Yankee Doodling the Media: How ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ Became a Rallying Cry Against News Bias

Below is my column in The Hill on the growing “Let’s Go, Brandon” movement, which is a unique response to what many people view as a bias media. It is the modern equivalent of the adoption of “Yankee Doodle Dandy” by colonists in using what was a contemptuous expression as a rallying cry of defiance.

Here is the column:

Roughly 250 years ago, a political insult by British troops during the American Revolution was converted into a rallying cry by the colonials. “Yankee Doodle Dandy” was intended to mock the Continental Army as unsophisticated dandies, but the maligned militiamen turned it around to mock the British after defeats like Yorktown. The song is a lasting example of how symbols of contempt can become symbols of defiance.

In a curious way, “Let’s Go Brandon!” has become a similarly unintended political battle cry. It derives from an Oct. 2 interview with race-car driver Brandon Brown after he won his first NASCAR Xfinity Series race. During the interview, NBC reporter Kelli Stavast’s questions were drowned out by loud-and-clear chants of “F*** Joe Biden.” Stavast quickly and inexplicably declared, “You can hear the chants from the crowd, ‘Let’s go, Brandon!’”

Stavast’s denial or misinterpretation of the obvious instantly became a symbol of what many Americans perceive as media bias in favor of the Biden administration. Indeed, some in the media immediately praised Stavast for her “smooth save” and being a “quick-thinking reporter.” But the episode was reminiscent of a reporter standing in front of burning buildings during last year’s riots and calling them peaceful protests. Indeed, even the original profane chant seemed directed as much at the media as Biden — creating an undeniable backdrop to news coverage.

The three-word slogan is now emblazoned across tee-shirts, coffee mugs and even billboards. An anti-Biden “Let’s go, Brandon!” hip-hop song hit the top of the charts on iTunes; soon, there were four such songs with the same refrain. The top song was banned on sites like YouTube and Instagram as spreading “harmful false information.” Yet the effort to bar people from listening to the song only fueled the interest and the movement.

The media’s reaction has fulfilled the underlying narrative, too, with commentators growing increasing shrill in denouncing its use. NPR denounced the chant as “vulgar,” while writers at the Washington Post and other newspapers condemned it as offensive; CNN’s John Avalon called it “not patriotic,” while CNN political analyst Joe Lockhart compared it to coded rhetoric from Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan and ISIS.

The more the media has cried foul, however, the more people have picked up the chant.

Then a Southwest Airlines pilot reportedly used the expression at the end of a signoff with passengers on a flight from Houston to Albuquerque. Associated Press reporter Colleen Long apparently was so irate that she demanded access to the cockpit and was almost expelled from the flight. She admits that “I was asking them to open locked cock pit and probably sounded insane!” Washington Post editor Cathleen Decker described the use of the slogan as a “vulgarity stand-in from @SouthwestAir cockpit.” Liberals called for an investigation and the firing of the pilot. CNN analyst Asha Rangappa even compared the pilot to an ISIS sympathizer: “As an experiment, I’d love for an @SouthwestAir pilot to say ‘Long live ISIS.’”

But what if the pilot had simply knelt in protest of the Biden administration as passengers boarded or deplaned?

Well, many of these same commentators have supported the NFL’s kneelers and insisted that any effort to prevent their protest was racist or a denial of free speech.

As I wrote previously, employees do not have a right to protest on the job, whether in Starbucks or in sports stadiums. Nevertheless, when then-President Trump condemned the NFL kneelers as unpatriotic, some Democrats in Congress called for his impeachment. When the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg also criticized the kneelers, journalist Katie Couric edited out most of her comments.

The fact is that neither the Southwest pilot nor Colin Kaepernick have a legal right to protest at work. I also believe it is inappropriate for a pilot to use his position — and the captive audience on his plane — to proselytize or politic.

“Let’s go, Brandon!” is as much a criticism of the media as it is of President Biden, however. Many in the media have embraced advocacy journalism and rejected objectivity in reporting; in their view, readers and viewers are now to be educated rather than merely informed. Many reporters reject “both-sidesism,” the need to offer a balanced account of the news. Thus, stories like the Hunter Biden laptop scandal were killed before the 2020 presidential election by Twitter and most media companies. After Biden was elected, some media belatedly confirmed the authenticity of the laptop.

We live in an age of unprecedented censorship by private companies. The media has shown that you can have an effective state media without direct regulation by the state — because today’s media adheres to common narratives out of ideological or economic interests, without the threat of state coercion.

The Biden administration and the National Science Foundation are funding research on a new tool designed to give media an even more immediate response to “misinformation.” The $750,000 grant to Temple University tracks news reports as part of a “Trust & Authenticity in Communication Systems” initiative. But the effort to “rebuild the Nation’s news trust” is premised on flagging content that might result in “negative unintended outcomes” like “the triggering of uncivil, polarizing discourse, audience misinterpretation, the production of misinformation, and the perpetuation of false narratives.” Such algorithms promise even greater consistency in messaging and framing of the news.

