We often discuss the disconnect of religious fanatics who rape or beat or kill women and girls in the name of morality. Often such abuses seems to be condoned by governments like Iran. However, after a series of acid attacks on women for not being properly veiled, the Iranian government is actually investigating and denouncing the attacks.
The government’s sympathy only go so far. Under the Sharia-based law in Iran, women must wear the loose fitting hijab that covers their heads and necks.
The attacks have occurred in Isfahan and General Hossein Ashtari has confirmed at least four acid attacks. Others say that there are at least 13 women chemically burned for being “badly veiled.” Other attacks have occurred in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India where the women are accused of “sullying” their family “honour” by committing “indecent” behaviour.
While the government has insisted that it will investigate, others have insisted that it must also punish women who are not sufficiently covered. Various women have adopted thin veiled or more shapely clothing to the outrage of religious Iranians. Iranian MPs have written to President Hassan Rouhani to demand that police increase enforcement of wearing of the veil. Once again, these legislators have little faith in convincing people to follow their Islamic values. Instead, they want to coerce them to comply to their values and call it a moral act.

Ah you bleeding heart, Nick. Those victims need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and get back to work. Put away that sissy pain and heartbreak. What’s wrong with you are you soft? And that counselor? What’s her problem? We’re capitalists and she needs to be making all the money she can without wasting her time helping those weaklings who cant help themselves and just “move forward.” She’s probably looking for a government handout. And I bet Obama is to blame for both those sexual assaults and wasting our hard-earned tax dollars on some pinko victims programs.
Hey it’s always fun to be the conservative in the room and just gripe. Anybody can do it and all you have to do is put away your humanity.
Mespo I bet you really look like that don’t you

happy, My wife just got back from a Session meeting @ our local Presbyterian Church. She is clerk of Session.
You are absolutely correct that victims can intuitively sense empathy. The woman who ran the Rape Crisis Center was a rape victim. One of the sharpest, bravest, committed people I have ever known. She had the means to make a lotta money in the private sector. But, she worked 60 plus hours a week running that center w/ way too little support.

happy, It is up to women to take the lead. Rallies. Feminists love rallies. Make it like the old days w/ that huge convention feminists had in the 70’s in Houston. I am an optimist and believe that if led, Western women would follow on these war crimes against females. This is a huge political opportunity for women. I’m amazed they can’t come out the box and see it. This is a win/win. It is righteous and can catapult women on a national stage. It’s still a man’s world. Women need to think BIG. This is big. Some here think I’m talking trash. But I swear under oath I am not.

Wow. Those last two posts blend perfectly. If it was an accident that is amazing. If Dredd is that quick on the uptake with Shakespeare….I am in awe.

We have real problems here in the US. NO question. But, when there is a humanitarian crisis it means all hands on deck. The Middle East is horror for ALL WOMEN. I think western women should focus all their attention to their sisters being slaughtered. It is an opportunity for Western women leaders to step up and make these women THE ISSUE. It’s my opinion. Obviously people disagree. I think they’re wrong.
It is my opinion too and one that I tried to make earlier in the thread before it got derailed by side tracks, snark and personal attacks.
Feminists could really step up and concentrate on the real horrors of what is happening in Islamic AND other areas of the world. Instead of focusing on our relatively smaller problems and fighting with each other over trivialities. They don’t. They won’t.
We can’t be a shining light on the hill when we spend most of our time bitching about the imperfect quality of the light.

Sharpton, Jackson and the other guy have never held elective office nor are they running for president.
Jackson and Farrakhan are old, old, old news The Right seems to enjoy dusting them off and calling them bogeymen.
Sharpton? Minor character. As has been pointed out, MSNBC is not much of an operation.
docmadison – just because Jackson, Sharpton and Farrakhan are getting older does not mean they have lost their influence. Sharpton is some kind of advisor to the WH.

I Understand that. What would you suggest that we do. Since you have the organized mind for it and I don’t. 🙂
