We often discuss the disconnect of religious fanatics who rape or beat or kill women and girls in the name of morality. Often such abuses seems to be condoned by governments like Iran. However, after a series of acid attacks on women for not being properly veiled, the Iranian government is actually investigating and denouncing the attacks.
The government’s sympathy only go so far. Under the Sharia-based law in Iran, women must wear the loose fitting hijab that covers their heads and necks.
The attacks have occurred in Isfahan and General Hossein Ashtari has confirmed at least four acid attacks. Others say that there are at least 13 women chemically burned for being “badly veiled.” Other attacks have occurred in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India where the women are accused of “sullying” their family “honour” by committing “indecent” behaviour.
While the government has insisted that it will investigate, others have insisted that it must also punish women who are not sufficiently covered. Various women have adopted thin veiled or more shapely clothing to the outrage of religious Iranians. Iranian MPs have written to President Hassan Rouhani to demand that police increase enforcement of wearing of the veil. Once again, these legislators have little faith in convincing people to follow their Islamic values. Instead, they want to coerce them to comply to their values and call it a moral act.

I prefer to think you are experiencing psychological discomfort, and simply trying to blame it on the mac and cheese. That is a good thing! The first step in fixing a problem. . . 🙂

SWM and Doc, humility just didn’t jump out at me when I researched the group.
than I can’t type without glasses. trying to cook and type at the same time.
than Dallas. Also, I would rather live in New Orleans that Dallas. The catholic influence is moderating and not nearly as harsh as the fundamentalist culture in northern Louisiana and Texas.
Squeeky, Wrong again. Texas’s black population is not very high, and I went to the catholic church with lots of mexicans. Liked mass in spanish. I have lived in northern cities with much higher black populations the Dallas. You are not on your game today.

Are Oathkeepers into ‘humility’? I keep wondering how it keeps wandering into the conversation.
@swm
No, I think the Bible Belt is just racist code talk for the Black Belt. That is what you are really escaping from. All those blacks and their preachers, and the Mexican and their priests. And all that Trayvon Martin stuff is just you psychologically compensating for your Inner Klanswoman.

Annie, I did not know that Oathkeepers considered themselves to be consensus builders. They are on the far far right.
” I was defending your position as everyone else on here denys the fact that there is a problem with abuse in the United States. ”
Really? Please enumerate who is denying that there exists abuse (I presume you mean of women) in the United States. Who is the everyone that you speak of?
Olly, he who casts the first stone….you know the rest. So much ‘holier than thou rhetoric today’. It appears that when liberals are strong, conservatives don’t deal well with it. The liberal voices are back on this blog and I can see its not sitting well with some.
Annie – the liberal voices are back? What? Did Gene close his site down? I have yet to see a liberal argument that came from a rational base today. It was all emotional or snark.
@Olly
I agree with you. Attempting to bring reasonable arguments to a conversation is mostly a waste of time. People, even the smart educated ones, hold their opinions on an emotional level, not a rational one. In fact, I have seen the degree of education is inversely proportional to an ability to learn new facts or think new thoughts.

I think we have “gone around the horn here” and pretty much covered any sub-population of human today. Can we just now say “bad people are bad people no matter what color they are or wear on their head?” I know that might end recreational bickering though…
Just a thought…
Allen West is not an Uncle Tom. He is just crazy.
Ben Carson is not an Uncle Tom. He is also crazy.
Herman Cain is not an Uncle Tom. He is just,,,,,um…..inept.
maxcat, God bless you, and the fact that you walk the walk, firstly, does not surprise me, and secondly makes me respect you even more than I already did. Talk is cheap, and we got a lotta cheap talkers here.
“IMO, the best way to handle that kind of stuff is to clobber them with facts, humor, and sarcasm, because reason isn’t what got them to that position in the first place.”
Squeeky,
That only works if they are open to alternative viewpoints. This past week has proven to me blogs are largely ineffective in building consensus. JT provides interesting stories which I read and often learn something new. Then I step into the discussion and I have to go back to recall what the original topic was. It’s really a shame because there is very likely truth from both sides to reasonably consider yet the humility to do so is missing.
“For example, how come when leftists have something to criticize, the South is always the Bible Belt, and never the Black Belt??? I think it is fair to ask that question.” Squeeky With the exception of New Orleans, most black people in the south are bible thumpers, too. Therefore it is the bible belt. I think DFW is referred to as the buckle.
@swm
Hmmm. You said, “I will talk about the bible belt as I recently escaped.”
Are you sure you aren’t happy because you escaped the Black Belt??? Because you probably went to a place where there is a whole lot more white folks than there are black folks. Maybe you are really a racist deep inside, and just haven’t come to grips with it???
Because as I have pointed out, your side is pre-programmed to see the Bible Belt, and unable to see the Black Belt. That is why the whole bunch of you needs to start examining your own beliefs and quit parroting whatever talking points crap is handed down by your party shills and hacks.

Happypappies,
I’m not new to the blog. I’ve been around since 2009. I also served as a weekend blogger for Res Ipsa Loquitor for nearly four years.
Then why did you act like I was quoting your link when I obviously was making a point. I have been here 6 months and never have seen you.
@MaxCat06
I think I am making some pretty valid and cogent points here. For example, how come when leftists have something to criticize, the South is always the Bible Belt, and never the Black Belt??? I think it is fair to ask that question.
I also think it is a valid criticism that many of those same leftists don’t call it the Black Belt because that does not fit their agenda, and also might expose their policies to criticism. That is kind of the same thing we saw with Trayvon Martin. His death becomes a crusade, while the daily murder of blacks by blacks is but a hiccup among the Democrats. That is why Black pipsqueaks like Sharpton and Jesse Jackson get a respectful reception by white Democrats, while conservative Blacks are roundly criticized as Uncle Toms. IIRC, one guy on MSNBC, whitey Larry Donaldson(?) or O’Donnell (?) even accused a black conservative as not being black enough.
IMO, These are serious points that need discussion, but only one side seems to add anything meaningful to that discussion. And it ain’t the liberals and Democrats.

I will talk about the bible belt as I recently escaped. Squeeky, For the most part the black preachers are fundamentalist, also, so their preachers are screaming about hell fire and damnation, too. They share their punishing god with their white fundamentalist counterparts.
