Hour of Power [Grab]: Robert Schuller Thrown Out Of Crystal Ministries

The Rev. Robert H. Schuller, 84, has been voted off the board for Crystal Cathedral Ministries, which he founded over 50 years ago. This follows an earlier move to oust his son, Robert A. Schuller. The ministry is in debt and rife with family divisions, including one over a required anti-gay marriage pledge demanded by his daughters.

The church has filed for bankruptcy and “owes about $7.5 million to unsecured creditors, many of whom are vendors for the cathedral’s ‘Glory of Christmas’ pageant.”
The demise of the church follows a long-standing fight with his daughters — another bizarre case of a religious institution run like a family business. In this case, Schuller found himself at odds with his daughters who seem to have created a modern King Lear for the televangelist world. “How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is To have a thankless child!” (King Lear, 1.4.312)

While Schuller designated his son to take over the church, the son was tossed out by his sisters and Sheila Schuller Coleman took control of the ministry. One of the issues was the son’s opposition to changing the church’s format and Coleman’s insistence that choir members sign a covenant acknowledging Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and the belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Her father opposed the pledge and has long been welcoming to all in the church. Schuller’s daughter, Carol Schuller Milner, supported her sister and they forced removal of her father.

As was said in King Lear: “Ingratitude, thou marble-hearted fiend, More hideous, when thou show’st thee in a child,Than the sea-monster.”

  1. The only thing shuller had to do is to go back to the Bible and stop to mix religions who don’t accept Christ as sun of God, and stop to accept sin in the church. I heve respect for his grand son who is preaching Christ today as the only way to God and as the only Saviour. The others, I must thing on Salomon.

  2. Good for the daughters, who were trying to stand for the Bible,,,something that has been lost in our modern times.Pastor Bobby better get out of the Reformed church or he will go down as well,,cause the Reformed church is against Israel..as well as many modern apostate churches. Gen. 12:3 teaches that God will bless those who bless Israel…But. he will curse those who curse Israel..many churches invite sodomites. Gays in the congregation. Which we should all sinners are welcome,, but people should repent and turn from sin…that’s the difference. These churches are not calling anything sin anymore. Read gal.1:8 and revelation 22:18-19

  3. i have been fortunate to be able to listen to Dr Schuller’s uplifting messages for years. Every Sunday I have taken something positive from them that has helped me through the week. Never mind the religion, listen to the message. Robert Schuller Junior came across hollow and unconvincing, and when the daughters took over it became a farce and I stopped listening.
But hooray, now that Bobby has taken over, a new positive light shines on the ministry. Young Bobby will surely surpass his grandfather in effectively conveying positive and uplifting messages to those who care to listen. He is a lovely young man and quite inspiring. Poor chap, had to suffer the indignity of moving out of the ‘Big House’ into the ‘barn’, but nonetheless his undoubted charisma carried him along and will help him do very well.

  4. I cannot believe some fo the comments regarding scripture that is about having one wife – well that probably means that they only have one at a time unlike the harems of days past….does not refer to one not being able to serve because they have been divorced….but think what you will. And about women not preaching you need to read more than what you use to defend the position that women can teach but not preach – well where is the line drawn between teaching and preaching. Jesus sent out women so I think not much has changed, He still sends out women today.

  5. Churches have become corporate businesses. You cannot serve two masters God and money. They have little interest in God or humanity. Jesus as well as Bhudda were beggars. Today churches have CEO earning millions. I often wonder how would they explain themselves in the presence of God. Maybe they don’t really believe in God, it is just means of earning money, popularity and a great boost of their egos.

Many years ago I worked for a disability service and a young client of ours wanted employment in administration work. So I approached a church whose income ranges from two to five million a weekend to assist. The process was shocking. I had to go though was as you can imagine not easy. It ended up with the board of directors saying they cannot assist as they do more than enough for the community. I never read in the Bible Jesus ever saying this. Two weeks later I received a call from the Pastor who asked me to come immediately. I thought that it was a change of heart, only to learn from him that they are applying to the Government for more money and they need to prove in writing they have a partner ship with a disability service. So this man had the hide to ask me for a letter acknowledging a partnership. This is one of the biggest churches in the country.

  6. When money becomes the focus and grabbing a daily business…then the end will be there. Now the Catholic Church will take over the complete building and will start to become a world-wide TV church…. and will address lots of people…. What has been the true believe?

    1. Churches have become corporate businesses. You cannot serve two masters God and money. They have little interest in God or humanity. Jesus as well as Bhudda were beggars. They depended on others to feed them. Today churches have CEOs earning millions. I often wonder how would they explain themselves in the presence of God. Maybe they don’t really believe in God, it is just means of earning money, popularity and a great boost of their egos.

  7. Certainly will miss your ministry. Wonderful father and Son Ministry.
May god bless yourself, your wife and wonderful speaking and dedicated Son. From Canada.

  8. Rev. Schuller sr. has had on going Alzheimers for the past few years and needed to retire. He had already chosen his son Robert to replace him but the sisters and their husbands interfered and when Robert jr. did not agree they convinced their confused father to have their brother leave. It is a sad story but God was in the works when Bobby Schuller was voted as a their pastor. He is a terrific young man with always a positive sermon and faith centered. They will be going to a new building and I pray somehow they will be able to broadcast the services. It is not about a building but about sharing the good news of the gospel and worshipping together.