In other words, “Brandon” is going to get even more popular, because such efforts are not really working.

Censorship and media bias have never really changed minds or shaped lasting public opinion. You cannot get the public to hear “F*** Joe Biden!” but think “Let’s go, Brandon!” Biden’s popularity has tanked despite an openly protective and enabling media, with 71 percent of the public believing the country is going in the wrong direction, according to one poll. The reason is that the media is now singing from the same choir book, while most Americans have tuned it out.

That brings us back to “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and the perils of mockery. Many Americans interpreted the false race-day account as an act of open contempt for viewers who were expected to simply believe what they were told was happening, despite seeing and hearing something else. Instead, they have now used that phrase as a rallying cry for defiance. It’s their way of telling both the president and the media to “mind the music and the step” because they are marching to a different tune.

      You will suffer. And you will bow.

      Wreck the economy. Fabricate deflections. Manufacture scapegoats. All the branding of tyranny.

  12. Professor Turley doesn’t indicate how he reacted when NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, apologized for the way the league initially handled player’s pre-game protests.

    Goodell: “We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest. We, the National Football League, believe black lives matter. I personally protest with you and want to be part of the much-needed change in this country. And the protests around the country are emblematic of the centuries of silence, inequality and oppression of black players, coaches, fans and staff.”

    JT is clearly right that Trump believes NFL players who peacefully protest during sporting events are unpatriotic & should be condemned. But Trump supporters at sporting events should be applauded for loudly voicing profane chants about our duly elected President, right?

  13. No, Turley, “Let’s Go Brandon” has nothing to do with protesting mainstream media. It has to do with the disciples of the former guy who won’t shut up or go away, and who keeps stirring up the disciples to keep him in the news. He won’t concede or support the winning candidate, so neither will they, and this is unprecedented in American history. Trump is the first POTUS who refused to concede or congratulate his successor, and the first in recent history to refuse to attend his successor’s inauguration or welcome the successor and his family to the White House for the traditional post-inauguration luncheon. He had to be threatened with forcible removal before he would leave. He keeps on lying about his “landslide victory” being stolen from him, keeps holding rallies, keeps trying to pretend that he is in power, and, most of all, does everything possible to undermine the success of the candidate who beat him. This, too, is unprecedented and un-American. Fox and other alt-right media not only ignore this outrageous conduct, but they promote the “Let’s Go Brandon” crowd, as if there is merit in encouraging Americans to refuse to accept the valid results of an election held almost a year ago. They keep stirring the pot, encouraging division and resistance to moving forward for the agenda of the winning candidate. That is un-American, and also unprecedented.

    Mainstream media aren’t biased in favor of Trump, either. Trump is a draft-dodging crook, fraud, loser, liar, and womanizer whose incompetence and lying killed 130,000 Americans. He belongs in prison. The biased media are Fox, OAN, News Max, Breitbart and other pro-Trump/Republican media who lie all of the time about anything they think will help Republicans win elections. They constantly claim that CRT is being taught to school children, which is absolutely not true. But, it worked in Virginia, so they will keep on lying. Turley is now part of the effort to validate the “Let’s Go Brandon”, mischaracterizing it as an anti-mainstream media “movement”. Bowel movement would be more like it. Just a bunch of dumbasses who keep falling for the lies of a failed political candidate.

He confirmed that Trump’s campaign did feed insider polling information gathered by the campaign to Russians who used it to spread lies about Hillary Clinton in districts where such lies would be effective, and it swung the Electoral College votes for him, which it was calculated to do. Trump fired Coats for telling the truth, just like he fired Chris Krebs, head of Cybersecurity, for telling the truth that the election was the most-secure in US History. Read the Mueller Report, based on solid evidence. No matter how many times Hannity lies about it, Trump cheated to get into office in 2016. He tried to cheat to stay in office and continues to refuse to accept the will of the American people.

          CNN did an excellent documentary on Trump and his disinformation campaign about rigged elections, which began even before the 2016 election. When Cruz beat him in the Iowa primary, Trump claimed that it was “rigged”. The CNN documentary consisted almost exclusively of interviews with Republicans plus a few reporters who interviewed people. Of course, you won’t believe the facts that are presented about how Trump accuses anyone and everyone who beats him of cheating, because you are disciple and have been conditioned to disbelieve anything you hear that isn’t from Fox, OAN, News Max or other alt-right media.

But Fiona’s friends Igor and Christopher did more than that. Igor got the “intelligence” for the “dossier” from a Hillary Clinton P.R. maven.

    A recent poll by Interactive Polls, who accurately call the VA governor election, has Biden at 37% approval rating.
    He is really losing with Independents with an approval of only 26%, disapproval of 62%.

