

I have been critical of the wholesale removal of statues and memorials recently for figures ranging from
Roger Taney to
George Washington. Now however I am equally concerned about a statue that will be erected. The D.C. city council has voted to erect a statue prominently in front of its building to . . . Marion Barry. That’s right, that Marion Barry. Barry went to jail for six months after being videotaped smoking
crack cocaine and was arrested by
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials. He has a host of scandals and, for many of us, represented the worst in American politics. Yet, the D.C. committee voted unanimously that it is Barry that they want to honor before any of the proud and worthy figures in D.C. history. It is not clear if Barry’s most famous quote from his arrest will be featured on the statue: “Bitch set me up,”