  9. Jesus said, your enemies will be that of your own household, but he still expects us to love them, he also said, bless those who persecute and hate you and I will bless you, he said do not judge, and he who does not forgive will not be forgiven, so I believe that true to the man I think Robert schuller is, he is forgiving his family and leaving the judgement to GOD, he will have a very special place in heaven if that is how he is dealing with it, Jesus also said I go to prepare a place for you, in his case if he is the man of integrity that I believe him to be, his place will be wonderful, beauty for ashes.

When someone goes through something as painful as this, and they survive it through God’s grace of strength , healing and restoration they are referred to as saintly, let us not get caught up in critical judgment, that is reserved for God, let us pray for ALL of them, the last word belongs to God, he said , my word shall not come back to void, it is truth and effectual.

  10. The star of the show is gone, the replacements are not up to snuff. Oh my, and I thought that Jesus Christ was the star. I was wrong. In all protestant churches is protest. Against what? THE church. Jesus only set up one. And the gates of hell have not prevailed against it in 2000 years. Oh by the way I have watched Hour of Power for over 30 years. Been there more than once, and like both Sr. and Jr. and Jr. Jr. But always needed more. The Holy Eucharistic. Though Shiella was a whole nother story. And yes women cannot be preachers, priests or bishops. Oh sure just go against Christ and do your own thing, cause your in protest against THE church Christ established. Oh Martin Luther, what have you done……….

  11. Christian Sermons at most times are great. I went to a few that were just critiquing other groups as well as religions. I think to create a higher vibration, create hope, make people take a positive path it is very good. There are many things missing in these sermons, the truth about what lies beyond this life. What are we all aiming for, what is beyond heaven or hell. Is that the end or are we all evolving to the highest state. Is God a man, woman, energy. Does God travel? If God truly is Omnipresent what form does God take? If God is energy is there place for any other forms of energies? Is God only good or allows the Godself to play all roles? There are many questions and no one seems to answer. Are we just learning at these sermons a primary level of understanding? Is there a higher level of understanding that we are not ready for and beyound that an advance level of understanding. I think Lord Jesus did say according to the Bible that there were things that He could not speak off as people were not ready to know. Are we that people? Many Preachers and priests alike have no understanding beyond what they read. It seems they get their understanding from within a closed box. I love Jesus, His words, His life, but it stops short for me and does not give me the answers I really want. I do not believe that this life ends begins at birth and ends at death. I do not believe that we go to heaven or hell and stay there forever. I do not believe that God decides our destiny. I do not believe that that the Bible is a rule book but a guide to a better way of living. I believe that there is much more to life than what meets the eye. I believe that if we search deep enough God will guide us to those who know. Reading Peter Richlieu books called the ‘Soul’s Journey’ was one of the best things I have done. Many leaders love money more than God and they stand on platforms telling us how to love God.

  12. Do you mind if I quote a few of your articles as long as I provide credit and sources back to your blog?
My website is in the very same niche as yours and my
visitors would really benefit from a lot of the information you provide here.
Please let me know if this ok with you. Thanks!

  13. Dr Schuller and family, my prayers are with you all and we as the public don’t really know the root causes of the problems you are faced with.Nevertheless, as I have read practically all Dr Schullers books and hearing most of his sermons over the years, it is conspicuous that God has called him for His purpose. I just think that the storm that has come against the ministry is God sent—not to destroy, but to rebuild as the season has changed for the ministry. Jesus is building His church and has come to visit the foundations of the church that has been tampered with. A skilled surfer must know how to ride a wave, but must also know when to get off a wave.
I also think that the congregation need to included in the decision making as they are the greater voice–without a vision the people will perish and without the people the vision will perish. Members of the congregation need to have a public meeting with the leadership and voice their hearts.
Question: Where are the son-in-laws that seem to be silent in the matter that their wives are in control of?
Also wisdom says: In the counsel of many there is safety. How about calling for help from anointed, wise men of God that can help solve your problems. Dr Schuller has many friends in ministry that has helped him the past like Dr Yongi Cho who baptised him in the Holy Ghost in the time of great pain in his family tragedy.
    God bless,
    Rev Dr Robert Ross,South Africa

  14. I have watched the Hour of Power for 40 years. Loved it and the great music. I was in Los Angeles for Music Convention when the Crystal Cathedral was officially dedicated. I went in at noon and saw how beautiful it is. I even played the piano in the old church and hoped one day to play that million dollar organ. I am a retired cathedral organist. I love the books and have ordered some for my children. The Hour of Power will fade away I am afraid but it did so much good and the soul keeps it. Am sending my children books. God bless you all. R. Gibbens Robichaux of Thibodaux, La.

  15. I missed your services so much Dr Schuller. I am not a very religous person but I loved to watch you on tv each week. Listening to the music and to your message helped me a lot. We have similar troubles in my family. I have not been able to see my granddaughters for five years. Jealousy is a very bad thing but I have a wonderful grandson who fills my life with joy. He has autism and needs our care. These things are sent to try us Dr Schuller but I
know your faith will help you and I hope to hear you again soon.
Love to you and your lovely wife. Barbara

  16. So sad. I have had encouragement for years from the sermons and books of Robert H.
The late Norman Vincent Peale had been my source of positive thinking before I had heard Hour of Power. Fortunately I don’t have to rely on guidance from the offspring. Of course the new testament is a marvelous source of positive thinking!I
It seems the whole family needs to practice what’s been preached by their father.
