We often discuss the disconnect of religious fanatics who rape or beat or kill women and girls in the name of morality. Often such abuses seems to be condoned by governments like Iran. However, after a series of acid attacks on women for not being properly veiled, the Iranian government is actually investigating and denouncing the attacks.
The government’s sympathy only go so far. Under the Sharia-based law in Iran, women must wear the loose fitting hijab that covers their heads and necks.
The attacks have occurred in Isfahan and General Hossein Ashtari has confirmed at least four acid attacks. Others say that there are at least 13 women chemically burned for being “badly veiled.” Other attacks have occurred in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India where the women are accused of “sullying” their family “honour” by committing “indecent” behaviour.
While the government has insisted that it will investigate, others have insisted that it must also punish women who are not sufficiently covered. Various women have adopted thin veiled or more shapely clothing to the outrage of religious Iranians. Iranian MPs have written to President Hassan Rouhani to demand that police increase enforcement of wearing of the veil. Once again, these legislators have little faith in convincing people to follow their Islamic values. Instead, they want to coerce them to comply to their values and call it a moral act.

LMAO!
DBQ: See…..here is the difference. In some parts of the world both of those actions are perfectly ok with the values and cultures of the area. A man is allowed to do either. In OUR culture neither one of those things are allowed, approved of and you will be punished.
——————————————————————————-
Sorry, DBQ, I do not know of any part of the world where throwing acid in the face of women and/or killing them is acceptable culturally or part of their values. Wherever it exists rampantly is where the central government is ineffective in enforcing the laws.
That craps happens in Pakistan often but it is against the laws. Happens in Afghanistan, but against the laws. Happens in India and Nepal;, but against the laws, against the culture.
It is akin to saying that polygamy is an american value and a cultural more because Mormons practice it.
Again, to deem it an Islamic issue would lead us to believe that it doesn’t happen anywhere but in Islamic countries.Perhaps we should tell that to the thousand of women who were murdered in Tijuana.

Oh dear god.
Jill
I think the sexual oppression of women is a terrible thing. I think about 50% of Americans favor sexual oppression of women. I find it repugnant. They are the American Taliban. Worse really.
Sorry. I don’t think you misunderstand the ‘skin’ remark and only wish a launching pad for another polemic. Not interested.
Jill makes a good point above. Islam was an extremely liberal ideology at its inception. Most notable was the leaning for the care of women and orphans.
I’ll repeat, the crimes against women are just that. If people claim a religious duty for that, they are just trying to create some authority for their actions. The dark side of human nature is at fault here.
Elaine, Did you really mean to say that S. Carolina is where women get beaten as opposed to most northern states? That’s how I read your posts but perhaps I am reading them incorrectly?
I am personally unaware of any state that does not have violence against women, either in the North or the South. Are you?
There’s a problem with his hair too. That’s why he has to keep it so closely cropped, doncha know?
😉
doc, I”ll bite. How does Obama’s skin color not fit for the office of President?
Also, what do you think of the original story of this post. Do you think it was a good thing that the women had acid thrown on them?
Paul,
Well just think how wonderful it will be when Planned Parenthood is gone and we can back to the good old days when women used coat hangers.
But then we must always remember….the sluts deserved it.
docmadison – well, we could always sterlize them. I think Magaret Sanger was behind that for black women.
Paul
Along with his social security not ‘fitting’ – his skin color also does not fit for the office of President.
docmadison – just what the hell does the racist in chief’s skin color have to do with anything. This is a man who through his mother and grand-parents, who raised him, under the bus, to be black for the father who abandoned him. He has done more to set back race relations than any President we have every had.

It must be true if you read it in The Daily Mail
docmadison – Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the United States.
It is obvious. All of these dastardly men abusing women in South Carolina play in NFL. And they let their pit bulls off the leash.
Off with their heads!
(Just to tie together the past couple of day)
Annie,
Thanks for that picture! LOL!!!!!

@Jill
I love this— It is mostly post modernism b.s.,–the language of dunces who have Phd’s.” Don’t be surprised if I blatantly steal these words and tell everybody I said it! 🙂
@Elaine
I finished the whole 7 part series. What I took from it, is that the police need to do a better job of separating the wheat from the chaff when it comes to reporting the abuse, that the courts need to do a better job of reporting their activities to the NCIC type systems, and that women ought to have enough sense to get out of truly abusive situations.
I did not find anything upon which the screed against Christianity or gun ownership could be reasonably based, and the authors’ attempts to shoehorn that into the story is going to do nothing but insure many readers do not try to get to part 7. I did not find any racial or socioeconomic breakdown on perps and vics.
That being said, one of the problems with the whole domestic violence issue is the amount of bullpoop that gets reported as domestic violence. A lot of this stuff is nothing but pushing, shoving, or mutual slapping, and when you clog the system up with this kind of stuff, the really abusive stuff gets lost in the big pile of crap. The real reason why so many women don’t pursue the stuff in court, is because it was crap to begin with.
Now, if the judicial system goes to automatic 1 year sentences for all convicted perps, and and refuses to let women withdraw the charges, then you are going to have a whole new set of problems including filling up the prisons, and driving many families into poverty.
The best answer seems to be to do a better job at the policing level, and only pursue the real cases of real abuse. Plus, the authors need to perhaps spend their time writing to convince real victims of abuse how to get out, not trying to pursue some personal agenda against guns and Christianity.

Annie, Very regressive group….
The abuse of women does not know a religion, a class, a color or a region of the US. It is everywhere, in all religions, all classes, all regions of the US, all colors of people. This shouldn’t be an argument for which religion or state of the union is morally superior to another. This should be an attempt to acknowledge an unwelcome truth-violence against women is systemic and acceptable to many, many people.
Paul, First of all, do you have any research to back up what you wrote? Secondly, if women want to hate men maybe they have a reason, maybe they do not. As long as that hatred stays in the realm of speech, it’s the business of that woman. I also think it’s within the realm of free speech to say this hatred is wrong.
I have as little as possible to do with academic feminism, but for a different reason than you do. I stay away because I consider most of what is talked/written about in academia to be a betrayal of other women. It is mostly post modernism b.s.,–the language of dunces who have Phd’s.
At one time academic feminists spoke in plain language, understandable to any person, about everyday issues that profoundly effect women’s lives. This isn’t the case right now (for the most part).
However, there are still some academic feminists who concern themselves with actual women’s lives. For example, in Toledo we have the 4th highest rate in the nation of adults taking young girls and forcing them into prostitution. A professor at the University here has been instrumental in pulling together detectives and police to arrest the pimps and their minions who sell these young girls into sexual slavery. She has pulled together social workers, nuns, tea party Republicans and Greens (to name a few) into a coalition to stop this horrific abuse of children.
Now if you go to the University of Michigan you will be unlikely to encounter anyone like this professor. This is a rich university and basically, the feminist dept. is a jobs program for wealthy men and women. (Even there that is not a wholly accurate description,) My respect for such people is 0.0.
As to sexual harassment, this is a huge problem for women in many, many workplaces. I have no doubt that some people make crap up to get at others, but the vast majority of cases of harassment are well documented. Often little to nothing is done to stop this abuse.
SWM, seems lke the ones with NO kids are coming out strong against family planning.
Annie – if you can call killing babies family planning then yes, I am against family planning.
