“Bad Hijab”: Iranian Women Reportedly Being Attacked By Acid For Not Being Properly Veiled

150px-muslim_woman_in_yemen220px-Hydrochloric_acid_ammoniaWe often discuss the disconnect of religious fanatics who rape or beat or kill women and girls in the name of morality. Often such abuses seems to be condoned by governments like Iran. However, after a series of acid attacks on women for not being properly veiled, the Iranian government is actually investigating and denouncing the attacks.

The government’s sympathy only go so far. Under the Sharia-based law in Iran, women must wear the loose fitting hijab that covers their heads and necks.

The attacks have occurred in Isfahan and General Hossein Ashtari has confirmed at least four acid attacks. Others say that there are at least 13 women chemically burned for being “badly veiled.” Other attacks have occurred in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India where the women are accused of “sullying” their family “honour” by committing “indecent” behaviour.

While the government has insisted that it will investigate, others have insisted that it must also punish women who are not sufficiently covered. Various women have adopted thin veiled or more shapely clothing to the outrage of religious Iranians. Iranian MPs have written to President Hassan Rouhani to demand that police increase enforcement of wearing of the veil. Once again, these legislators have little faith in convincing people to follow their Islamic values. Instead, they want to coerce them to comply to their values and call it a moral act.

  1. I am not sure why this thread has turned personal yet again with the same folks, but I ask that people return to the merits of arguments and not attack those making the arguments as a basic condition of mature discourse.

    1. Elaine – it could be that you have been notable by your absence the last couple of weeks.

  2. happy, Your humor is based on a lie. I did not say, imply or intimate, ALL rape victims are smokers. I said most are not wealthy elitists like so many feminists. And, as you may or may not know, smoking is much higher in lower socioeconomic groups. I am careful to use words like “all” prudently, apparently you are not. Having worked w/ many rape victims, helping put the perpetrators in prison, I NEVER found humor in it. I am prudent w/ “never” as well, but it applies here.

    1. Nick, I was not being humorous. Since I have been an in house victim sleeping with the enemy if you will, I took your comment very personally. I do not agree with it still as I think that lots of rape violence goes unreported in the so called “upper classes” as a pay off to the life style as in my 3rd marriage which took me 8 years to escape from. You must realize that I had lots of friends in society that confided in me that stayed in their situation. I did not. It wasn’t all the time. So they said. I can’t speak for them.

  3. SWM, I hope you and others take just a few minutes to quickly review the aforementioned 4 civil threads and take some notes. Just sayn’.

  4. SWM, I am merely pointing out certain dynamics. And again, I was addressing a point between Squeeky and Olly. We have had discussions privately about toxic threads and this was a good opportunity to continue that discussion. I did not complain. Whining and complaining about FAIRNESS is the purview of others. I’m just a blue collar guy trying to keep up w/ all the intellectually superior folk here.

  5. You sparked a discussion but maybe you are complaining because of the outcome.

  6. And, I forgot the Maximus dog thread. Civil. Take note who has not commented. Is this incendiary, SWM?

  7. Actually, this thread has been reasonably civil, yet has had spirited debate. Best of both worlds.

  8. Again, Look @ the civil threads and take note who are NOT there. Quite edifying.

  9. nick, Just responding to your comments about toxicity. You appeared to be flame throwing.

  10. “You started it” makes this Turley Grammar School. I often call threads Turley Middle School when they get petty. But, that comment is grammar school. I am on the 3 aforementioned civil threads. Those are the ones I was speaking of, so you seem to be the diversionary practitioner w/ that comment. But, I don’t want to contribute w/ the tit for tat. And, I did not “attack” western feminist, I called them to task for what I see as elitism and insularity, giving examples of why I thought so.

  11. Nick, You know something, Nick. You started the diversion by attacking western feminists. Own it.

  12. Olly, It doesn’t take a licensed PI to determine why threads turn toxic. There are always threads that are not. Just look @ the Alabama pastor, Chinese pollution, Mississippi posts from today. Discern who has not commented and note all 3 are civil. Voila!
