“I Am Charlie”: Charlie Hebdo Releases 3 Million Copies Of Magazine With Mohammed Cartoon On Cover

707192-une-charlie-png.jpgThe first issue by Charlie Hebdo will hit the streets today with a cover featuring a cartoon of Mohammed in defiance of Muslim extremists. The magazine will be offered “in 16 languages” for readers around the world and many are lining up to buy it to show solidarity with the magazine and free speech values after the massacre of 12 innocent people at the magazine.

The printing of 3 million is presumably a record for the magazine which often printed 60,000 copies a week, selling 30,000.

On the cover, Muhammad is shown with a tear streaming down his cheek, and holding a sign: “Je Suis Charlie” — “I Am Charlie.” Overhead is the phrase “Tout est pardonne”, or “All is forgiven.” The cover was drawn by cartoonist Rénald Luzier, known professionally as “Luz”.

The mass printing could trigger more worldwide protests in a confrontation between Muslim fundamentalists and free speech advocates.

  1. I prayed for those at the Bundy ranch who ran away in fear of drones. It must’ve been terribly traumatizing.

  2. I’m agnostic, so just in case there is a God, I say a quick prayer. Just covering my bases.

  3. Isaac, is the “surgery” you speak of drone strikes? Lots of folks here on both sides of the spectrum are very much against that, but it does put the fear of God into them, doesn’t it?

I am serious when I agree that the US and France should send in some special forces to Yemen, Nigeria, Iraq, Syria, and anywhere these thugs are stationed, gestating, or performing their thuggery.

Regardless of political affiliations, this is war in the 21st Century. We saw the bungling when politicians organized Afghanistan and Iraq. If you listen to the colonels and generals who took part in Afghanistan and Iraq they all say that the ‘shock and awe’ stuff that the three stooges promised would suffice is not enough. It needs to be a combination of the best of the tech and the best boots on the ground.

There are enough willing, capable, and courageous men and women in the West to form the necessary brigades to perform the necessary surgery. If you want an example google Kolwezi and read how it’s done. The Foreign Legion has been performing surgery in Africa for decades. Most of it is small and the French government doesn’t like to advertise due to political issues. “The operation was an illustration of the efficiency and effectiveness of light infantry when used with the element of surprise and with good intelligence and logistics.” This was in 1978. Imagine what could be accomplished today. Five French Legionaries died against over 400 rebels or thugs. Snipers controlled the thugs by picking them off from 300 meters away. They herded the thugs into killing fields and decimated them. The Belgians evacuated the hostages. Belgians aren’t much good for anything other than loading busses. Listen to Le Boudin. It used to be that the Belgians were the only nationality not allowed in the Foreign Legion.

In any event, small smacks here and there won’t do it. The West, primarily the French and the US should be honing their military skills on these thugs. We know where the cancer is. First some judicious surgery, then go back in early while it’s metastasizing and cut it out when and where necessary. I’m sure the governments of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq, or where ever will scream and yell about the reckless and irresponsible incursions into their sovereign territories but behind closed doors they will be praising allah. There’s lots of virgins to go around in heaven.

  5. Remember, negative attention is ALL some are capable of achieving. For them, it’s like a pat on the back for us regular folk. I just keep praying for lost souls.

  6. I have a feeling that the itShay will hit the fan within a week. Our President was meeting with his military to plan the invasion of Yemen and the one in Iraq and a hard place. When you are between a rock and a hard place you do not have time to fly across the Atlantic and hold hands with Hollande at the rally. So the issue is where we will invade first and if perhaps the Frogs will take on Yemen and we will take on ISIS in Iraq and Syria and other. Or joint allied troops in all places. Without European allies I do not think that we will invade with ground troops. I think the Frogs are on board. What do you bloggers think? Ground war this week or in a month or not at all? Frogs and the U.S. side by side like at Normandy Beach? It is time to yak about the imminent war. The Frog posters are doing their part of the job.

  7. And I support free speech regardless of the message. The best remedy for bad speech is more speech.

Professor Turley has written about this at great length. It’s an awesome blog. Check it out.

  8. Chip – haha! You’re a terrorist because you used free speech to disagree with someone!

This could easily segue into the substandard public education system.

  9. Inga:

“Some people only like free speech in theory. Try criticizing any aspect of Christianity and we then see all the little righty terrorists.”

Riiiiiiiiight, because when the Catholic pedophile priest scandal unfolded, there were all these beheadings, suicide bombings, and such from all the little righty terrorists in response.

I don’t think “terrorist” means what you think it means.

Sure, people complain when they don’t like something. That’s called “free speech.” Muslims are free to complain, protest, and hold rallies all they like, just like everyone else. Lots of Muslims actually enjoy free speech, and other freedoms in America.

  10. issac: I like the idea. Maybe have the Prophet Pedophile Mohammed holding onto a goat’s private parts. We could start a new society called Goats R Us.
Foam snowmen for peace!. But the foam snowmen should be Made In USA.

  11. See? Free speech is reality is much more difficult than in theory. I thought perhaps some here would at least pretend to not be hypocrites. Sigh.
