Dallas Safari Club To Auction Off Right To Shoot An Endangered Black Rhino

220px-Sniperscope300px-Doué_21_06_2010_14_Diceros_bicornisThe Dallas Safari Club has come up with its own version of the Gourmet Club featured in the hilarious comedy The Freshman. However, rather than pay to eat one of the last animals of an endangered species, the Dallas Safari Club is auctioning off the right to shoot one of the most endangered animals in the world: a black rhino. The auction is being done in conjunction with the Republic of Namibia to sacrifice one of 5,055 remaining rhinos to raise money. Thus, ostensibly to raise money to protect the rhinos from continued illegal hunting, Namibia and the Club are advertising the thrill of shooting of an endangered rhino.

Ben Carter, the executive director of the Dallas Safari Club, insisted “First and foremost, this is about saving the black rhino.” It is the same logic of destroying a village to save it. Here is Carter’s logic:

“There is a biological reason for this hunt, and it’s based on a fundamental premise of modern wildlife management: populations matter; individuals don’t. By removing counterproductive individuals from a herd, rhino populations can actually grow.”

However, even if you accept the concept of killing animals to save them, the draw appears a basic one: be one of the few people who can claim that they killed an endangered rhino. That right could go as high as $1 million.

It is not clear why Carter’s approach is not also used for orphans or art preservation. Be the only person to shoot up a Monet with all of the money going to the Lovre Museum.

If the desire is to preserve the rhino population, why not just give money to preserve the population?

Notably, the Humane Society is circulating a petition to try to prevent the hunter from being able to bring back the carcass of the kill. The desire to help the rhino population might decline a bit if there is no trophy of the kill.

  1. Bron,

Thankfully no…. But I know a number of folks that are…some are actually pretty good people….

  2. is it an old animal, is it sick? Why not cull it and make some money if it is on its lasts legs anyway. If I was in charge of the herd, I certainly wouldnt allow a healthy animal in good condition and at the prime for breeding to be taken.

Give the hunter an aging bull to make room for some younger animals to breed.

Seems like a winner if you are the hunter and the state, sucks for the individual though. But then who cares about individual animals if the greater good is served by the sacrifice of one?

  3. most of the animals at the Dallas Safari Club would be dead or almost extinct if it weren’t for the Dallas Safari Club Maybe obummer should put the rhino on welfare.

  4. The lack of factual truths being brought to light here, and the flurry of fiction based, emotionally saturated, B. S. analogies and conclusions – a.k.a. Fairy Tales, is only, in my experience, matched by Criminal Lawyers routine lying.

The sound management of the herd of Humans of course, would be to remove the most counterproductive(Criminally behaving) humans that are threatening the welfare of our Human herd, sending them to incarceration(a Zoo like facility?) or the Happy Hunting Grounds as required.

The handling is “apiece-a-Horse” as I see it?????

  5. Will they let the Rhino out of his cage before the hunter shoots him?

Hunting for food /YES/ Hunting for sport /OKAY/ maybe.

Hunting because you think it makes your little gun bigger, INSANE/

  6. no hunting or stalking. no pitting brawn and intellect over a brute, just killing? Do they put the shooter in the asylum as a zoosadist right after the kill?

  7. I agree with Michael…. I would donate to a shoot one of the soulless jerks that would want to shoot a Rhino…… I consider those people to be UNPRODUCTIVE…… we should thin the herd to help our HUMAN population…..

They should DONATE this Rhino to a zoo where people could learn more about how to PROTECT the Rhino’s…….. that would bring MORE money in the long run…. and would not be a soulless act…..

  8. I agree with Michael…. I would donate to a shoot one of the soulless bastards that would want to shoot a Rhino…… I con side them to be UNPRODUCTIVE…… we should thin the herd to help our HUMAN population…..

  9. I hope somebody with a LOT of money and a soul enters this so they can win and NOT shot the Rhino….

This makes me SICK that somebody would even want to shoot one of the FEW remaining Rhinos……

PETA members apply for the lottery to hunt wolves in Wi. and then don’t use them. Now, wolves are killing pet dogs in peoples yards. So there’s that. Wolves are great animals, on of my favorite. And I love animals. I watch every National Geographic doc. I have NEVER hunted, although I have no objections to regulated hunting. I’m mainstream, except maybe for here.

Is your best friend black too? 😉

  11. As long as you contribute $$ to the cause, you can; abuse your spouse/partner to help others from being abused. abuse drugs so there are fewer drugs for others to abuse. This logic can be used in many ways. Brilliant!

  13. So some rich a-hole is going to pay to be able to shoot something so that nobody else can ever shoot one of them again?

  14. Well clearly the painting example is inappropriate because famous paintings can’t be replaced. The idea of removing counterproductive individuals is valid and I completely agree. As a first step to embracing this philosophy I recommend the obstructionists in the US House of Representatives. Their removal will improve the whole population.

  15. How much for a permit… to shoot the hunters???? Remember folks, humans are the lowest form of life on this Planet…. Have no expectations of people, and you’ll never be disappointed…
