Creationist Finds 60 Million Year Old Fossils In His Basement But Maintains That It Proves Nothing

imrs.phpWe have previously discussed the struggle that creationists have with the daily disclosures of scientific research, particularly the discovery of fossils and other items that are dates in the millions rather than thousands of years. It is hard to maintain that the Earth is less than 6,000 years old given the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. However, Canadian Edgar Nernberg has shown just how easy it is to live in denial. Nernberg was not just confronted with a fossil from over 60 million years ago, but he actually found it in his basement. However, Nernberg does not think God is trying to tell him something. He maintains that “There’s no dates stamped on these things” and it proves nothing if you just reject isotopic dating and basic geology.

The University of Calgary will unveil the five fossils this week and the results of the dating process. These fish lived just after the dinosaurs were wiped out on Earth and are important evidence of the explosion of new species in the aftermath.

Nernberg to this credit recognized the find right away and preserved the fossils. Indeed, he is seeking cast of one of the fish so he can put it on display at the creationist museum.

  1. If Mr. Nernberg had seen a cross in the sky formed by the refraction of light by ice crystals, I’m guessing he would have loudly announced it as a miracle to one and all.

  2. I need to know when the First Day was– how many years ago from now? Then I can calculate the Eighth Day. Was the First Day a day when the Earth cooled off enough for life to thrive? So the planet existed but was too hot for a living thing to handle. If we have global warming then when will it be too hot to live here? These are questions which inquiring minds need answers for.

  3. Squeeky-Paul

Velikovsky has been dismissed because his theory that Venus broke off from the Sun and collided with the Earth in the form of a comet doesn’t work with modern physics. But, his research into how disparate peoples seem to have the same or similar philosophies and stories is very scholastic. When studied in a scholastic manner, chronologically and understanding how inter connected the peoples around the Med were, much of the Old Testament came from previous theologies and philosophies, and most if not all of the New Testament was taken from that which threaded the existing religions of the day.

The borrowing of accepted beliefs to create a new one is the surest way to usurp the old ways. This is most apparent in early Christian Art and Architecture. Almost everything if not everything that was already there as part of the Greek and Roman Architectural language was simply relabeled Christian. The cross replaced the bust of the Emperor. The basilica became the church and sometimes was still called a basilica. Egyptian, Persian, Greek, Roman and other motifs gradually became Christian motifs. Their value was already there as a shared memory, just like the floods, earthquakes, and other stuff.

    1. Squeeky – there is an excellent book by Velikovsky named Oedipus and Anknaten. It compares the Oedipus myth to the story of Anknaten. Fascinating. The man was a scholar. Studied under Freud.

  4. The Magic of the Moon – Who Put It There – What Are The Odds?

    Jason Bellows –

“While Earth has had its share of ice-ages, the gravity of the moon has acted as a gyroscope, keeping the Earth’s axis steady at 23.5 degrees and sparing us the wild environmental changes Mars faced. This long-term stability has given life a chance to arise amidst a cycle of regular seasonal changes.

A case can also be made that the tides have been invaluable to the evolution of life on our world. The sun alone would cause some tides to occur, though they would be far less than those the moon creates.

It’s not only water being tugged by the moon’s gravity. Perhaps the moon helps keep Earth’s core and seas warmer than they would otherwise be. Since the moon circles the Earth once a month, and the Earth is spinning a full turn at a much quicker 24 hours, the moon’s gravity is creating drag, hence friction, as it pulls at Earth’s surface. This causes several things to happen: first is a perpetual morphing of the crust–like the amateurish kneading of bread–that contributes a clumpy, broken mess that we call plate tectonics.

Even Earth’s rotation is slowed by virtue of the Moon’s pull. Without the moon, the Earth might rotate much faster, causing a more turbulent atmosphere, and thus unending gales of life-hostile, skirt-blowing winds.

If the unlikely set of circumstances which brought forth our moon are as rare as they seem, perhaps ours is the only such planetary system in the entire, vast galaxy; or perhaps in our unfashionable limb of the universe. But every once in a great while, when the time is right, two protoplanets who love each other very much can touch each other in a special way, and make life together. Without that magic, astronomical ritual, we certainly would not be here.

  5. One thing is certain and that is the never ending attempts at explaining it all. Even though he has been dismissed somewhat by the supposed ‘in the know’ types, Velikovsky’s ‘Worlds in Collision’ still lays out why most stories all seem similar. The world went through cataclysmic events and peoples all around the world have registered these events in similar ways, given that they are all human. Floods, fires, volcanos, earthquakes, etc are all part of a shared past. Handed down by verbal story telling until they were written and formed the basis of the world’s religions, these events were used to transcend the helpless state of a person who would be lucky to make it thirty years.

All this can be explained as to how it happened, why it happened, and more recently who was responsible. However, the big question will never be answered, or will it. We could, someday, find out that we are all part of some scientific experiment, like an ant farm. Then there will still remain the even bigger question; who gave the kid the ant farm?

It all comes down to those that need to believe and those that don’t. Those that do have the advantage of an endless supply of stories and interpretations to tickle the imagination and intellect. Those that don’t sort of have to just hummmmmm.

