Indonesian Woman Caned for Having “Affectionate Contact”

45px-Rattan_caneWe have another example of the grotesque Sharia legal system this week. A 20-year-old Indonesian woman was hospitalized after being publicly caned for violating Sharia law in having affectionate contact with a man who was not her husband. The chilling scene was magnified by cheering crowds who watched as students Nur Elita and Wahyudi Saputra were caned outside a mosque in Banda Aceh.

Banda Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that operates under Sharia law.

Elita received five strokes along with Saputra, 23, and had to be carried to an ambulance as Banda Aceh Deputy Mayor Zainal Arifin proclaimed “Take these punishments as a lesson. What has been done by these convicts should not be taken as an example.”

Four men were caned for gambling on the same day.

The disturbing scene is available here

  1. I will throw my territorial observations and jurisprudence into the fray. I am often citing the canon: East of Corfu The Ten Commandments Don’t Apply. Another way to say it is that once you are traveling East from Greece with or without rhyme, you hit Turkey and that is where “territory” not civilized nation state begins, it goes downhill as one goes East and Southeast. There are the Stan territories, some of which were part of the Soviet Union, and the likes of Pakistan and Afghanistan. When you have Stan you have Muslim. India is more civilized than all the rest but again it divided up after Britain left into India and Pakistan and most of the Muslims from that olid colony are in Pakistan. Smart separation at that time. When you get to Indonesia you have a mix but mostly a majority of Muslims. The best territory out that way is Thailand and it has very few Muslims. Bhuddism is the best religion followed by Hindu, then perhaps a few Christians who think that their itShay does not stink. But all religions think their itShay doesn’t stink. The places where the humans are mean and cruel to dogs are also the places where they are most intolerant of other ethnics or religions. If you are blind do not even think about taking your guide dog to Indonesia. He will get stolen and eaten for lunch. All from here, Howard Demere. (where does that last phrase arise from?)

  2. So why exactly are we importing Muslims who believe in Sharia here?

The US doesn’t have magic dirt that suddenly transforms barbarians from despotic lands into Thomas Jefferson.

No, they will vote for Sharia once they arrive, and will succeed in doing so, especially now that Obama has subverted the rule of law so completely.

  3. I guess I’m confused by the headline on this one. Why isn’t it. “6 Indonesians Caned for for breaking Sharia law”? Why s the one female held higher than the rest?

  4. issac, Oh, your so right. Trump is responsible for the idiotic BLM ‘cheering’. So if we are ‘Trump fodder’, does that make you ‘Clinton crap’?

  5. Don de Drain

You don’t have to look far to see the seeds of where the ‘cheering’ comes from. Right here on this blog there are those that are well along the road of the ‘mob’, known these days as ‘Trump fodder’.

  6. Banda Aceh bans New Year’s Eve celebrations

The Banda Aceh city administration prohibited its residents from celebrating the changing of the year as such celebrations are not considered to be in accordance with the prevailing Islamic Law.

The ban, he said, also applied to preaching or dzikr activities conducted on the eve of the New Year, not just to mass gatherings, fireworks and firecrackers, trumpet blowing, partying and barbecues.

Meanwhile, the Agam regency administration in West Sumatra has planned to close all tourist attractions in the region that are frequently used as venues for New Year’s Eve celebrations
and to raid hotels and homestays on the eve of the New Year.

  7. There are two separate problems here. The first problem is that a government is imposing punishment, severe corporal punishment, that is not in any way justified by the conduct of the person being punished. Whether done in the name of government sanctioned sharia law, in the name of rulers like Pol Pot or Pinochet, or in the name of the USA (think of the “torture photos” that Obama is trying to prevent from being published), this conduct should be condemned. Always. And loudly. Just don’t pretend that this conduct only occurs in countries that adopt sharia law as the basis for their legal system.

The second problem is the cheering of the crowd as they watch the punishment. This type of blood lust by crowds likewise has occurred and continues to occur in countries that do not use sharia law. We see variations of this behavior from time to time in the USA. This behavior deserves loud criticism as well.

Those who demonize “others,” whether those “others” are Muslims, Christians, atheists, Democrats, Republicans, liberals, conservatives, libertarians, undocumented workers/illegal aliens, etc. etc., make it easier for crowds to engage in this type of blood lust. If each of us says “stop demonizing” whenever we encounter demonizing behavior, we encourage a society where this type of blood lust is less likely to happen.

Don’t ask for lessons from Ted Cruz or Alan Grayson on how to disagree with or criticize someone respectfully without demonizing them.

But it is something for us all to think about as we head towards the start of a new year.

  8. Is some tyrant making up the rules for these ppl and making them comply? Or is it their community standard? I mean bouncing around a fire with a mask stoned on nutmeg is culture nat geo celebrates. If local crowds looking on were celebrating we need to ask why? Was it akin to north korea fake wailing or sincere. And if sincere why do we care? Suptr presumably was the male eli…the female. And men were whipped for gambling. So its not like women are the only convicts. Wheras florida swats bingo parties and forfiets the property. Certainly those ppl would rather four slashes than their life savings. Do they have an abortion epidemic there? Just curious? A dead beat dad epidemic? Just curious.

  9. Most impressive to see that Professor Turley makes room in his day to read and cite The Daily Mail. No doubt he reviews legal precedents from episodes of Judge Judy.

Certainly reinforces my respect for our justice system and those entrusted with educating our future legal advocates.

  10. This is what happens on Rayani, Malaysia’s Islamic airline, when you try to stuff an excessively large carry on into the overhead bin.

Don’t ask what happens when you ask for an extra bag of pretzels. It’s not pretty.

  11. Imagine. Indonesia is hailed as the home of moderate Muslims. By all means, open the floodgates to more of these barbarians. Come on, the more the merrier. Let’s open our borders to more of these primitive throwbacks. I guess that the crowd was invited to an all-you-can-eat buffet at the adjacent mosque after the festivities. Nothing like a little caning and public torture to get the juices flowing. Bring the kids! Hey, I hear it’s Hummas Wednesday at the buffet! Tell Ahmed to quit hogging the shwarma!

  12. It’s good this didn’t happen in Chicago, otherwise they would have been shot dead.

  13. Cane was able. But were they caned with a rod or canned into a metal soup can. “Canned” was the word used up there in the article.
This is why God made rifles. Someone needs to shoot these Imams. Not their moms.