    Also of note, The Hill ran a poll prior to the 2020 election showing Independents would vote for a 3rd party, a sizeable chuck of Dems (more than half, IIRC it was in the 60%) and only a small minority of GOP would vote 3rd party.

      There’s still plenty of time for the mainstream media to go into overdrive stumping for the Democrat Party. We can already see the nearly verbatim news coverage that claims that CRT is not taught in schools, an easily debunked lie.

      We’ll have to see if we can really shake the Democrat hegemony.

      As for independents, I think there are two types. There’s the Independent who always votes Democrat, but refuses to be labeled. Then there is the true swing vote Independent, who doesn’t care for either label, and does not reliably vote for one party above all others. Of the latter, they can lean Left or Right. The Left Independent may vote Peace and Freedom, Democrat Socialist, Democrat, or Green Party. The more right leaning Independent tends to vote Republican, Libertarian, or with a right leaning Independent candidate or proposal.

      A lot is riding on the Independents and Moderate Democrats to correct this crazy course the country seems to be in.

      I used to think of myself as Independent, and would vote either way, although mostly on the right spectrum, but when the Democrats went to such extremes, I never voted Democrat again. Now I vote Republican or Libertarian.

  20. “Let’s Go Brandon” is the equivalent of dumping tea in the harbor. It’s a revolution of the tyranny of the hard Left, and many moderate Democrats are heeding the rallying cry.

    Democrats – Are you an AOC Democrat who thinks we can just print more money, or a Manchin moderate who actually cares how much things cost? As your party goes farther and farther left, teaching your kids they should be treated differently depending on their race, if you keep voting D, you’re going along with it.

    The Red Army persecuting Sinema and Manchin show the totalitarian, unthinking, mob behavior of the Left. Fighting it should be bipartisan.

Trump is the very definition of tyranny–a wannbe dictator just like Hitler, and, just like Hitler, everything he stands for is a lie, from Mexico building the wall, to a better health plan at lower cost than Obamacare, that 15 COVID cases will soon be zero, that he had the biggest inauguration crowd in history, best economic numbers of all, and that his “landslide victory” was stolen from him.

      It’s obvious that you don’t even understand the basics of what the Boston Tea Party was about, which was taxation without representation. There is no “hard Left”, either, a fantasy you keep trying to promote every day, but fail. Manchin is garnering as much air time as possible, basking in the attention. MANCHIN DOES KNOW THAT THE OMB WILL PROVIDE THE COSTS FOR THE BILL, BUT HE PRETENDS HE DOESN’T. Hannity won’t tell you this, but every bill that goes through reconciliation is evaluated and scored by the OMB, and Manchin knows this, too. But, all you Trumpsters know is that he is slowing down Biden’s agenda, so you pretend that what he is doing is reasonable. The Democrat Party is NOT going “farther and farther left”, and is not promoting CRT or teaching children that they should be treated differently because of their race. That is just another of the daily lies served up by Fox to keep the disciples stirred up.

      In Virginia, the lying Republicans managed to scare parents into believing that CRT was being taught in schools, and leveraged that lie into shoving one of theirs into the governor’s mansion. That is a big, fat lie, but that’s all Republicans are capable of doing to get and keep power–scare the hell out of people by lying. I saw a program the other day that had 2 Virginia parents–one who firmly believed the lie about CRT being taught in schools, and the other, a mother who was also a teacher, who brought to the interview social studies and history books used in Virginia classrooms. Guess what? No CRT was being taught. Children were NOT being taught that whites have historically been aggressors and took advantage of or enslaved people of color and that they should be ashamed of past things done by whites, or any of the other daily lies put out by Carlson, Hannity and other alt-right media. THEY SPREAD THIS LIE BECAUSE IT IS WORKING. BUT, IT IS STILL A LIE.

      As for “Lets Go Brandon”, more pandering to dopes like you, Karen, who believe the Big Lie, who believe the scare tactics used out by Fox. OAN, News Max, and who fantasize that they are part of some patriotic movement that is pushing back against an evil “Left”, which Turley’s piece is designed to promote. At the end of the day, you are just followers of a bloated narcissistic liar and failed political candidate who just won’t shut up or go away, and because he lost the election, is stirring up the faithful to oppose the candidate who beat him. Biden will continue his calm, empathetic leadership, pulling America back from the health and economic disasters caused by Trump by building back better. It will take time, but the turnaround of the unemployment numbers is the best in 50 years’ time. Biden’s infrastructure plan will calm down inflation. Dozens of Nobel Laureates who won the prize for economics voluntarily put together a letter of support they sent to Biden that said his agenda is on the right track. Hannity won’t tell you that, either. You and your ilk can keep putting up the “F Biden” signs and shout all of the “Let’s go Brandon” cheers you want, but America is moving on from Trump and Biden will succeed with or without your help and support.
