Report: Cardinal Praised Bishop for his Willingness To Go To Jail Rather Than Reveal Information On Priest Rapist

The Pope continues to face allegations of his prior knowledge of abuse by clergy. However, the most striking story in the article below is how Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos allegedly heralded a bishop for his willingness to go to jail rather than reveal information about a priest accused of raping a child.

Here is the passage that stood out:

Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, a Colombian who for 10 years was in charge of the Vatican department that supervises the clergy, wrote in 2001 with gushing approval to the Bishop of Bayeux, who went to jail rather than give French authorities information about a priest who had raped a minor. “I congratulate you for not turning in a priest to the civil administration . . . I am delighted to have a colleague … who … has preferred prison to turning in his son-priest.”

If true, that is an astonishing example of the cultural hostility toward these victims.

An invitation for the Cardinal was withdrawn recently due to the allegations against him.

There is NOTHING Biblical or within the teaching of the New Testament which allows for covering up these crimes.

All we have to do is substitue “church” with “BP” or “Citicorp” or any other big for profit business. They all act the same.
Same with exchanging priest or minister with CEO or large share holder of board memeber of 1st VP. They are all selfish, greedy, power hungry and at best amoral.

  2. It is comforting to know that so many Christian ministers interpret the admonition to be a shepherd to their flocks, to mean the kind of shepherd who falls in love with the his ewe’s as being a proper treatment of his flock and a protected privilege under God’s law.

No wonder all those icons of Christ have such huge erections. They gave themselves a free pass to access their entire congregations.

Ok, but you’ve got to read the whole thing-not just the parts you like. 🙂

I’m not sure why you bring up a biblical text having to do with two warring peoples (the people David attacked started it) on a thread having to do with child molestation. But, not matter, I’m willing to comment as best I can.

If you want to see raising texts about rendering justice I refer you back to Anonymously Yours who wrote this comment earlier:

“Can we place these folks [the priests?] in cauldrons heated up with molten lead, to see whats left after they are dunked once or twice? Of course feet first.”

    David would be jealous, perhaps?

  6. Its really unfortunate that there is no eternal punishment these assholes will suffer. Some sort of horrible place that they would be forced to spend all time in suffering and degradation.

  7. History repeats itself over and over again. Everybody thinks they’re new to the game but nothing is new and the game is as old as mankind itself.

  8. “That’s a nice religion you’ve got there, Cardinal. Be a shame if somethin’ were to ‘appen to it.”

Well maybe nothing from the New Testament, but “biblical?” Hardly-take a look:

And David and his men went up, and made a raid upon the Geshurites, and the Girzites, and the Amalekites; for those `nations’ were the inhabitants of the land, who were of old, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt. And David smote the land, and saved neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel; and he returned, and came to Achish. And Achish said, Against whom have ye made a raid to-day? And David said, Against the South of Judah, and against the South of the Jerahmeelites, and against the South of the Kenites. And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring them to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell of us, saying, So did David, and so hath been his manner all the while he hath dwelt in the country of the Philistines.
    ~1 Samuel 27:8-11

Seems like a pretty effective cover up to me.

You really ought to read this book –it’s fascinating. Maybe we’ll start a blog book club!

    Obviously, I see some parallels.

NASB © “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe to stumble, it would be better for him if, with a heavy millstone hung around his neck, he had been cast into the sea.

    Mark 9:42

  12. I guess there’s no reason to say that he’ll be spanking the bishop soon, alone naturally.

Can we place these folks in cauldrons heated up with molten lead, to see whats left after they are dunked once or twice? Of course feet first.

  13. Is there any better argument that all this religious horseshit is a con game? If these “Holy” people, so prominent in the church, can’t or won’t abide by God’s law, (and even help to protect those that would commit one of the WORSE offenses kmown to man) what does it say about religion in general. Indeed if anyone knows the benefits of being close to God or the consequences of falling into temptation it would be these people who’ve studied and devoted their lives to religion. How many more Ted Haggards, Jim Bakers, etc. need to be exposed before we realize “WE WERE CONNED”?

  14. Hey, Herr Pope!

You do know you just confessed to a preference that your clergy aid and abet felons, right?

Remember Matthew 19:14! Jesus wanted children to know the Kingdom of God. And it says in 1 John 4:16 that “God is love.” But nowhere – NOWHERE – does it say “God is a child molester or endorses cover ups of heinous crimes inconvenient to the Roman Catholic Church’s public image.”

Stuff your hypocrisy, you outmoded windbag. Protectors of child molesters are as bad a child molesters proper. End of story.
