The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released new data on global warming that, again, the data supports the over-whelming view of scientists that climate change is a dire reality. The world has experienced record-breaking hot weather every month in 2015 and the year is all but guaranteed to be the hottest on record.
According to NOAA, August was the warmest August ever recorded — with records going back to 1880. It was 1.58F above the 20th century average. Indeed, every month this year has been the hottest on record.
On its blog, NOAA stated “We estimate a 97% probability that 2015 will become the warmest year on record.”
The issue of global warming came up during the last Republican presidential debate.

Regarding the govt. subsidizing business. That is corporate welfare. But, the duopoly loves corporate welfare. As you know, an overwhelming majority of climate scientists are convinced about the potentially serious adverse effects of human-induced climate change on human health, agriculture, and biodiversity. We applaud your efforts to regulate emissions and the other steps you are taking. Nonetheless, as climate scientists we are exceedingly concerned that America’s response to climate change – indeed, the world’s response to climate change – is insufficient. The risks posed by climate change, including increasing extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and increasing ocean acidity – and potential strategies for addressing them – are detailed in the Third National Climate Assessment (2014), Climate Change Impacts in the United States. The stability of the Earth’s climate over the past ten thousand years contributed to the growth of agriculture and therefore, a thriving human civilization. We are now at high risk of seriously destabilizing the Earth’s climate and irreparably harming people around the world, especially the world’s poorest people.
We appreciate that you are making aggressive and imaginative use of the limited tools available to you in the face of a recalcitrant Congress. One additional tool – recently proposed by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse – is a RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) investigation of corporations and other organizations that have knowingly deceived the American people about the risks of climate change, as a means to forestall America’s response to climate change. The actions of these organizations have been extensively documented in peerreviewed academic research (Brulle, 2013) and in recent books including: Doubt is their Product (Michaels, 2008), Climate Cover-Up (Hoggan & Littlemore, 2009), Merchants of Doubt (Oreskes & Conway, 2010), The Climate War (Pooley, 2010), and in The Climate Deception Dossiers (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2015). We strongly endorse Senator Whitehouse’s call for a RICO investigation.
The methods of these organizations are quite similar to those used earlier by the tobacco industry. A RICO investigation (1999 to 2006) played an important role in stopping the tobacco industry from continuing to deceive the American people about the dangers of smoking. If corporations in the fossil fuel industry and their supporters are guilty of the misdeeds that have been documented in books and journal articles, it is imperative that these misdeeds be stopped as soon as possible so that America and the world can get on with the critically important business of finding effective ways to restabilize the Earth’s climate, before even more lasting damage is done.

Inga – increase temperature causes violent crime (physical assaults) when the temperature reaches a specific range. Once it is over that range the temperature is no longer an issue. Actually it can be too hot to commit a violent crime or too cold.

Actually……we are emerging still from the last Little Ice Age which began approximately in the 1300’s and ended approximately 1815. Prior to this little ice age we had the Medieval Warming period from about 950 ad to 1250 ad. So…….within the lifetimes of some of our most recent ancestors there was an ice age and a warming period.
Here is a good documentary about the little ice age and the medieval warming period. During the warming period life was good, people had crops, grapes grew in England, building boomed. During the ice age…..the reverse. Starvation, plagues, the dark ages in other words.
Warmer is better 😀 In addition the warming and cold were not world wide. It never is world wide so cherry picking the data is another example of false science There are ALWAYS areas where it is warmer or cooler than the average overall temperatures.
IN addition. When we get these breathless claims of temperatures being warmer than any in recorded history, we need to realizes that “recorded history” is not a very long time. We didn’t measure temperatures until recently and those earliest recordings are not necessarily very accurate. Neither are some of our current recordings when they are taken in heat sinks, near asphalt reflecting heat and other discrepancies.

Carbon DIOXIDE, which we breath out with every single breath is not a pollutant. It is not carbon in the air. Carbon dioxide is a very small component in the atmosphere. Water vapor is more prevalent and a likely cause of atmospheric warm conditions Carbon Dioxide is necessary for plants to grow and they produce more oxygen which WE need to breathe in. Plants thrive in higher carbon dioxide atmospheres. We eat plants and we eat the animals that eat the plants.

