A Saudi court has ruled that the marriage 47-year-old man to an 8-year-old girl — upholding the controversial decision in December. Sheikh Habib Al-Habib rejected the mother’s effort to secure a divorce for her child.
Since the mother is separated from the girl’s father, the court ruled that she is not a legal guardian who can seek such a divorce. The father arranged the marriage to settle his debts and insists that the girl’s husband promised not to consummate the marriage under the girl reaches puberty. That could be as early as nine years old.
Recently, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia endorsed marriages of girls as young as 10.

Marrying young girls off, whether in payment of a debt or to form political alliances with a neighboring tribe, has been in practice for thousands of years. It was a process that had practical applications in primitive society and avoided the horrific results of inbreeding. But there is no excuse for it in a “modern” culture in the 21st century. We don’t live in the 7th century anymore and human culture has evolved to become more sensitive to the rights of the powerless. But this, apparently, does not apply to Islamic states like Saudi Arabia. Women in that country are being held hostage by bearded old clerics who are clinging to archaic beliefs out of fear of losing their influence in society. Change or progress, no matter how small, is the enemy. This is why they hate Western culture so much.
Can’t the relatives raise the funds to pay off the debt and redeem the child? Is finances even the nature of the debt, or is it something else? Would that God would afflict everyone involved in such unholy messes with an affliction worse than death. Then they could think of nothing but the pain. The abusive father, the so-called husband, and that unrighteous judge should all burn in a living hell. It is the practice of pedophilia; nothing less.

It most certainly is Bush’s fault. Obama is not a big oil man who took our military from their legitimate goals of punishing the 9/11 terrorists (who all but one of which came from Saudi Arabia) and instead used them to steal the resources of a third country that had not attacked us in any way, shape or form. A third country that, in fact, acted as a bulwark against the Muslim extremism that controls Saudi Arabia. A third country that was stable albeit a dictatorship and squarely opposed to ANY terrorist group as they presented just as big a threat to Saddam and they did to anyone else, maybe more so. Saddam would have killed Al Quaeda withing Iraqi borders with stunning quickness and efficiency. Bush was. Obama’s family isn’t hip deep with the House of Saud. Bush’s is. Obama didn’t and doesn’t have a personal issue with Saddam. Bush did. Who started the illegal war in Iraq? Bush did. More accurately, Cheney and Exxon did via their puppet Bush. Obama wasn’t CIC then. He couldn’t have retasked the military away from Afghanistan and the logical second target of Saudi Arabia even if he’d wanted to. But Bush could have. And didn’t.

I think that is a very good line to draw.
I have a niece just about this age, so I find this ruling especially appalling. The idea that this child’s father was allowed to sell her to settle his financial problems is sickening.
There is a line of demarcation between respecting religious and cultural diversity, and adhering to priciples that apply universally to humanity. The use of children as chattel, the rights of females to equality and freedom of non-predatory sexuality are examples. Add to that the basica such as the right for food, shelter and health care and one is presented with what I think should be human norms, that transcend cultures and religions. The Saudi decision has no justifiable basis for a sound society save that of one that condones insane behavior.
Obama won’t dignify the UK Royal Queen with a bow – which is appropriate as President do not bow to anyone – but can somehow feel justified bowing to a human rights abusing corrupt Royal of the House of Saud – beause he is Mulsim. They (Sauds) need us more than we need them. Obama is naive, foolish, short sighted, wrong headed philosophically and a bad leader for the great USA. He sees our best days behind us as having been some imaginary vision of when we lived ‘at peace with the world and each other and the planet’. When exactly was that? When did countries ever hold hands and sing Kumbaya and truly help each other out when it was not in their best interest? When has Socialism EVER worked? I agree that this is illegal, inexcusable, and horrific but disagree that it is confined to Islam. The bible has incest and rape as prominant features in its stories. Many a christian has advocated and done the same as this man. The abuse of children is bound to happen in any religion that promotes hierarchy and calls for the obediance of followers to authority, both to god and his self chosen representatives on earth.
