We often discuss the disconnect of religious fanatics who rape or beat or kill women and girls in the name of morality. Often such abuses seems to be condoned by governments like Iran. However, after a series of acid attacks on women for not being properly veiled, the Iranian government is actually investigating and denouncing the attacks.
The government’s sympathy only go so far. Under the Sharia-based law in Iran, women must wear the loose fitting hijab that covers their heads and necks.
The attacks have occurred in Isfahan and General Hossein Ashtari has confirmed at least four acid attacks. Others say that there are at least 13 women chemically burned for being “badly veiled.” Other attacks have occurred in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India where the women are accused of “sullying” their family “honour” by committing “indecent” behaviour.
While the government has insisted that it will investigate, others have insisted that it must also punish women who are not sufficiently covered. Various women have adopted thin veiled or more shapely clothing to the outrage of religious Iranians. Iranian MPs have written to President Hassan Rouhani to demand that police increase enforcement of wearing of the veil. Once again, these legislators have little faith in convincing people to follow their Islamic values. Instead, they want to coerce them to comply to their values and call it a moral act.

Annie – didn’t Joe Biden’s son just get kicked out of the Navy for drug abuse?
@Annie
Yes, Annie, you could go on and on. Because religion doesn’t do a perfect job, because it can’t, because people aren’t perfect. Sooo, you can keep on deluding yourself and others that you are a fount of wisdom by finding all the failures. But religion and teaching the values that you shouldn’t kill and steal is better than not teaching people they shouldn’t kill and steal. Like I have said before, liberals are all for education and moralizing, except when it comes to values, at which times the laws of physics supposedly break down.

I couldn’t get the newspaper link to load up properly. Maybe you can help. What is the race and socioeconomic breakdown of the murderers?

Black Earth WI pastor gets two years in child abuse case. I could go on and on. Hundreds of articles.
Religious values keeps violence in check? That old eye for eye thing generally causes more violence and does not lessen it whatsoever.

Squeeky,
I provided you with two links. The Post and Courier link will connect you to a seven-part investigative series that he paper published. Maybe you’ll find some “hard facts” there.
Elaine and SWM, I don’t know, Texas sounds sorta scary, especially for women and those “damn illegal immigrants”. Don’tcha know?
@maxcat06
There is a culture of violence in the whole frigging world. The things which help keep that violence in check, such as religious values, have been gutted by the more liberal class here, for exactly the reasons Paglia stated—those particular people are by and large sheltered from the bad stuff and are ignorant of it. IMO.

What hard facts did Birthers have? it was the stupidest conspiracy theory that some bloggers dedicated whole websites to for years.
swarthmoremom,
We northern gals don’t fear for our lives likes the gentle little ladies of the south. I have never felt the need to pack a little heat. Maybe the southern gun-totin’ gals should move to areas where they wouldn’t have to feel so fearful that their lives would be threatened on a daily basis.
Nowhere is ‘safe’ if you’re alive. Being born guarantees a 100% chance of death.
Why are we arguing equivalencies? Yes, the topic was Iran, but then if there’s mention of real violence against women here, that’s laughed off? C’mon, now we’re into debate as to which is worse, being killed with acid or being shot by a spouse? Squeeky, I lived in Texas, and as much as you’d like to make equivalencies WITHIN the U.S., this Yankee broad prefers, basically, “anywhere else”, and I lived there 25 years, due to a foolish career choice. I wrote this last night on another thread, and I’m writing it again; there is some real juvenile crap going on here by the need for posters to be right, rather than sane. Of course women are in danger here, 5 shot .38s aside. Is it Iran? No. Does that make it safe? Also, no. I guess the heavyweights and welterweights will continue belting it out, but there IS a culture of violence in this country as well. We just like to think it’s all “over there”.
Nothing improves a woman’s life more than family planning. This is most especially true in the Third World.

@ElaineM
Is it of no consequence to you that the article you linked us to consists almost entirely of subjective opinion, and precious little in the way of hard facts???

To combat human rights abuses worldwide, we should be dropping small arms rifle kits chambered in .22 LR. Pamphlet the drop zones, “Rights for women! Grab your life in your hands, and fight for your freedom!”. There would be massive change. How many women from the west would buy a one way ticket, or ride their motorcycles out to fight in solidarity with these brave front-line feminists?
“But down in Texas, we are not like those stupid Yankee broads. We pack heat! I carry my little 5 shot .38 in my purse wherever I go.” Yep, the crime rate is higher in Texas. The gun culture has made Texas one of the more dangerous states to live in.
