Afghan Security Guard Kills Three Doctors At Hospital . . . Other Doctors Then Save Attacker’s Life In Surgery

medical symbol220px-AK-47_type_II_Part_DM-ST-89-01131Two American doctors — a father and a son — were killed by an Afghan security guard at a Kabul hospital this week as well as a third doctor. The guard also wounded two others, including an American nurse. The Taliban and extreme Muslim clerics have called for attacks on foreigners, including those who are in the country to feed and heal Afghan citizens. What is most striking about this story is that, after gunning down innocent doctors and nurses, the life of the guard was then saved in surgery at the very same hospital by doctors that he did not shoot.

It is a contrast that is both tragic and poetic. Religious extremists have convinced Afghan militants and turncoats that even killing healers will please Allah and guarantee them a place in heaven. They seem to accept that perversity with question, even in a place where these doctors are healing their fellow countrymen. Five doctors were walking toward the hospital to heal people and this guard could only see targets in a holy war — tickets to paradise.

It is a scene that shows how entrenched religious extremism remains in the country and how such views cannot be altered even in the presence of humanitarian work by these doctors. Health care and charity workers remain a prime target for extremists.

The names of this father and son have not been released but the tragedy is unfathomable for this family — or the family of the other doctor. They died in the highest pursuit of the medical profession in seeking help the suffering in a war-torn nation. That must be of some solace for the family but it clearly will not be a substitute for the loss of these loved ones.

We should have learned from Alexander the Great.

That is the old curse of “those who cannot learn.”

Dredd – did you just buy a copy of Bartlett’s Quotations or did you find it on the web?

    Yep.

  3. Out of Afghanistan now. Let them continue to do what they have efficiently done for a thousand years – kill one another.

    1. We should have learned from Alexander the Great. Afghanistan is no place to fight.

  4. It is forbidden to kill therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.” – Voltaire

  5. bfm, ditto for the Cheezus freaks who want to kill those two billion Muslims.

I am not worried about the Christians who know Jesus from Cheezus.

  6. ” Should all Christians be judged by his acts?”

I certainly do not advocate judging all members of a group by the acts of a few. But it is also important to realistically evaluate the adversary. Part of our problem is that some of the most extreme acts are not outliers but the considered policy of community leaders and religious elders. That fact makes those actions very different from the individual acts of a McVeigh.

That difference is important to understand because the most appropriate way to deal with acts that reflect the policy of a community may be very different from the most appropriate response to an individual.

Having said that, I will emphasize that it is my hope and belief that most of the world’s nearly 2 billion Muslims are not radical extremist who believe that shooting doctors is a good thing.

  7. So way past time to have left that hellish country and never return. They need to be left to their own devices. I pity the women and children though. They are an example of a civilization that has gone backwards, soon they will reach the stone ages, all for a religion.

  8. Yep, especially the Cheezus lovin’ military terrorists I mentioned in my comment up-thread.

They have the most guns and boom booms.

    Praise Cheezus and prey.

  9. Terrorism is terrorism. Hard to terrorize the military, easier to terrorize civilians.

  10. Doctors take a lot of shit, much of it deserved, but they take that Hippocratic oath very seriously.

PS The nicey-interfaithy stuff earlier in the Quran is abrogated by the later stuff calling for death of the Infidel, etc. Mohammed himself called for the slaughter of hundreds of Jewish men and the enslavement and sexual enslavement of their women. I’m an atheist, but I can get behind the Jesus stuff — feed the poor, turn the other cheek. Mohammed was a looting, raping psychopath.

  13. “Religious extremists have convinced Afghan militants and turncoats that even killing healers will please Allah and guarantee them a place in heaven.” This is right there in the Quran, which is considered infallible and unchangeable as the word of Allah. There are many Muslims who have no clue that the Quran says this and the religion is based on death or conversion of the Infidel, but Islam itself is the problem. To deny that out of political correctness or ignorance is also the problem, as it spreads the mistaken view that Islam is just like any other religion – just another flavor (vanilla to Judaism’s strawberry and Christianity’s chocolate). It is not. It is a totalitarian system masquerading as a religion, and it demands the death or conversion of non-Muslims and the installation of the New Caliphate and life by Sharia law. Pint-sized genius Howard Bloom has an excellent book detailing this, The Mohammed Code.

  14. Bruce, that was uncalled for. Remember Timothy McVeigh claimed to be a Christian. Should all Christians be judged by his acts?

    1. Carol – what Tim McVeigh did was payback for the Christian acts of the the government at Waco. I think Tim felt he had already turned the other cheek. And like a good Christian, Tim took his punishment. He did not try to hide from it or run away.

  15. Justice Holmes : I too am very angry – I am in awe of the humanity of the doctors who ‘repaired’ the gunman – that says so much about the rest of humanity and SHOULD show the Muslim extremists, by contrast, what they are actually believing and doing – but I do not have much hope of that – they are brainwashed and do not think for themselves.
As I say on lots of my postings all over the place, this ‘religion’ is not worth following and is a plague on the planet.
Sorry Muslims – you are worshipping the wrong deity if he teaches you such viciousness. If you followed your real heart and your personal knowledge of what love actually is – you would know what is right.
I have such a fear of what will happen in Afghanistan once they are on their own again and s-o-o-o-o thankful I was born and live in the West, which while far from perfect, at least can be persuaded to be fair and do the right thing most of the time.

  16. What a tragic situation our warriors and those like these find themselves in. How very sad. I hope they were Christians so their families can find comfort and peace.

I am reminded of when the Bible says “…you will hear of wars and rumors of wars…all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom…these are the beginning of sorrows…lawlessness will abound….And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:6-14, (part).

Thank the Lord for HIs hope. Thank-you, Jesus.

  17. I am not sure I see the big deal here. American or Allied doctors treated German POWs during WWII and N. Koreans during the Korean War. You treat the wounded. You do not care whose side they are on.

  18. Ah the religion of peace and love strikes again. I could not do what those doctors did but I applaud them for it. The gentle followers of Allah only seem to know one way of doing “good” killing anyone who disagrees with them or is different. I know I know all Muslims are not like that but there are enough of them who are!

My sympathies go to the families of the doctors wo were killed.

President Obama when will will stop pouring money into this hell hole? Sorry but I am angry!