In the end, what seems to becoming more and more apparent is that you don’t need stories to understand how to exist together. In fact stories seem to be what is causing most of the problems.

  6. “Q: How do Pastafarians believe our world was created?
A: We believe the Flying Spaghetti Monster created the world much as it exists today, but for reasons unknown made it appear that the universe is billions of years old (instead of thousands) and that life evolved into its current state (rather than created in its current form). Every time a researcher carries out an experiment that appears to confirm one of these “scientific theories” supporting an old earth and evolution we can be sure that the FSM is there, modifying the data with his Noodly Appendage. We don’t know why He does this but we believe He does, that is our Faith. ”

  7. And it is also true that there are a great many beliefs, including Young Earth Creationists, Old Earth Creationists, Intelligent Design, etc.

  8. I recommend this site. Although it hawks a different God than the God mentioned here, this God is pretty awesome! It is told that he deliberately puts fake information out about the old age of the earth. That’s just part His strategy that believers should accept!

  9. Squeeky. I’m afraid I’m going to have to object. “Innocuous” is opinion.

  10. I had a friend who was a Creationist. She firmly believed that all earlier hominid species were simply a lot of birth deformities.

I just cannot relate to having such a shaky faith that any scientific discovery would shake it. My faith does not suddenly dissolve at the discovery of gravity or our solar system. But I see God in science and beauty in discovery.

Why would Creationists think that God made his creations unable to adapt or change, yet live on a constantly changing planet?

The Bible is not a science book. If it spent its time explaining the double helix structure of DNA, its writers would have been immediately stoned to death and we would have never heard of it. It is full of parables and metaphors and allegories.

    1. Karen S wrote: “Why would Creationists think that God made his creations unable to adapt or change, yet live on a constantly changing planet?”

Actually, virtually all creationists believe that God made his organisms able to adapt and change. They all believe in what the evolutionist Stephen Jay Gould called microevolution. What creationists are really skeptical about is macroevolution and the mechanisms for it. Macroevolution is about speciation events and how the diversity of species we observe today came about from a simple organic ancestor.

Although many people deny this truth, Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection simply is not sufficient to explain macroevolution. The fossil record simply does not support it. There is much more evidence in the fossil record of organisms changing very little over millions of years than there is evidence of speciation events.

Consider, for example, that there is another bony fish called known as a Coelacanth. It was thought to be extinct for 65 million years. That is 5 million years older than these fossils we are talking about in this thread. But then somebody caught one off South Africa in 1938. Since then, more than 200 have been caught. Up until 1938, the scientists included Coelacanths as a missing link in the evolution of terrestrial organisms from aquatic fishes. Of course after finding them alive, they were quietly removed from the textbooks and are talked about only as a Lazarus taxon and living fossil. Their history in the fossil record goes back 360 million years! That is a lot of time for an organism to have very little change. None of the vertebrates exist in the fossil record beyond 600 million years ago. How did all the vertebrates evolve so quickly and then continue unchanged for so long? These are the questions creationists ask but the evolutionists avoid.

The real problem for a Bible believer (who are not the same as a creationist)* is that their Bible teaches a plan of redemption. Their theology is that there was no death before Adam, but that by Adam’s sin, then death came upon all the creation. Evolution simply cannot work in that kind of a model. All mechanisms of evolution require reproduction and death to work. The Bible also records every single ancestor of Jesus Christ back to Adam. Jesus is the redeemer, the one who is meant to put things back to the way they were before Adam sinned and caused death. Jesus lived just 2000 years ago. So unless you are going to create intellectual suicide and speculate that there are a huge number of missing people in those genealogies, evolutionary theories just don’t fit into the Bible believer’s paradigm of the world.

*Note that Bible believers and creationists are not the same thing. There are creationists who have no compulsion to believe in the Bible, and there are Bible believers who are not creationists because they do not believe the Bible should be interpreted in a literal way.

  12. Egyptian Basement Containing New Old History?

“Dr. Carmen Boulter revealed an astounding new discovery in Egypt found using a state-of-the-art, satellite-based deep penetrating radar scan. The scan reveals 82 enormous chambers on two distinct levels at great depth near a largely unknown pyramid south of Cairo. The history of the deep underground site stretches from Herodotus in 450 BC to an excavation in 1881 by William Flinders Petrie. There are four distinct layers– with the first layer Roman, the second layer Ptolemaic (Antony & Cleopatra era), while the two lower, older layers, remain mysterious and go down 60 feet, and 130 feet. The deepest layer may be 100,000 years old.

The find is 107 acres– the equivalent of 81 football fields, with five of the rooms bigger than Olympic-sized swimming pools. “I don’t think it was at the surface and all that sand accumulated over the top over time. I think it was meant to be underground from the get go,” she surmised. If you look at the scan, the chambers and the two deeper levels are not connected, which suggests they may be from different time periods, she noted.

Boulter theorized it’s possible that ancient ET visitors used the underground chambers to initially orient or acculturate to our planet.”

  13. It’s not the progressive left that buys into the Young Earth myth, lol. It’s much more so the religious right.
