Sighting The Bible: Military Contractor Found Adding Biblical Citations to Weapons

ABC has a truly bizarre and disturbing story. Brian Ross reports that a military contractor has encoded hidden New Testament Bible passages on high-powered rifle sites. The contractor is Trijicon, which apparently confirmed the practice.

The biblical references appear as, in one case, 2COR4:6 — an apparent reference to Second Corinthians 4:6 of the New Testament, which reads: “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

The company received $660 million under a contract to supply 800,000 sights to the Marine Corps. It has other contracts with the Army.

U.S. regulations prohibits proselytizing of any religion. Moreover, such additions to military equipment should violate the contract which presumably did not ask for biblical citations with gun sights.

The use of biblical citations will only reaffirm the view of many that the U.S. went into Iraq and Afghanistan on a “crusade.” This view was magnified by Bush calling its a crusade and later citing Biblical passages to convince other leaders that this was a worthy, if not divinely ordained, effort. His subordinates appeared to keep Bush in a Biblical mindset by adding prominent quotations from the Bible in reports on the war, here.

In my view, this raises serious legal questions that should result in a review of this contract. As a minimum, the contractor should have to pay for the removal of the citations. We have to able to trust contractors not to carry out their hidden or religious agenda as part of a contract with the American people. Just imagine if these were citation to the Koran. If the company wishes to proselytize it should do so with theocratic governments. Perhaps the Swiss Guards that the Vatican need a few sights and citations.

  1. See its like me pointing to an instruction in my Chilton’s manual on how to replace the PCM module on new car, and you countering it by citing an instruction from a manual for a Model T.

The Chevy hadn’t been invented yet.

Thus your reference to the instructions for replacing the PCM module by referencing an automobile manual which was printed prior to the invention of a PCM module is moot.

It doesn’t mean anything. Its a distraction.

“Since then the “liberals and progressives” in this blog have done nothing but insult my beliefs and the faith of millions and lie, twist and distort the scriptures of which they are so clearly ignorant of.”

    Hey everybody-mr independent is back!

“You’re either the most ignorant cuss on the planet, or the biggest liar I’ve met in a long time.”

Well, I don’t think that the preamble to the Constitution is the law of the land so I can’t be THE most ignorant cuss…

    “One more time troll.

The question was over whether PAUL wrote instructions in the Book of Romans ordering Christians to be killed for transgressions.

I pointed out he did not.

Then troll number 2 showed up and tried to pretend he held their coats,”…he did hold their coats…” when in fact, that had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TOPIC.”

    So what? You’re misattributing quotes.

“That was something he did as SAUL, prior to his conversion.

What that means is, SAUL could not have had anything to do with the BOOK OF ROMANS.”

    Jack Cashill-is that you?

    “Get it troll?”

I don’t answer to troll, that was my pre-conversion name.

“If not I’ll repost my same answers until your thick skull absorbs them.”

Take it up with God, he made me this way.

  3. I hope I’m not going too fast for you.

Tell me if you need me to slow down.

  4. Its a red herring.

    A distraction.

You attempt to discredit a comment of mine on the meaning of a given scripture by pointing to something that has nothing to do with the meaning of that scripture.

    Get it?

  5. Trying to discredit my position on the authors meaning of a particular scripture, by citing events long before the scripture was written is not applicable.

Its like me saying to you that you put oil into the crankcase of your engine and you responding by saying “My horse doesn’t need oil”.

Of course your horse doesn’t need oil.

No one was talking about your horse.

And of course Saul before he became Paul persecuted Christians. Did you think I did not know that? Everyone knows that. Kids know that.

But it has nothing to do with the meaning of a Scripture he wrote many years later.

  6. Since we were talking about a passage Paul the Apostle wrote and whether it was an instruction to kill errant Christians for their misdeeds against the teachings of Christ, then your trying to discredit my position that Paul was not ordering the Christians to kill errant Christians for given transgressions by talking about something he did BEFORE writing this passage is not applicable.

    See?

    Do you see now?

  7. We were talking about whether or not a passage he wrote in the Book of Romans was an instruction to kill members of the early church who commit certain sins.

    Do you understand?

Are you with me so far?

  8. “From a Christian standpoint-he was reborn, a new person.

From an Earthly standpoint he was Saul DBA Paul.

The guy who wrote the epistles was the same guy who held the coats” -Pinandpuller

What else can I say to you. You clearly don’t possess the capacity to comprehend what you’re saying.

We’re not talking about whether or not Paul and Saul were the same physically.

We’re not talking about whether or not Paul and Saul were the same man spiritually.

We’re not talking about whether or not Paul and Saul were the same man intellectually.

    Do you have that now?

Can you retain that much for the moment?

“Pudpuller I think I’ve danced to enough of your sidetracks.”

Now I know you lied about being a Baptist.

“When you have something of value to add let me know.”

I wish I could buy you for what you are worth and sell you for what you think you are worth.

You’ve been great. I’ll be here all week.

  10. Pinandpuller:

He has a blind spot to this Saul/Paul business. He doesn’t seem to want to answer the question about Saul having been Paul. It actually is a little freaky.

Both you and I seem to agree that Paul’s life as a Christian is atonement for his life as Saul. 30%< seems to think the 2 are entirely different men (i.e. not biologically equivalent beings). I honestly dont understand his reluctance to admit biological sameness. Maybe he knows something about cloning in the 1st century AD that we dont.

“The statement of mine you addressed was refuting an early scripture of PAUL THE APOSTLE.

In doing so I pointed out that PAUL never ordered anyone to be killed.”

From a Christian standpoint-he was reborn, a new person.

From an Earthly standpoint he was Saul DBA Paul.

The guy who wrote the epistles was the same guy who held the coats. It doesn’t matter how you refer to him.

“Your response ignored the fact that we were discussing “PAUL” in the “EARLY CHURCH” and instead twisted it to be something he had done BEFORE he became a Christian.”

He persecuted the EARLY CHURCH before conversion and expanded it AFTER he became a Christian.

    “Thus your comment was dishonest.”

    Nope.

    “As you are being now.”

    Afraid not.

  12. Pudpuller I think I’ve danced to enough of your sidetracks.

When you have something of value to add let me know.

  13. Its amazing how my original comment is blurred and obscured by distortions, misdirections and outright lies.

So I’ll repost it now that the trollfest has died down to faux pleasantries.

My original on topic comment prior to the inquisition.

    – This is typical of the neoconservative bastardization of the gospel that Christ taught. Now you see why I climb onto my stump over it whenever someone tries to sell me war and killing as a tenet of Christianity.

    Its not.

It would be nice if one of these gun worshiping war mongering loons actually took the time to sit down one afternoon, and read the 4 Gospels.

    That’s all it takes.

    One Afternoon. They’re not long.

Its impossible to turn the gospels of Jesus into a mandate for war, but somehow these loons keep doing it.

was it not the same person? Did he change bodies?
He may be forgiven but he still did the deed.” – Pinandpuller

    “So dishonest is your answer?”

Are you subtly accusing me of being Byron?

I didn’t say what you attributed to me. Are you going to post a correction?

    Are you ignorant or dishonest?

  15. Byron:

Thanks for the concern. Just a little domestic crisis with one of the young’uns who decided to test his limits. We are in rehabilitation mode with him, and I’ve been a tad busy dealing with the School. He’ll survive, but he’ll do it car-less and phone-less for a few months. See what JT has to look forward to x 4.