According to analysis by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, sea surface temperatures during August were near or greater than 2°C (3.6°F) above the 1981–2010 average in the eastern half of the equatorial Pacific Ocean. There is a greater than 90 percent chance that El Niño will continue through Northern Hemisphere winter 2015/16.”
By definition, an El Nino year will be above average temperature and rainfall. Here in So Cal, we’ve had a very mild summer, with below average days greater than 100 degrees, but we’ve had those coveted El Nino summer thunderstorms. With this drought, I am praying for more rain.
On the one hand, if we keep pumping carbon into the atmosphere, eventually we will create a gaseous profile that is not optimal for mammalian life. So, obviously, there is a limit to our emissions.
On the other hand, the climate has always changed since Earth first gathered a gaseous envelope. We cannot “freeze” the climate, pun intended, at today’s values, nor should we. Polar Bears evolved in response to climate change. The cooling of the Earth was a catastrophe at the time, and they adapted to become hyper specialized to that cold environment. But the Ice Age is long over, and the Earth will continue to change. That hyper specialization for essentially a single food source, seal, which can only be hunted with good ice pack, now makes it very difficult for them to adapt again. Such climate change has been one of the main drivers for the evolution of new species, as well as their extinctions.
It is critical that humanity maintain its ability to adapt to a changing world, because change is constant. There is only one outcome for species who cannot adapt.
I can go to the coast and see the water line high up on the cliffs above me from ancient seas, when the polar caps had melted. Who believes this will never happen again? I have a fossilized shark tooth I found far inland from those ancient seas.
Even our land mass is continuing to change, with fault lines incrementally rearranging the land.
What has long frustrated me is the hyperfixation on anthropogenic climate change, at the expense of other current and pressing dangers. We do no have the money or interest left to address the de-vegetation of our planet, even though such flora cleans our air, removes carbon, banks moisture, affects local climate, and manufactures oxygen. Phytoplankton produce most of our oxygen, and yet we have polluted the entire ocean. But when was the last time we heard about de-vegetation and water pollution? China and Russia belch toxic clouds and their rivers and streams are considered by our standards to be toxic waste, but all we focus on is carbon. We are partially to blame for the raw sewage coming out of China, because we’ve shifted most of the world’s manufacturing to China. They just do our dirty work for us. All those neat new phones and computers we get every couple of years have toxic components, that we ship to India for little kids to pick through for scavenging income. And quite a few toxins are involved in the creation of solar panels in someone else’s backyard.
Nick is right; we have lost our focus on interconnected ecosystems and conservation of resources. Here is an interesting video on how the reintroduction of an apex predator, the wolf, changed an entire ecosystem through trophic cascades.
If climate change was due to Saddam Hussein, ISIS or the Taliban then the current climate change science deniers (vast majority are right wing types) would be fighting it with every tool and dollar imaginable. They would accept spying on all Americans who drive SUVs, heat homes of 1500 sq ft or more at temps of 72 F+, or use incandescent bulbs, The GOP would be touting science, embracing the data, criticizing those who don’t believe. They would be screaming ‘You’re either with us or against us!” They would be brought to action! There would be no stone unturned, no battle to large or no death toll to high, and no limit to the spending if only climate change was due to Muslims….
Maybe the corrupt, ignorant, clueless scientists at NOAA, NASA, and the IPCC, and the unAmerican, economy destroying, climate science supporter groups such as American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, American Geophysical Union, American Medical Association and the American Meteorological Society to name a few could just equate climate science to Muslims then there would be a groundswell of action from the right wing…..

Steg – the numbers don’t add up. If humans only contribute 0.47 Gigatons of CO2 to the total CO2 in the atmosphere as claimed, then how has the atmospheric CO2 increased by 33%, or so, over the last 100 years? Based on the 3200 Gigatons of CO2 in the atmosphere, assuming this is today’s total, stated in the article, the initial CO2 would have had to have been about 2400 Gigatons. This is a difference of 800 Gigatons, of which only about 30 to 35 tons of that are human induced according to the article. Where did the rest of it come from? This doesn’t even count the CO2 that has been absorbed by the oceans which are being acidified to the point that all of the ocean’s corral reefs will probably be gone in less that 100 years.
