We often discuss the disconnect of religious fanatics who rape or beat or kill women and girls in the name of morality. Often such abuses seems to be condoned by governments like Iran. However, after a series of acid attacks on women for not being properly veiled, the Iranian government is actually investigating and denouncing the attacks.
The government’s sympathy only go so far. Under the Sharia-based law in Iran, women must wear the loose fitting hijab that covers their heads and necks.
The attacks have occurred in Isfahan and General Hossein Ashtari has confirmed at least four acid attacks. Others say that there are at least 13 women chemically burned for being “badly veiled.” Other attacks have occurred in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India where the women are accused of “sullying” their family “honour” by committing “indecent” behaviour.
While the government has insisted that it will investigate, others have insisted that it must also punish women who are not sufficiently covered. Various women have adopted thin veiled or more shapely clothing to the outrage of religious Iranians. Iranian MPs have written to President Hassan Rouhani to demand that police increase enforcement of wearing of the veil. Once again, these legislators have little faith in convincing people to follow their Islamic values. Instead, they want to coerce them to comply to their values and call it a moral act.

Till Death Do Us Part
More than 300 women have been shot, stabbed, strangled, beaten, bludgeoned or burned to death by men in South Carolina over the past decade, dying at a rate of one every 12 days while the state does little to stem the carnage from domestic abuse.

South Carolina: Where Men Murder Women and Legislators Don’t Care
8/20/14
http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2014/08/20/charleston_post_and_courier_series_on_domestic_homicide_in_south_carolina.html
Excerpt:
Tuesday evening, the Charleston Post and Courier released a massive seven-part series on South Carolina’s failure to take domestic violence seriously—a failure that has resulted in the state leading the nation in the murder rate of women at the hands of men (currently the best measure we have for domestic homicide). The series, titled “Till Death Do Us Part,” is the result of interviewing “more than 100 victims, counselors, police, prosecutors and judges” to create a multimedia story chronicling the failures of legislators, law enforcement, social services, and even churches to do enough to fight the problem of domestic violence. Journalists Doug Pardue, Glenn Smith, Jennifer Berry Hawes, and Natalie Caula Hauff unflinchingly place much of the blame on South Carolina culture: heavily conservative values about marriage and gender roles, as well as an enthusiasm for guns that makes it nearly impossible to get them out of the hands of men who want to kill women.
Docmadison, you have had another comment removed under our civility rule.

In New York and Massachusetts I have to agree that young women do not see the animal eyes glowing at them in the dark.
But down in Texas, we are not like those stupid Yankee broads. We pack heat! I carry my little 5 shot .38 in my purse wherever I go. 🙂

Thanks for the link. I had read that article too, but I don’t think it supports your claim
Clearly, she thinks men are uneducable and will always respond to stimuli without reason or control.
Not all men are rapists or unable to control themselves. She never said that. There are those who are……. but not all men.
I gleaned from the article, what I have always known, is that the world is full of danger. Dangerous people, dangerous places, dangerous activities and to think that you will be somehow sheltered in a magic bubble from those because of your gender is even more of a danger.
Misled by the naive optimism and “You go, girl!” boosterism of their upbringing, young women do not see the animal eyes glowing at them in the dark. They assume that bared flesh and sexy clothes are just a fashion statement containing no messages that might be misread and twisted by a psychotic. They do not understand the fragility of civilization and the constant nearness of savage nature.

Where’s the guy blowing his horn?
Amazing how some continue to assume things about other people, it just never ends, lol.
Paulette, Thanks. I read that piece when it came out. I read everything this intellectual giant writes. I read her seminal book, Sexual Personae, I doubt anyone else here has.
Squeeky, We and the substantive commenters are heavyweights, boxing welterweights. They hit below the belt and after the bell.

Squeeky, If only that were the context. I have said here many times I was a “house dick” @ the Drake Hotel in Chicago. And, as you know, I really don’t care if I’m called a “dick” in the context of a male organ. But, there are fairness sheriff’s here. If I called a woman a c@nt, there would be bedlam. Of course, I would not do that. It’s a word that my wife took out of my vocabulary before we married. It offends her. I love her and I love women. I have been successful in being married for 37 years. That makes some jealous.
Meantime back in the Taliban States, Tennessee will be voting on an amendment to their state constitution that will set up the passage of a law that will end ALL abortion.
I wonder if the Professor will post on that? Nah. There will probably be another outrage against women in the Middle East that needs covering.
Nothing to see here.
OLLY w/ a thread winner!!!
Well Squeeky, don’t be so hard on Sandra Fluke, we can’t all be an Orly Taitz.
