Our next adventure in Alaska took us from Denali to Whittier, Alaska. We will be kayaking in Blackstone Bay in the morning. On the way to Whittier, we stopped in the cute little town of Talkeetna before pushing on to the Kenai Peninsula. It was a great drive and reaffirmed why renting a car is the ideal way to see Alaska.

We spent much of our sixth day in the Denali National Park where we saw a huge elk with magnificent antlers and a mother moose with their calf at a lovely lake. We decided to tackle the Savage Alpine Trail which is a strenuous and demanding trail up a steep mountain overlooking the Savage River. While challenging, it was breathtaking.

On our second day at Denali National Park, we decided to tackle the challenging Mount Healy Trail. This is my second time on Mount Healy, one of the highest mountains in the park. It is spectacular but high challenging due to the sharp ascent. It is however worth every exhausted muscle and sore knee. After weeks of rain, the skies cleared showing Denali in all of its splendor .

On our fourth day in Alaska, we started with a last great breakfast at the Snow City Cafe. We then drove to Denali National Park where we will finish the day white water rafting with the outstanding people of RaftDenali (more on that later). We made a stop at a ramshackle rural store run by Mike Carpenter. It can easily be mistaken for a pile of discarded odds and ends but there is a genius to the place which sells everything from old washing machines to a severed human hand.

Our third day in Alaska began after my speech to members of the Alaskan Federal Bar Association in Anchorage. After the speech we set out to drive to Girdwood along the incredible highway with its massive snow capped mountains and broad marshes and mud flats. We visited Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Center and then drove to the Portage glacier area.

The next couple of weeks, I will be blogging from Alaska — one of my favorite places on Earth. As a lifelong hiker and outdoor enthusiast, Alaska is simply unequaled anywhere in the world for its immense and wild beauty. We arrived late Sunday night and experienced the gorgeous wilderness from the air. Flying into Alaska is always awe-inspiring as the seemingly limitless wilderness unfolds before your eyes. We spent much of the first full day biking and enjoying the city.

We spent our ninth and final day in Buenos Aires as we began the trip: enjoying the Feria de San Telmo, the massive outdoor fair where vendors sell paintings, leather product, tango lessons, antiques and more. Indeed, we opted to return to our favorite restaurant of the trip: the basque restaurant Sagardi, which is located just off the main street of the fair.

I spent the seventh day in Buenos Aires in truly classic form: I was mainly in restaurants. After my lecture to journalism students, I went to a farewell luncheon with the wonderful faculty of the Univerisad del Salvador. I then walked around the city and ended up at the most popular pizza restaurant in the city.

On our sixth day, we walked around the city and looked at some of the many leather shops. We also continued to daisy-chain restaurants and cafes in this food-centric city. We joined our friend Laura for a great day in the city.
We spent the fifth day in Buenos Aires walking the streets and enjoying the sights and sounds of the city. After I dealt with the Supreme Court cases issued that morning, we went for a stroll and ended up at one of the oldest cafes and eventually the tomb of Gen. Jose Martin. We also met up with an old friend from Chicago (originally from Buenos Aires) and went to a restaurant just listed among the top 100 in the world. Yes, more eating. Argentinians love to sit and talk and eat and drink until the wee hours of the day.

Our fourth day in Buenos Aires was a wild contrast that began with the home of Eva Peron and proceeded to the Museo de las Armas Teniente General Pablo Riccheri. We also went to one of the truly unique restaurants in the world, a fusion of Jewish and Argentinian cuisine. It was truly a day of contrasts and fusion in art, food, and history.
Our third day in Buenos Aires featured great food and arguably the single most impressive cemetery in the world, La Recoleta. We walked around Buenos Aires and then ended up at a wonderful local steak house with Argentine friends for a late night dinner. It was a perfect day. On our second day in Buenos Aires, we spent much of the day at the extraordinary Feria de San Telmo, a huge outdoor fair where artisans sell everything under the sun from antiques to paintings to Tango lessons. It was a huge amount of fun that we capped off with a late lunch at a Basque restaurant and an evening stroll filled with dancing and music. Our first day in Argentina on Saturday was a blast. Upon arriving in the morning in Buenos Aires, we set out with friends to explore the Caminito, the ” little street”. Caminito is part of the area called La Boca and is one of the most iconic parts of this beautiful city. It is full of great food, colorful homes, and Tango dancing.
