“I Am Charlie”: Charlie Hebdo Releases 3 Million Copies Of Magazine With Mohammed Cartoon On Cover

707192-une-charlie-png.jpgThe first issue by Charlie Hebdo will hit the streets today with a cover featuring a cartoon of Mohammed in defiance of Muslim extremists. The magazine will be offered “in 16 languages” for readers around the world and many are lining up to buy it to show solidarity with the magazine and free speech values after the massacre of 12 innocent people at the magazine.

The printing of 3 million is presumably a record for the magazine which often printed 60,000 copies a week, selling 30,000.

On the cover, Muhammad is shown with a tear streaming down his cheek, and holding a sign: “Je Suis Charlie” — “I Am Charlie.” Overhead is the phrase “Tout est pardonne”, or “All is forgiven.” The cover was drawn by cartoonist Rénald Luzier, known professionally as “Luz”.

The mass printing could trigger more worldwide protests in a confrontation between Muslim fundamentalists and free speech advocates.

  2. Here is a business idea. Manufacture foam snowmen in the shape of the big pedophile, turban, etc. Then when millions of Americans place them on their lawns, even in Arizona, we can blame all the turmoil, attacks, maybe deaths on Obama.

    And are we then Soft On Communism now? If we are then lets give Obama hell for it. And the Koch Brothers.

    But the Soft On Terrorism theme is what the days rant on Obama is all about (for not going to Paris and holding hands with Hollande and Merkel). So, if he has some allies now for sending troops on the ground to Yemen, then the Soft On Terrorism thing will push him over the edge. We have allies now. We are not going it alone to Make The World Safe For Democracy. Ok, that was 96 years ago and it was a Democrat who said that statement. And, we have made the world safe for Democracy. Well, sort of. It has been a 100 years since 1914 and the first World War began. Big lapse in there before WWII. But after that its been war every year and on every continent. Except here in N. America, unless you count 9/11.

    This war is coming. We will have boots on the ground in Yemen, Iran, Syria before long. Some Frogs will be marching along with us. Obama can then go to the Arc de Triumph. Or Romney or Jeb, if it takes that long. I wonder what stock we could get now cheap before the war starts, one that will ramp up when the bombing and boots are on the ground. Who makes boots?

  11. Some people only like free speech in theory. Try criticizing any aspect of Christianity and we then see all the little righty terrorists.

  12. In people who have PTSD, desensitization can reduce the effect of various triggers of recurrent symptoms.

    As a result, it would be considered quite therapeutic to publish multiple cartoons of Mohammad, every day, over and over again, in order to train Muslims not to be owned by their triggers.

    The science is clear.

  14. DBQ – the minute we’re told we have to de facto amend the First Amendment to prohibit harmless cartoons of Mohammed, we should immediately plaster the world with harmless cartoons. It would be desensitizing and it would take a stand.

    We don’t give up free speech for anyone or anything.

    The alternative is to keep making concessions – no images, no paintings, no matter how artistic, of Mohammed, then no criticizing Islam, no calling terrorists “Muslim” even if they write a treatise beforehand on how they are murdering people because of their faith, etc. Just project the trend out a few years, a few decades, and see where it will go unless we turn the ship now, when it’s still relatively easy.

  15. Groty – your reminiscence reminded me of my outrage at one particular aspect of the live coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. All the news media kept referring to “bodies” falling out of the sky. I was crying, saying out loud that those weren’t “bodies.” That implies they were already dead, and what happened next didn’t matter. Those were live, conscious people who jumped to their death because they didn’t want to burn to death or choke on the smoke anymore. “Bodies” did not properly encapsulate the horror that was done to them by Muslim terrorists. And 8 kids died aboard those planes, terrified.

    If the world, including moderate Muslims, stands in solidarity and fights back against violent extremism, it will be beaten back under a rock.

    I just read an article in the paper last week how Boko Haram has been using some of those captured girls as unwilling suicide bombers. One girl was actually given to Boko Haram by her father, and was arrested when she refused to detonate her suicide vest.

  18. I think the cover is poignant. There were Muslims at the rally holding a sign that said “We are Jews.” I loved it. Solidarity can be a beautiful thing.

  19. Now it very well might be true that President Obama does not want to go to ground war in Yemen and the other pirate territories. So, the guys on the inside of the military and the CIA decide to push the media and the message by trumping up the terrorists. Oh, they could not be individually paid to commit suicide. But CIA operatives could push the buttons so to speak and ramp some of them into these acts.
    The right wing Republicans have always used the “soft on communism” routine. Since the communists are not the enemy now (we are pals with Red China) the ruse is that the Democrats are soft on terrorists. And now its: Obama is not joining hands with Merkel and Hollande in Paris. It is obvious to Fox News that he is soft on terrorism. Well, some of us have bought into that. As seen on this blog. Now his party and confidants will be pushing him into war in Yemen and points east. We will not be going alone. We will have France! on our side. That is France with an exclamation point on the end. As in Vive Le France!

    I actually want some of these posters from Charlie Hedghog. Where can I get a full size one? The Prophet is a pedophile is far as I am concerned. Rumor has it that he also used to pork dogs. But, I don’t want to start rumors.
