, instead of the mindless drivel it currently passes off on our youth in the name of “reality.”

  6. Since I don’t care for these shows. I probably shouldn’t comment, except to say that if this floats your boat, enjoy it. Leave me to my History or ID Channel.
